Replace the PCV valve on the 6.7L Cummins diesel engine to restore proper crankcase ventilation and prevent oil leaks or excessive crankcase pressure.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before starting work to avoid burns from hot components
ℹ️The 6.7L Cummins uses a different crankcase ventilation system than gasoline engines; locate the correct PCV valve on the valve cover

Parts
- PCV valve × 1 — Use OEM Mopar specification for 6.7L Cummins
- PCV valve grommet/seal × 1 — Often included with PCV valve
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool completely
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Locate PCV valve on driver side valve cover near the front of the engine
Procedure
- 1Disconnect PCV hoseLocate the PCV valve on the driver side valve cover. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose from the PCV valve by gently pulling it off or releasing any retaining clip. Note the routing of the hose for reinstallation.
- 2Remove old PCV valveUsing a socket or appropriate tool, carefully unscrew the PCV valve from the valve cover in a counterclockwise direction. If the valve is stuck, gently rock it back and forth while turning. Remove the valve and inspect the grommet or seal that remains in the valve cover.
- 3Inspect valve cover openingClean the PCV valve mounting area on the valve cover with a clean shop rag. Remove the old grommet or seal if it did not come out with the valve. Inspect the mounting hole for any debris or oil buildup and clean thoroughly.
- 4Install new grommetIf a new grommet or seal is provided with the replacement PCV valve, install it into the valve cover mounting hole. Ensure it is fully seated and properly positioned before installing the valve.
- 5Install new PCV valveThread the new PCV valve into the valve cover by hand, ensuring it starts smoothly without cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use a torque wrench to tighten to specification. The valve should be snug but not over-tightened as it threads into aluminum.Torque specPCV Valve8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Reconnect ventilation hoseReconnect the crankcase ventilation hose to the new PCV valve, ensuring it is fully seated. Secure any retaining clips if equipped. Verify the hose routing matches the original configuration and has no kinks or sharp bends.
Reassembly
- Double-check all connections are secure and hose is properly routed
- Verify no tools or rags were left in engine compartment
Verification
- Start engine and allow to idle for 2-3 minutes
- Check for any unusual hissing sounds or vacuum leaks around the PCV valve
- Verify no oil leaks around the PCV valve mounting area
- Confirm engine idles smoothly without rough running or excessive smoke
- Check that crankcase ventilation hose connections are secure with no oil weeping
