Replace engine oil and oil filter on the 6.7L Cummins diesel engine, including proper disposal of used fluids and installation of a new crush washer on the drain plug.
Warnings
⚠️Engine oil is extremely hot after operation. Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before draining to prevent severe burns.
⚠The 6.7L Cummins uses 5W-40 synthetic oil, not the 5W-20 listed in generic specs. Verify correct oil specification in owner's manual.
⚠Dispose of used oil and filter at an approved recycling facility. Do not dump into drains or environment.
ℹ️This engine uses a cartridge-style oil filter with a housing cap, not a spin-on filter. Ensure you have the correct replacement cartridge.

Parts
- Engine oil filter cartridge (Mopar 68157291AA or equivalent) × 1 — 68157291AA
- Oil drain plug crush washer × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Oil filter housing O-ring (inspect and replace if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Mopar 5W-40 Synthetic Diesel Engine Oil — 12 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes if recently operated
- Raise front of vehicle using jack and support securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight
- Locate oil drain plug on passenger side of oil pan and oil filter housing on driver side of engine
- Place oil drain pan under drain plug with sufficient capacity for 12+ quarts
- Gather all tools, new filter, crush washer, and oil before beginning
Procedure
- 1Remove skid plate if equippedIf vehicle is equipped with an engine skid plate, remove the mounting bolts using a 13mm socket. Set skid plate aside and retain hardware for reinstallation.
- 2Drain engine oilPosition drain pan directly under oil drain plug on passenger side of oil pan. Using a 19mm socket, loosen drain plug slowly. Once loose, remove plug by hand quickly to avoid spilling. Allow oil to drain completely for at least 10 minutes. Inspect drain plug threads and sealing surface for damage.
- 3Install drain plug with new crush washerRemove old crush washer from drain plug and discard. Install new crush washer onto drain plug. Once oil has fully drained, wipe drain plug hole clean with a shop rag. Thread drain plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten to specification using torque wrench.Torque specOil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- 4Remove oil filter housing capReposition drain pan under oil filter housing on driver side of engine. Using appropriate oil filter cap wrench, loosen the filter housing cap by turning counterclockwise. Remove cap slowly as residual oil will drain from housing. Allow oil to drain into pan.
- 5Remove old filter cartridgeOnce oil stops draining, pull old filter cartridge straight out of housing. Inspect housing interior for debris or old O-ring material. Clean housing interior with a lint-free shop rag. Inspect the filter housing cap O-ring for cuts, cracks, or compression damage.
- 6Install new filter cartridge and O-ringIf O-ring shows any damage, replace with new O-ring. Lightly lubricate new O-ring with clean engine oil. Install new O-ring into groove on filter housing cap. Insert new filter cartridge into housing, ensuring it seats fully at bottom. Lightly lubricate cap threads and O-ring with clean oil.
- 7Install oil filter housing capThread filter housing cap into housing by hand until it bottoms out and O-ring makes contact. Using filter cap wrench and torque wrench, tighten cap to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage O-ring and cause leaks.Torque specOil Filter Housing Cap25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 8Reinstall skid plate if equippedIf skid plate was removed, align plate into position and install mounting bolts. Tighten bolts to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating.
- 9Fill engine with new oilLower vehicle to ground. Locate oil filler cap on top of engine valve cover. Remove filler cap and insert funnel. Add 11 quarts of 5W-40 synthetic diesel engine oil. Remove funnel and install filler cap hand-tight to specification.
- 10Start engine and check for leaksStart engine and allow to idle for 2-3 minutes. Monitor oil pressure gauge to verify normal pressure. While engine is running, inspect drain plug and filter housing for any signs of leakage. Shut off engine and wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back into pan.
- 11Check and adjust oil levelRemove dipstick, wipe clean, fully reinsert, then remove again to check oil level. Oil level should be between ADD and FULL marks on dipstick. Add oil in 0.5 quart increments as needed to reach FULL mark. Do not overfill. Recheck for leaks underneath vehicle.
Reassembly
- Ensure oil filler cap is properly tightened and seated
- Verify drain plug and filter housing show no signs of leakage
- Clean any spilled oil from engine and frame components
- Reset oil life monitoring system if equipped using dashboard menu or scan tool
Verification
- Start engine and verify oil pressure warning light extinguishes within 2-3 seconds
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and recheck for leaks at drain plug and filter housing
- Verify oil level is at FULL mark on dipstick after engine has been off for 5 minutes
- Confirm no oil spots on ground after test drive and cool-down period
- Verify oil life monitor has been reset to 100% if applicable
