This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the windshield wiper/washer switch assembly on the 2015 Kia Forte 1.8L I4, which is integrated into the steering column multi-function switch.

Warnings

Disconnect the battery negative terminal and wait 3 minutes before working near airbag components to prevent accidental deployment.
ℹ️The wiper switch is part of the multi-function switch assembly. The entire assembly must be replaced as a unit.
Do not force steering column covers or switches during removal as plastic tabs break easily.

Parts

  • Wiper/washer multi-function switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Electrical connector grease (dielectric) × 1 — Optional but recommended

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
  4. Ensure steering wheel is in straight-ahead position
  5. Gather all tools and new wiper switch assembly

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery
Loosen and remove the battery negative terminal bolt. Move the cable away from the battery post and secure it so it cannot make contact during the repair.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Wait for airbag system discharge
Wait a minimum of 3 minutes after disconnecting the battery to allow the airbag system capacitors to fully discharge. This is critical for safety when working near the steering column.
⚠️Working on the steering column before waiting 3 minutes may result in airbag deployment and serious injury.
  3. 3
    Remove lower steering column cover
Locate the Phillips screws securing the lower steering column cover (typically 2-3 screws on the underside). Remove the screws and carefully pull the lower cover downward and away from the column. Set aside with screws.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove upper steering column cover
With the lower cover removed, locate the upper cover retaining screws (typically 2 screws at the top). Remove screws and gently lift the upper cover upward and off the steering column. Watch for any remaining clips or tabs.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Locate wiper switch assembly
Identify the multi-function switch assembly on the right side of the steering column (wiper/washer controls). Locate the electrical connector at the base of the switch assembly and note the mounting screw locations.
ℹ️Take a photo of the connector orientation and routing before disconnection for reassembly reference.
  6. 6
    Disconnect wiper switch electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight off the switch assembly. Do not pull on the wires. If difficult to remove, gently wiggle while pulling to avoid damage to connector pins.
Never pull on wires to disconnect connectors as this can damage the wiring harness.
  7. 7
    Remove switch mounting screws
Remove the mounting screws securing the wiper switch assembly to the steering column bracket (typically 1-2 screws). Keep track of screw locations as they may be different lengths.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Remove wiper switch assembly
Carefully slide the wiper switch assembly straight back and off the steering column shaft. Some resistance is normal due to the internal slider mechanism. Do not twist or force the switch.
Forcing or twisting the switch can damage the steering column shaft or clockspring assembly.
  9. 9
    Inspect and prepare new switch
Inspect the steering column shaft contact area for debris or damage. Clean if necessary. Unpack the new wiper switch assembly and verify it matches the original. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector if desired.
ℹ️Ensure the new switch is in the OFF position before installation to align internal components properly.
  10. 10
    Install new wiper switch
Slide the new wiper switch assembly onto the steering column shaft, aligning the internal slider with the column mechanism. Push firmly until the switch is fully seated against the mounting bracket. Ensure proper alignment before tightening screws.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the new switch assembly until the locking tab clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector body (not wires).
  12. 12
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover over the column and align mounting holes. Install and tighten screws to specification. Then position the lower cover and install its screws, ensuring all clips and tabs engage properly.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the battery negative terminal cable to the battery post. Tighten the terminal bolt to specification. Ensure the connection is secure and the cable cannot rotate or come loose.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all steering column covers are properly seated with no gaps before final tightening
  2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully locked and secured
  3. Check that no tools or parts were left in the steering column area

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine) and verify no warning lights remain illuminated on the dash
  • Test all wiper switch positions: OFF, INT (intermittent), LOW, HIGH - verify wipers operate correctly in each position
  • Test washer function by pulling the wiper switch lever toward you - verify washer fluid sprays and wipers activate
  • Test intermittent wiper delay adjustment if equipped - verify delay timing changes with switch position
  • Verify wiper switch returns to correct positions and has proper detent feel in all positions
  • Confirm steering column covers are secure with no rattles when gently shaking the steering wheel
  • Start vehicle and retest all wiper/washer functions under normal operating conditions
