Remove and replace the EVAP charcoal canister, which captures fuel vapors from the fuel system to prevent emissions.
Warnings
⚠Fuel vapors may be present in the EVAP system. Work in a well-ventilated area away from open flames or sparks.
⚠Do not smoke or create ignition sources while working on the EVAP system.
ℹ️This repair should be performed with less than half a tank of fuel to minimize vapor pressure.

Parts
- Charcoal canister (EVAP canister) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Vapor line O-rings × 4 — Use OEM specification
- Mounting grommet set × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
- Ensure fuel tank is less than half full to reduce vapor pressure
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes
- Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle on jack stands
- Remove driver side rear wheel for improved access
Procedure
- 1Access the charcoal canister locationThe charcoal canister is located on the driver side frame rail, forward of the rear axle. Remove the plastic splash shield or underbody panel if equipped by removing the fasteners. This provides clear access to the canister and vapor lines.
- 2Identify and label vapor linesIdentify the four vapor lines connected to the canister: purge line (to engine), vent line (to atmosphere), tank vapor line (from fuel tank), and leak detection pump line. Use masking tape or tags to label each line connection to ensure correct reassembly.
- 3Release vapor line at purge connectionPress the quick-connect release tabs on the purge vapor line fitting at the top of the canister. Pull the line straight away from the canister. Expect a slight release of fuel vapor odor. Inspect the O-ring on the line end and plan to replace it.
- 4Disconnect remaining vapor linesUsing the same quick-connect release technique, disconnect the vent line, fuel tank vapor line, and leak detection pump line from the canister. Some lines may have threaded fittings that require a wrench. Plug open lines with clean shop towels to prevent debris entry.Torque specFuel Line Fittings25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 5Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector for the canister vent solenoid valve on the side of the canister assembly. Press the red release tab and pull the connector straight off. Secure the connector away from the work area.
- 6Remove canister mounting boltsRemove the two mounting bolts securing the canister bracket to the frame rail. Support the canister with one hand while removing the final bolt. The canister assembly weighs approximately 3-4 pounds.Torque specMounting Bolts37 Nm (27 lb-ft)
- 7Remove canister assemblyLower the canister assembly from the mounting bracket. Check the condition of the mounting grommets on the bracket and replace if cracked or deteriorated. Inspect the old canister for external damage, cracks, or signs of fuel saturation.
- 8Prepare new canisterRemove the new charcoal canister from packaging. Verify all ports match the original configuration. Install new mounting grommets if included with the replacement canister. Do not remove protective caps from vapor line ports until ready to connect.
- 9Install new canister to bracketPosition the new canister into the mounting bracket on the frame rail. Align the mounting holes and start both mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten bolts in a cross pattern to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specMounting Bolts37 Nm (27 lb-ft)
- 10Connect electrical connectorRemove protective cap from the canister vent solenoid. Align and push the electrical connector onto the solenoid until the locking tab clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector.
- 11Install vapor lines with new O-ringsInstall new O-rings on all vapor line quick-connect fittings. Lightly lubricate O-rings with clean engine oil. Remove protective caps from canister ports one at a time and connect vapor lines according to your labels. Push each line firmly until you hear and feel the locking tab click. Tug each line to verify secure connection.Torque specFuel Line Fittings25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall underbody panels and wheelReinstall any splash shields or underbody panels removed for access, securing all fasteners. Reinstall the driver side rear wheel and torque lug nuts to specification per service manual. Lower the vehicle from jack stands.
- 13Reconnect battery and clear codesReconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the terminal clamp. If available, use a scan tool to clear any stored EVAP diagnostic trouble codes. This allows the system to perform fresh diagnostic tests.
Reassembly
- Double-check all vapor line connections are fully seated and locked
- Verify electrical connector is securely attached to canister vent valve
- Ensure all mounting bolts are torqued to specification
- Confirm no tools or shop towels were left in the work area
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle for 2 minutes, listening for abnormal sounds or vacuum leaks
- Check for fuel vapor odors around the canister area while engine is running
- Perform a visual inspection under the vehicle to confirm no vapor lines are kinked or hanging loose
- With a scan tool, verify no EVAP system codes are present and leak detection pump tests pass
- Road test the vehicle and monitor for check engine light illumination
- After 24 hours of driving, recheck for EVAP codes as the system completes full diagnostic cycles
