Replace the center link and drag link on a 2014 Ram 2500 4WD with 6.7L Cummins diesel engine to restore proper steering linkage integrity and eliminate play or damage in the steering system.
Warnings
⚠️Vehicle must be properly supported on jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
⚠Steering linkage is under load. Use proper ball joint separation tools to avoid injury from sudden separation.
⚠Components may be heavily corroded. Apply penetrating oil 30 minutes before starting work.
ℹ️Alignment check is strongly recommended after replacing steering linkage components.

Parts
- Center link assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Drag link assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Cotter pins (assorted) × 6 — 1/8 inch diameter
- Anti-seize compound × 1 — High temperature rated
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
- Chock rear wheels securely
- Spray all castle nuts and tapered studs with penetrating oil and allow to soak
- Raise front of vehicle using floor jack at front axle
- Support vehicle on jack stands rated for vehicle weight placed under frame rails
- Remove both front wheels
- Turn steering wheel to center position and lock ignition
Procedure
- 1Remove cotter pins and castle nuts from center linkLocate the center link connecting the pitman arm to the steering knuckles. Using pliers, straighten and remove all cotter pins from the castle nuts at both tie rod ends and the pitman arm connection. Remove the castle nuts using a 1-1/8 inch socket. Note the orientation and number of threads exposed for reference during installation.
- 2Separate center link from tie rods and pitman armUsing a pickle fork or ball joint separator tool, separate the center link ball studs from the tie rod ends and pitman arm. Insert the pickle fork between the center link and the mating component, then strike firmly with a hammer. Work around all connection points. If using a tie rod puller, position it according to manufacturer instructions and tighten to force separation. Support the center link as it separates to prevent dropping.⚠Ball joints will separate suddenly. Keep hands and body clear of pinch points.
- 3Remove center link assemblyOnce all connections are separated, carefully lower and remove the center link assembly from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting tapers on the tie rods and pitman arm for damage or excessive wear. Clean all tapered mounting surfaces with a wire brush if reusing components.
- 4Remove drag link from pitman arm and steering knuckleLocate the drag link running from the pitman arm to the passenger side steering knuckle. Remove the cotter pins from both castle nuts. Remove the castle nuts using appropriate socket. Use the pickle fork or ball joint separator to disconnect the drag link from both the pitman arm and steering knuckle connections. Support the drag link during separation and remove from vehicle.
- 5Inspect mounting points and clean threadsThoroughly inspect all ball stud tapers on the pitman arm, tie rods, and steering knuckles for wear, scoring, or damage. Check threads on all studs for damage. Clean all tapered seats and threads with a wire brush. Inspect dust boots on remaining components for tears or damage. Replace any components showing excessive wear.
- 6Install new drag linkPosition the new drag link with the ball stud ends aligned to the pitman arm and passenger side steering knuckle. Install the ball studs into their tapered seats, ensuring they seat fully. Apply anti-seize to the threads of the castle nuts. Thread castle nuts onto the ball studs by hand, then tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Align castle nut slots with the stud holes and install new cotter pins, bending the ends to secure.ℹ️If castle nut slots do not align with cotter pin holes at specified torque, tighten further to next alignment point. Never loosen to align.Torque specCastle Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 7Install new center linkPosition the new center link assembly and align ball studs with the pitman arm connection and both tie rod ends. Ensure proper orientation matches original configuration. Insert ball studs into tapered seats and verify full engagement. Apply anti-seize to castle nut threads. Install castle nuts hand-tight, then torque to specification. Align castle nut slots with stud holes and install new cotter pins on all connections.Torque specCastle Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 8Verify all connections and steering movementInspect all ball stud connections to ensure proper seating and that castle nuts are fully torqued with new cotter pins properly installed and bent. Manually rotate the steering knuckles to verify free movement without binding. Check that all components clear suspension and frame members through full range of motion. Verify no interference exists.
- 9Reinstall wheels and lower vehicleReinstall both front wheels, threading lug nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading. Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern to specification using a torque wrench. Carefully raise vehicle slightly with floor jack and remove jack stands. Lower vehicle completely to ground. Perform final lug nut torque check with vehicle weight on wheels.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts183 Nm (135 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- All castle nuts must be secured with new cotter pins - never reuse old cotter pins
- Verify all cotter pins are properly bent to prevent backing out
- Check that steering wheel is centered when wheels are pointed straight ahead
- Test steering for smooth operation through full lock-to-lock movement before driving
Verification
- Start engine and turn steering wheel full lock left and right - verify no binding or unusual noises
- With engine running, have assistant turn steering wheel while you inspect all new linkage connections for movement or play
- Perform visual inspection of all castle nuts and cotter pins to confirm proper installation
- Test drive vehicle at low speed in safe area to verify proper steering response and no vibration
- Schedule professional alignment check within 50 miles - steering geometry has been altered
- Re-torque wheel lug nuts after 50-100 miles of driving
