This procedure covers the replacement of the turn signal switch (also known as the combination switch or multifunction switch) on the steering column of a 2015 Kia Forte with 1.8L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠️Always disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 3 minutes before working near the steering column to allow the airbag system capacitors to discharge.
⚠Do not rotate the clockspring connector if the steering wheel is removed. This can damage the clockspring and cause airbag malfunction.
⚠Handle all electrical connectors carefully to avoid bending pins or damaging locking tabs.

Parts
- Turn signal/combination switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Ensure steering wheel is centered and front wheels are pointed straight ahead
- Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning work
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverLocate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the retaining screws (typically 2-3 screws) and carefully pull the lower cover downward and away from the column. Set aside in a safe location.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 2Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower cover removed, locate the upper steering column cover screws. Remove these screws and separate the upper cover from the steering column. You may need to tilt or maneuver the cover around the steering wheel to remove it completely.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 3Locate and access the turn signal switchWith both covers removed, the turn signal switch assembly will be visible on the left side of the steering column (driver's perspective). Identify the electrical connectors attached to the rear of the switch assembly.ℹ️Take a photo of connector positions and wire routing before disconnection for reassembly reference.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the electrical connector(s) at the rear of the turn signal switch. Press the locking tab(s) and carefully pull the connector(s) straight away from the switch. There may be 1-2 connectors depending on vehicle options (with or without cruise control). Label connectors if necessary for proper reinstallation.⚠Do not pull on wires; always grasp the connector body when disconnecting.
- 5Remove switch mounting screwsLocate the switch mounting screws securing the turn signal switch assembly to the steering column bracket (typically 2-3 screws). Remove these screws completely using a Phillips screwdriver. Keep screws in a container to prevent loss.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 6Remove turn signal switch assemblyWith the mounting screws removed and connectors disconnected, carefully slide the turn signal switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may need to be angled or maneuvered slightly to clear the column and any surrounding components. Remove the old switch completely from the vehicle.ℹ️Inspect the steering column for any damage or wear while the switch is removed.
- 7Install new turn signal switchPosition the new turn signal switch assembly onto the steering column in the same orientation as the original. Align the mounting screw holes with the threaded inserts in the column bracket. Ensure the switch is fully seated against the mounting surface before installing screws.⚠Verify the switch lever is in the neutral (off) position before installation.
- 8Install and torque switch mounting screwsInsert all switch mounting screws and hand-tighten them first. Once all screws are started, use a torque wrench to tighten the screws to the specified torque in a cross-pattern if multiple screws are present. Ensure the switch is secure and does not move.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect the electrical connector(s) to the new turn signal switch. Align the connector(s) carefully and push firmly until you hear or feel the locking tab(s) click into place. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.⚠Ensure connectors are fully locked to prevent intermittent electrical issues or loss of function.
- 10Test switch operation before reassemblyBefore reinstalling the steering column covers, reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine off) and test all turn signal switch functions including left/right turn signals, high beam/low beam headlight switch, and hazard lights. Verify all functions operate correctly.ℹ️Testing before reassembly allows easy access if adjustments or corrections are needed.
- 11Reinstall upper steering column coverIf all functions test correctly, turn ignition OFF and position the upper steering column cover back onto the column. Align the cover properly and install the retaining screws. Torque screws to specification to avoid cracking the plastic cover.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall lower steering column coverPosition the lower steering column cover and align it with the upper cover and mounting points. Install the retaining screws and torque to specification. Ensure all cover edges are properly seated and aligned with no gaps.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all steering column covers are properly aligned and secured with no gaps or misalignment
- Verify no tools or parts were left in the steering column area
- Route all wiring back to original positions to avoid interference with steering column movement
- Confirm battery is reconnected with terminals clean and tight
Verification
- With ignition ON (engine off), verify turn signal indicators flash properly on instrument cluster when left or right signal is activated
- Test high beam and low beam headlight switch operation
- Verify hazard light function works correctly with all four turn signals flashing
- If equipped, test wiper switch and cruise control functions on the combination switch
- Turn steering wheel full lock left and right to ensure no interference between switch lever and column covers
- Test drive vehicle to confirm all turn signal and lighting functions operate normally under real-world conditions
- Verify no warning lights appear on instrument cluster related to lighting or switch functions
