Parts
- H11 halogen headlight bulb (low beam) or D3S HID bulb (if equipped) × 1 — Use OEM specification - verify bulb type before purchase
Preparation
- Ensure engine is off and ignition key is removed
- Allow headlights to cool if recently operated
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Identify which headlight bulb needs replacement (driver or passenger side)
- Put on nitrile gloves to prevent skin oil contact with new bulb
Procedure
- 1Access headlight assembly from engine bayLocate the headlight assembly from behind in the engine bay. On the driver side, you may need to move the air intake tube slightly for better access. On the passenger side, access is more direct. Identify the bulb cover on the back of the headlight housing - it will be a round plastic cap approximately 4 inches in diameter.
- 2Remove bulb coverRotate the bulb cover counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn to unlock it. Pull the cover straight back away from the headlight housing. Set the cover aside in a clean area to prevent dirt contamination of the seal.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the back of the headlight bulb. Press the release tab on the connector and pull straight back to disconnect it from the bulb. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
- 4Release bulb retaining ringIdentify the wire retaining clip or ring that holds the bulb in place. Press the clip inward slightly and unhook it from the retaining tabs, then swing it out of the way. The bulb is now free to be removed.Torque specBulb Retaining Ring5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 5Remove old bulbCarefully pull the old bulb straight out of the headlight housing. Avoid twisting or forcing the bulb. Inspect the bulb socket in the housing for any corrosion, moisture, or debris. If moisture is present, allow it to dry before installing the new bulb.
- 6Prepare new bulbRemove the new bulb from its packaging. Handle only the plastic base - never touch the glass portion of the bulb with bare skin. If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth before installation. Verify the new bulb matches the old bulb type.
- 7Install new bulbAlign the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlight housing socket. Insert the bulb straight into the housing until it seats fully. The bulb should only fit in one orientation due to the tab alignment.
- 8Secure bulb retaining ringSwing the wire retaining clip back into position over the bulb base. Press it inward and hook it onto the retaining tabs to lock the bulb in place. Ensure the clip is fully seated and secure.Torque specBulb Retaining Ring5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the back of the new bulb until you hear or feel it click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked securely.
- 10Reinstall bulb coverAlign the bulb cover with the housing, ensuring the rubber seal is properly positioned. Push the cover onto the housing and rotate it clockwise approximately 1/4 turn to lock it in place. Verify the cover is fully seated to maintain the weatherproof seal.
Reassembly
- Return any moved components (such as air intake tubes) to their original positions
- Close hood securely
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and activate headlights to verify new bulb operates correctly
- Check both low beam and high beam functions if a dual-filament bulb was replaced
- Inspect headlight aim - if significantly different from the other side, headlight aiming may be necessary
- Verify bulb cover is properly sealed with no gaps that could allow moisture intrusion
