This procedure replaces the trunk latch actuator (electric latch release mechanism) on a 2015 Kia Forte sedan.
Warnings
⚠️This repair involves the vehicle's anti-theft and locking system. Failure to properly connect or secure components may result in trunk opening while driving, causing loss of cargo or creating road hazards.
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require clock reset. Some vehicles may require power window reinitialization after battery reconnection.
⚠Do not force trunk open manually if actuator has failed in locked position. Improper force may damage secondary latch or striker plate.

Parts
- Trunk latch actuator assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification (81230-A7000 or equivalent)
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
- Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent electrical short during actuator replacement
- Open trunk fully and prop open if needed
- Verify you have the correct replacement actuator before beginning disassembly
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalUsing a 10mm wrench, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the cable from the battery post and secure it away from the terminal to prevent accidental reconnection during the repair.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove trunk interior trim panelFrom inside the trunk, locate the interior trim panel covering the trunk latch area (centered on the trunk lid near the latch). Using panel removal tools, carefully pry out the retaining clips securing the trim panel. There are typically 4-6 plastic push clips. Remove the trim panel to expose the trunk latch actuator assembly.⚠Plastic clips are fragile. Apply gentle, even pressure when removing to avoid breaking clips. Have replacement clips available if needed.
- 3Disconnect actuator electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the trunk latch actuator. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the actuator. Ensure no tension is placed on the wiring harness.ℹ️The connector may be stiff if this is the first time it has been disconnected. Do not pull on wires; always pull on the connector body itself.
- 4Remove actuator mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the mounting bolts securing the trunk latch actuator to the trunk lid structure. There are typically 3 mounting bolts. Support the actuator assembly with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 5Remove trunk latch actuator assemblyCarefully withdraw the trunk latch actuator from the trunk lid. Note the orientation and position of the actuator for proper installation of the replacement unit. Inspect the striker plate on the body for wear or damage; replace if necessary.ℹ️If actuator is stuck due to seized latch mechanism, do not force removal. Apply penetrating oil and allow to soak, or consult a professional to avoid damaging trunk structure.
- 6Install new trunk latch actuatorPosition the new trunk latch actuator in the same orientation as the original. Insert the assembly into the mounting location, ensuring it aligns properly with the striker plate when the trunk is closed. Start all three mounting bolts by hand before tightening.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Torque actuator mounting boltsUsing a torque wrench, tighten the actuator mounting bolts to 26.0 Nm (19 lb-ft) in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the actuator assembly. Verify the actuator is firmly seated against the mounting surface with no gaps.⚠️Proper torque is critical for safe operation. Under-torqued bolts may allow actuator to shift during operation, potentially causing trunk to unlatch while driving.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the new trunk latch actuator until you hear or feel a positive click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 9Reinstall trunk interior trim panelPosition the interior trim panel back into place. Press firmly on each clip location until all clips are fully seated and the panel is flush with the surrounding trunk interior surface.ℹ️Ensure no wiring is pinched behind the trim panel before fully seating the clips.
- 10Reconnect battery negative terminalReconnect the negative battery cable to the battery post. Tighten the terminal bolt to 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this may damage the battery terminal or bolt threads.⚠Overtightening battery terminal bolts can crack the battery case or strip terminal threads. Use a torque wrench for proper tightening.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reassembly is covered in the installation steps above
- Ensure all electrical connections are secure and no wiring is pinched or damaged
- Verify all trim panels are properly seated with clips fully engaged
Verification
- Test trunk release from inside the vehicle using the trunk release button to verify actuator operates correctly
- Test trunk release using the key fob remote button to confirm proper electrical operation
- Verify trunk latches securely when closed and requires normal effort to open
- Check that trunk warning light on instrument cluster behaves correctly (illuminates when trunk is open, off when closed)
- Manually verify trunk latch engages striker plate completely when closed and does not rattle or feel loose
- Close trunk firmly and attempt to open it from outside with key to verify all functions work properly
- Reset clock and radio presets as needed after battery disconnection
