Replace engine oil and filter on the 6.7L Cummins diesel engine using Mopar 5W-20 synthetic blend oil, including skid plate removal if equipped.

Warnings

⚠️Engine oil and components can be extremely hot. Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before starting work to avoid severe burns.
Used diesel engine oil contains contaminants. Avoid prolonged skin contact and dispose of used oil properly at a recycling facility.
Vehicle must be supported on jack stands, never rely solely on a hydraulic jack for support during undercarriage work.
ℹ️The 6.7L Cummins holds 13 quarts of oil. Ensure you have sufficient oil and drain capacity before beginning.

Parts

  • Engine oil filter (Mopar 68197867AA or equivalent) × 1 — 68197867AA
  • Oil drain plug crush washer × 1 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

  • Mopar 5W-20 Synthetic Blend — 13 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake.
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
  3. Start engine and run until it reaches operating temperature, then shut off and wait 30 minutes for oil to cool.
  4. Raise front of vehicle using floor jack and support securely on jack stands at frame rails.
  5. Verify vehicle is stable before working underneath.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove skid plate if equipped
If your Ram 2500 is equipped with an engine skid plate, remove the mounting bolts using a 13mm socket. Set aside skid plate and hardware for reinstallation.

    Skid Plate Bolts18 Nm (14 lb-ft)
  2. 2
Position drain pan and remove drain plug
Locate the oil drain plug on the driver's side of the oil pan. Position a large capacity drain pan (15+ quarts) beneath the drain plug. Using a 19mm socket or wrench, slowly loosen and remove the drain plug. Allow oil to drain completely, which may take 10-15 minutes due to the large oil capacity. Inspect the drain plug threads and sealing surface for damage.
    Torque spec
    Oil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Replace drain plug crush washer
Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and discard. Install a new crush washer onto the drain plug. Never reuse the old crush washer as this can lead to oil leaks.
  4. 4
    Reinstall oil drain plug
Once oil has fully drained, clean the drain plug and oil pan sealing surface with a clean rag. Thread the drain plug with new crush washer into the oil pan by hand to avoid cross-threading. Tighten to specification using a torque wrench.

  5. 5
    Remove old oil filter
Locate the oil filter on the driver's side of the engine block, below the fuel filter assembly. Position the drain pan beneath the filter. Using an oil filter wrench, loosen and remove the old oil filter. Allow remaining oil to drain from the filter mounting area. Clean the filter mounting surface on the engine block with a clean rag.
  6. 6
    Install new oil filter
Apply a thin coating of clean engine oil to the rubber gasket on the new oil filter. Thread the new filter onto the mounting boss by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface. Hand tighten the filter snugly, then rotate an additional 3/4 turn. Do not use the filter wrench for installation.

  7. 7
    Reinstall skid plate if equipped
If removed, reposition the engine skid plate and install all mounting bolts. Tighten bolts to specification using a torque wrench.

  8. 8
Lower vehicle and fill with oil
Carefully lower the vehicle from jack stands to the ground. Remove the oil filler cap located on the driver's side valve cover. Using a funnel, add 12 quarts of Mopar 5W-20 synthetic blend oil initially. Install the oil filler cap hand tight only.
  9. 9
Start engine and check for leaks
Start the engine and allow it to idle for 1-2 minutes. Monitor the oil pressure gauge to ensure normal pressure. Carefully inspect underneath the vehicle for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter. Shut off the engine.
  10. 10
    Check and adjust oil level
Wait 5 minutes for oil to settle into the pan. Remove the dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert fully, and remove again to check level. The oil level should be between the MIN and MAX marks. Add the remaining oil in small increments (approximately 1 quart at a time) until the level reaches the MAX mark. Do not overfill. Reinstall oil filler cap hand tight.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure oil filler cap is installed hand tight to specification.
  2. Verify skid plate is properly secured if equipped.
  3. Double-check that no tools or materials are left in the engine compartment or underneath the vehicle.

Verification

  • Confirm oil level is at MAX mark on dipstick when engine is cold and vehicle is on level ground.
  • Verify no oil leaks are present at the drain plug or oil filter after test drive.
  • Check that oil pressure gauge shows normal reading during idle and driving.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter properly at an approved recycling facility.
  • Reset oil change indicator in instrument cluster if equipped: Turn ignition to ON without starting, fully depress accelerator pedal three times within 10 seconds.
