Replace or reprogram the Transmission Control Module (TCM) on a 2015 Kia Forte 1.8L with automatic transmission, including connector removal and module replacement.
Warnings
⚠The TCM contains critical programming specific to your vehicle's VIN and transmission. Ensure proper programming equipment is available before beginning this repair.
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require window auto-up/down relearning.
ℹ️TCM replacement requires programming and adaptation using Kia GDS or equivalent diagnostic tool. The module will not function properly without programming.
⚠Handle the TCM by its edges only. Static electricity can damage internal components.

Parts
- Transmission Control Module (TCM) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- TCM cover screws (if damaged) × 4 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Open hood and support with prop rod
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for capacitor discharge
- Ensure engine is cool to touch
Procedure
- 1Access the TCM locationThe TCM is located on top of the automatic transmission, accessible from the engine bay. Remove the engine cover by pulling upward on the front clips, then rearward. The TCM is mounted on the driver's side of the transmission bell housing, near the battery tray.
- 2Remove air intake components if neededFor better access, loosen the clamp on the air intake tube at the throttle body and remove the air intake duct. Set aside carefully to avoid damaging the mass airflow sensor.
- 3Disconnect TCM electrical connectorsLocate the two large electrical connectors on the TCM. Press the locking tab on each connector and carefully pull straight away from the module. Do not twist or rock the connectors excessively. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage.
- 4Remove TCM mounting hardwareRemove the four mounting screws securing the TCM cover and bracket to the transmission housing using a 10mm socket. Keep track of screw locations as they may be different lengths. Carefully lift the TCM away from the transmission case.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 5Inspect and clean mounting surfaceInspect the transmission mounting surface for debris, fluid contamination, or damage. Clean the area with a lint-free cloth. Check the connector seals on the transmission for any fluid leakage or damage.
- 6Install new TCMPosition the new TCM onto the transmission mounting surface, ensuring proper alignment with the connector ports. Install the mounting screws finger-tight first, then torque in a crisscross pattern to specification.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 7Reconnect electrical connectorsApply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the connector seals if desired. Align each connector carefully and press firmly until you hear and feel a positive click. Verify the locking tabs are fully engaged on both connectors.
- 8Reinstall air intake componentsReinstall the air intake duct, ensuring proper seating at the throttle body and air box. Tighten the clamp securely but do not overtighten.
- 9Reconnect battery and perform TCM programmingReconnect the negative battery cable. Connect the Kia GDS diagnostic tool to the OBD-II port. Follow the manufacturer's procedure to program the TCM with the vehicle VIN, transmission type, and perform all required adaptations. This typically includes idle learning, shift point learning, and clutch adaptation procedures.⚠️Do not attempt to start or drive the vehicle until TCM programming is complete. Doing so may cause transmission damage or unpredictable shifting behavior.
- 10Perform TCM initializationWith programming complete, turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine. Cycle through all shift positions (P-R-N-D-L) and return to Park. This allows the TCM to recognize shift position sensor inputs. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that may have set during installation.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine cover by aligning rear tabs first, then pressing down on front clips until seated
- Perform window auto-up/down relearn if needed: hold window switch up for 2 seconds after full close, then down for 2 seconds after full open
- Reset radio presets and clock as needed
Verification
- Verify no diagnostic trouble codes are present using scan tool
- Start engine and verify it shifts into gear smoothly from Park to Drive and Reverse
- Perform a test drive including acceleration, deceleration, and all gear ranges to confirm proper shift points and quality
- Check for proper transmission fluid level on level ground with engine at operating temperature
- Verify cruise control, speedometer, and shift lock functions operate correctly
- Confirm no warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster
