This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the dimmer switch (multifunction turn signal lever) on a 2014 Ram 2500 with 6.7L Cummins diesel engine, including steering column cover removal and clockspring alignment verification.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes before beginning work to prevent airbag deployment. Failure to do so may result in serious injury.
The clockspring (spiral cable) is a sensitive component. Do not rotate the steering wheel with the clockspring disconnected or it may become misaligned, causing airbag and cruise control malfunction.
Mark steering wheel position relative to the column before disassembly to ensure proper clockspring alignment during reassembly.
ℹ️The dimmer switch contains the turn signal, headlight dimmer, windshield wiper, and washer controls. Verify which function has failed before replacement.

Parts

  • Dimmer switch (multifunction switch) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Steering column cover clips (if damaged) × 4 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Turn steering wheel to center straight-ahead position
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
  5. Tilt steering column to lowest position and telescope fully out for access
  6. Use masking tape to mark steering wheel position relative to column shaft for reassembly reference

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column cover
Locate the two T20 Torx screws at the bottom of the lower steering column cover. Remove both screws. Gently pull the lower cover downward and away from the column, releasing the retaining clips. Set cover aside with screws.
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
With lower cover removed, locate the two T20 Torx screws securing the upper steering column cover. Remove both screws. Carefully separate the upper cover from the column by releasing the forward clips. Lift cover up and over the steering wheel spoke to remove. Keep screws organized for reassembly.
  3. 3
    Disconnect dimmer switch electrical connectors
Locate the two electrical connectors on the back of the dimmer switch assembly. The upper connector is for turn signals and headlights, the lower connector is for wiper/washer controls. Press the red connector lock tabs and carefully pull connectors straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on wires.
  4. 4
    Remove dimmer switch mounting screws
Locate the two T15 Torx mounting screws securing the dimmer switch to the left side of the steering column. These screws are accessed from the side of the column. Remove both screws completely and retain for installation of new switch.
  5. 5
    Remove dimmer switch assembly
With mounting screws removed, carefully slide the dimmer switch assembly straight back away from the steering column. The switch lever will disengage from the column housing. Remove the switch completely and inspect the mounting area on the column for any debris or damage.
  6. 6
    Verify clockspring alignment
With the dimmer switch removed, visually inspect the clockspring (spiral cable) behind the steering wheel. The clockspring should be centered with the locking tab engaged. Verify the steering wheel has not been rotated from the marked center position. If clockspring appears rotated or damaged, it must be recentered or replaced before proceeding.
If the clockspring is not centered, do not continue installation. The clockspring must be properly centered to prevent airbag and steering wheel control failure.
  7. 7
    Install new dimmer switch
Remove new dimmer switch from packaging and verify it matches the original part. Align the switch lever with the opening in the steering column housing. Slide the switch assembly straight into position on the left side of the column until it seats flush against the mounting surface. Ensure the switch is fully seated before installing screws.
  8. 8
    Install dimmer switch mounting screws
Insert the two T15 Torx mounting screws through the dimmer switch and into the threaded holes in the steering column. Start both screws by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten screws evenly in a cross pattern using a torque wrench to the specified torque. Do not overtighten as this may strip the plastic column housing.

    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect the two electrical connectors to the back of the dimmer switch. Align connector keys and push firmly until the red lock tabs click into place. Gently pull on each connector to verify it is fully locked. Route wiring to prevent pinching during cover installation.
  10. 10
    Reinstall upper steering column cover
Position the upper steering column cover over the steering wheel spoke and align with the column. Ensure all wiring is properly routed and not pinched. Press the cover forward to engage the clips until fully seated. Install the two T20 Torx screws and tighten to specification.

  11. 11
    Reinstall lower steering column cover
Align the lower steering column cover with the upper cover and column. Press upward to engage all retaining clips around the perimeter. Install the two T20 Torx screws at the bottom of the cover and tighten to specification. Verify all clips are engaged and covers are secure with no gaps.

    Cover Screws15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and initialize system
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten the terminal clamp. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Observe that all warning lights illuminate normally, then turn off after a few seconds. The airbag light should extinguish after system self-check.
ℹ️If airbag light remains illuminated after 6-8 seconds, there may be a fault code stored. Use a scan tool to retrieve codes before operating vehicle.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure steering wheel remained in center position throughout entire procedure
  2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully locked with red tabs engaged
  3. Check that steering column covers are properly seated with no gaps or misalignment
  4. Confirm all Torx screws are tightened to specification and none were left loose
  5. Return steering column to desired tilt and telescope position

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify airbag light extinguishes after 6-8 seconds
  • Test turn signal function in both left and right positions, verify indicator lights and clicking sound
  • Test headlight dimmer function by switching between high and low beams multiple times
  • Activate windshield wipers in all speed settings including intermittent, low, and high
  • Test windshield washer function by pulling lever toward steering wheel
  • Verify cruise control buttons function properly if equipped on dimmer switch
  • Test all functions with engine running to ensure proper operation under electrical load
  • Check for any unusual noises or binding in the dimmer switch lever throughout full range of motion
  • Verify no warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster
