ℹ️A faulty fuel cap can trigger the check engine light with EVAP system codes

Tools required

Work gloves

Parts

  • Fuel cap × 1 — OEM Mopar fuel cap or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and turn off engine
  2. Allow fuel filler neck area to cool if vehicle was recently driven
  3. Locate fuel filler door on driver side rear of vehicle

Procedure

  1. 1
    Open fuel filler door
Press the center of the fuel filler door on the driver side rear quarter panel to release the spring-loaded latch and open the door fully.
  2. 2
    Remove old fuel cap
Turn the existing fuel cap counterclockwise (left) until it releases from the filler neck. The cap will click and disengage after approximately 1-2 full turns. Pull the cap away from the filler neck. If the cap has a tether, it will remain attached to the filler door.
  3. 3
    Inspect filler neck
Visually inspect the fuel filler neck threads and sealing surface for damage, debris, or corrosion. Clean any debris with a clean cloth if necessary. Check the tether attachment point on the filler door for damage if replacing a tethered cap.
  4. 4
    Install new fuel cap
Align the new fuel cap with the filler neck opening. If the cap has a tether, ensure it is properly attached to the filler door mount. Push the cap onto the filler neck and turn clockwise (right) until you hear and feel multiple clicks, typically 3-4 clicks. This ensures proper sealing.
  5. 5
    Verify installation
Tug gently on the installed cap to confirm it is fully seated and secure. The cap should not pull off or feel loose. Close the fuel filler door by pressing it shut until it latches.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure fuel filler door latches securely after closing
  2. If check engine light was on due to EVAP leak, it may take several drive cycles to clear the code

Verification

  • Confirm fuel cap clicks multiple times when tightened and is secure
  • Verify fuel filler door closes and latches properly
  • Check for absence of fuel odor around filler neck area
  • If applicable, monitor for check engine light after several drive cycles to confirm EVAP system integrity
