Remove and replace the airbag control module (ACM) located under the center console, including proper disarming procedures and system reprogramming requirements.
Warnings
⚠️Airbag system stores explosive energy. Improper handling can cause airbag deployment resulting in serious injury or death. Wait minimum 2 minutes after battery disconnect before proceeding.
⚠️New airbag module MUST be programmed to vehicle VIN using factory scan tool. Failure to program will result in non-functional airbag system and potential injury in a collision.
⚠️Never probe or test airbag connectors with power connected. This can deploy airbags or damage the module.
⚠Disconnecting airbag module will set fault codes and illuminate airbag warning light. Professional scan tool required to clear codes and verify system operation.
⚠Keep new module in anti-static packaging until installation. Static discharge can damage internal components.
ℹ️This procedure requires airbag system reprogramming. If you do not have access to factory-level diagnostic equipment, this job should be performed by a qualified professional.

Parts
- Airbag Control Module (ACM) × 1 — Use OEM specification - must be programmed to VIN
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Disconnect negative battery terminal first, then positive terminal
- Wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to fully discharge before proceeding
- Ensure seat is moved fully rearward for access to center console
- Verify replacement module part number matches original and is compatible with vehicle VIN
Procedure
- 1Remove center console trim panelsRemove the front floor console bezel by gently prying upward starting at the rear edge. Disconnect any electrical connectors for power outlets or switches. Remove the cupholder insert by lifting straight up. Remove the gear shifter trim ring by pulling upward carefully.
- 2Access console mounting fastenersLocate and remove the console mounting screws. There are typically 4-6 screws located under the trim pieces just removed. Some screws may be hidden under rubber mats or in cupholder area. Remove all fasteners completely.Torque specCover Screws15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 3Remove center console assemblyCarefully lift the rear portion of the console upward. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors for lights, power outlets, or other accessories. Slide console rearward and upward to remove from vehicle. Set aside in safe location to avoid damage.⚠Console may have sharp edges or hidden clips. Use care when removing to avoid injury or breaking clips.
- 4Locate airbag control moduleThe ACM is mounted on the transmission tunnel, typically near the center of the vehicle under where the console was located. It is a rectangular metal box with a large yellow connector. Identify the module and verify it is the correct component before removal.
- 5Disconnect ACM electrical connectorLocate the yellow airbag connector (may have orange or yellow locking tab). Press the locking tab and carefully pull connector straight out from module. Do not twist or bend connector. Inspect connector pins for damage or corrosion.⚠️Ensure battery has been disconnected for at least 2 minutes before touching any airbag connectors. Never connect or disconnect with power applied.
- 6Remove ACM ground connectionLocate the ground strap attached to the module mounting bracket or nearby body point. Remove the ground strap bolt using appropriate socket. Clean ground connection point with wire brush to ensure bright metal contact for reinstallation.⚠Clean ground connections are critical for proper ACM operation. Ensure contact surfaces are free of paint, rust, and corrosion.Torque specGround Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 7Remove ACM mounting boltsRemove the module mounting bolts securing the ACM to the bracket or transmission tunnel. There are typically 2-4 bolts. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation. Carefully remove module from mounting location.ℹ️Handle old module carefully even though it is being replaced. Store in safe location away from work area.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 8Inspect mounting area and connectorsThoroughly inspect the mounting bracket for damage or corrosion. Check wiring harness and connector for signs of damage, corrosion, or water intrusion. Clean mounting surface and ground points with wire brush. Verify connector pins are straight and clean.
- 9Install new ACMRemove new module from anti-static packaging only when ready to install. Position new ACM on mounting bracket in same orientation as original. Install mounting bolts and torque to specification. Ensure module is seated fully against mounting surface.⚠Do not touch connector pins or circuit board components. Handle module by housing only.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect ground connectionInstall ground strap to cleaned ground connection point. Ensure metal-to-metal contact with no paint or corrosion between surfaces. Torque ground strap bolt to specification. Verify connection is secure.Torque specGround Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 11Connect ACM electrical connectorCarefully align yellow airbag connector with module. Push connector straight onto module until locking tab clicks into place. Verify connector is fully seated and locked. Gently pull on connector to confirm it is secure.
- 12Reinstall center consolePosition console back into vehicle, routing any wiring through appropriate openings. Reconnect all electrical connectors for power outlets, lights, and switches. Install console mounting screws and torque to specification. Reinstall trim panels, cupholder, and shifter trim ring.Torque specCover Screws15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 13Reconnect batteryReconnect positive battery terminal first, then negative terminal. Torque battery terminal bolts to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage terminals.⚠Battery terminal bolts require only 6 Nm (4 lb-ft). Overtightening will strip threads or crack terminal.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 14Program and verify ACMConnect factory-level diagnostic scan tool. Program new ACM with vehicle VIN and configuration data. This step is mandatory and cannot be skipped. Clear all airbag fault codes. Perform system self-test according to scan tool prompts. Verify all airbag system components communicate properly.⚠️Module programming is mandatory for proper airbag system operation. Unprogrammed module will not deploy airbags in a collision.
Reassembly
- Verify all console trim panels are properly clipped and secured
- Ensure all electrical connectors under console are reconnected
- Confirm no tools or parts are left in vehicle interior
- Test all console functions (power outlets, lights, shifter operation)
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine - airbag warning light should illuminate for 6-8 seconds then turn OFF
- If airbag light stays on, flashes, or does not illuminate, system has fault and requires further diagnosis
- Use scan tool to verify no active airbag fault codes are present
- Verify all airbag components show 'Active' or 'Present' status in scan tool
- Test drive vehicle and confirm airbag warning light remains OFF
- Document module serial number and programming date for vehicle records
- Recommend professional verification if any concerns about system operation exist
