Warnings
⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL SYSTEM: The third brake light is a required safety device. Failure to properly install and verify operation can result in rear-end collisions causing injury or death. If any step is unclear, seek professional service immediately.
⚠Verify brake light operation before returning vehicle to service. Inoperative brake lights create serious collision risk.
⚠Work with ignition OFF to prevent electrical shorts. Do not force plastic trim components as they can break easily.
ℹ️This procedure is for sedan models. Coupe and hatchback versions have different third brake light locations and procedures.
Tools required
Phillips head screwdriver or trim toolEssential
Flat blade trim removal tool
Clean cloth or gloves
Parts
- Third brake light assembly (center high-mounted stop lamp) × 1 — 92401-A7000 or equivalent OEM
- Replacement bulb (if only bulb replacement needed) × 1 — W16W or W21/5W wedge bulb - verify assembly type
Preparation
- Ensure ignition is OFF and key is removed from vehicle
- Determine if entire assembly requires replacement or only the bulb
- Park vehicle in well-lit area or provide adequate lighting to see rear package shelf area
- Open trunk to access third brake light from interior side
Procedure
- 1Access the third brake light assemblyFrom inside the trunk, locate the third brake light housing on the rear package shelf directly below the rear window. The assembly is accessible from the trunk side of the package shelf trim panel.
- 2Remove trim clips or fastenersLocate the plastic retaining clips or fasteners securing the third brake light assembly. On most 2015 Forte models, there are two phillips screws or push-pin style clips. Carefully remove these fasteners using a phillips screwdriver or trim tool. Keep fasteners in a safe location for reinstallation.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorGently pull the third brake light assembly away from the mounting location enough to access the electrical connector on the back. Press the release tab on the connector and pull straight apart to disconnect. Do not pull on wires. Note the connector orientation for reinstallation.⚠Do not pull on wires themselves - press release tab and separate connector bodies only. Pulling wires can damage the harness.
- 4Remove the third brake light assemblyWith electrical connector disconnected, fully remove the third brake light assembly from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting area for any debris, damage, or corrosion that should be cleaned before installing the replacement.
- 5Replace bulb or prepare new assemblyIf replacing only the bulb: twist the bulb socket counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull straight out. Remove the old wedge-style bulb by pulling straight out (not twisted). Insert new bulb ensuring it seats fully. If replacing entire assembly: proceed with new complete unit. Verify the new assembly gasket or seal is in good condition to prevent water intrusion.
- 6Install new or repaired assemblyConnect the electrical connector to the new or repaired third brake light assembly, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Position the assembly into the mounting location, aligning the mounting holes with the package shelf openings. Ensure any rubber gasket or seal is properly positioned to prevent water leaks.
- 7Secure the assemblyInstall the retaining fasteners (phillips screws or push clips) and tighten by hand until snug. Do not overtighten plastic fasteners as this can crack the housing or trim. Ensure the assembly sits flush and even against the package shelf with no gaps.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connections are secure and properly seated
- Ensure no tools or parts are left in trunk area
- Check that third brake light housing is properly sealed to prevent water intrusion into trunk
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to run)
- Have an assistant press the brake pedal while you observe the third brake light from outside the vehicle - it must illuminate brightly
- Verify the third brake light illuminates at the same time as the main brake lights
- Check that the light turns off when brake pedal is released
- Inspect for proper fitment with no gaps, rattles, or misalignment
- Test brake lights multiple times to ensure consistent operation before driving
- If light does not operate: recheck electrical connection, verify bulb is properly seated, and check vehicle fuse if problem persists
