Parts
- Horn assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Horn mounting bracket (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow engine to cool if recently operated
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
- Remove driver side front wheel for improved access (optional but recommended)
Procedure
- 1Access horn locationFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the horn assembly mounted on the driver side frame rail just behind the front bumper. The horn is positioned between the frame rail and the inner fender liner. You may need to move aside any splash shields or undercoating for clear access.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the horn. Press the release tab and pull the connector straight off the horn terminal. Inspect the connector for corrosion or damage. If corrosion is present, clean with electrical contact cleaner or wire brush.
- 3Test horn circuit (optional diagnostic step)If diagnosing a horn failure, use a test light or multimeter to verify power at the horn connector when the horn button is pressed. Have an assistant press the horn button while you test. If no power is present, the issue is in the wiring or clock spring, not the horn itself.
- 4Remove horn mounting boltUsing a 10mm or 13mm socket (depending on bolt type), remove the horn mounting bolt that secures the horn bracket to the frame rail. Note the orientation of any washers or spacers. Support the horn with your free hand as you remove the bolt.Torque specHorn Mounting Bolt15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 5Remove horn assemblyPull the horn assembly away from the mounting bracket on the frame rail. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage, corrosion, or bent metal. If the bracket is damaged, it should be replaced to ensure proper horn mounting and grounding.
- 6Prepare mounting surfaceClean the mounting surface on the frame rail with a wire brush to ensure good electrical ground contact. Remove any rust, dirt, or debris. The horn relies on a good chassis ground through the mounting bracket for proper operation.
- 7Install new hornPosition the new horn assembly onto the mounting bracket, aligning the mounting hole with the frame rail threaded hole. Ensure any washers or spacers are installed in the correct order. Thread the mounting bolt by hand first to prevent cross-threading.Torque specHorn Mounting Bolt15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 8Connect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the horn terminal until you hear or feel it click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 9Reconnect battery and testReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification if applicable. Press the horn button on the steering wheel to verify proper horn operation. The horn should sound immediately with a clear, loud tone. If the horn does not sound, recheck electrical connections and ground contact.Torque specGround Bolt18 Nm (14 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reinstall driver side front wheel if removed and torque lug nuts to specification
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
- Remove wheel chocks
- Verify all tools and parts have been removed from engine bay and undercarriage
Verification
- Press horn button multiple times to confirm consistent operation
- Test horn button from steering wheel with key in both ON and ACC positions
- Inspect horn mounting area for any loose components or hardware
- Verify no warning lights are illuminated on instrument cluster
