Remove and replace the factory radio/head unit in a 2014 Ram 2500, including proper antenna and wiring harness connections.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and clock settings. Have the radio security code if applicable.
ℹ️If the vehicle has an amplified sound system, additional wiring adapters may be required for proper function.
Do not force trim panels as clips can break easily. Use proper trim removal tools.

Parts

  • Aftermarket radio/head unit with wiring harness adapter × 1 — Vehicle-specific harness adapter required
  • Dash kit/trim adapter (if not using factory radio) × 1 — Metra 95-6518B or equivalent
  • Antenna adapter (if required) × 1 — Check aftermarket radio compatibility

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
  3. Gather all replacement parts and verify wiring harness adapters are correct for vehicle
  4. Set climate controls to mid-position to ease trim panel removal

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower dash trim panel
Using trim removal tools, carefully pry out the lower dash trim panel below the radio. Start at the bottom edge and work around the perimeter. The panel is secured by plastic clips only. Pull firmly but carefully to release all clips and remove the panel.
  2. 2
    Remove climate control trim bezel
Insert trim removal tool at the edges of the trim bezel surrounding the climate controls and radio. Gently pry outward to release the retaining clips starting from the bottom corners. Work your way around the perimeter until all clips are released. Carefully pull the bezel forward far enough to access behind it, but do not remove completely yet.
  3. 3
    Disconnect climate control connectors
Reach behind the trim bezel and locate the electrical connectors for the climate control switches and hazard light switch. Press the release tabs on each connector and disconnect them. Now fully remove the trim bezel and set aside.
  4. 4
    Remove radio mounting bolts
Locate the four 7mm bolts securing the radio to the dash bracket (two on each side of the radio chassis). Using a 7mm socket, remove all four bolts and retain them for reinstallation. Carefully slide the radio forward several inches to access the rear connections.
  5. 5
    Disconnect radio wiring harnesses
Working from behind the radio, locate the large main wiring harness connector (typically gray), the antenna coaxial cable, and any auxiliary connectors (USB, AUX, satellite radio if equipped). Press the release tab on the main harness connector and pull straight back to disconnect. Unscrew the antenna cable by turning counterclockwise. Disconnect any remaining auxiliary connectors by pressing their release tabs.
  6. 6
    Remove factory radio
With all connections disconnected, slide the factory radio completely out of the dash opening. Inspect the mounting bracket and confirm it is compatible with the new radio. If installing an aftermarket radio, the mounting bracket may need to be removed from the factory radio and attached to the new unit using the dash kit.
  7. 7
Prepare new radio and wiring adapters
If installing an aftermarket radio, connect the vehicle-specific wiring harness adapter to the new radio's wiring harness according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure all connections match the wiring diagram provided (power, ground, speakers, accessory, illumination). Connect the antenna adapter if required. Secure all connections with electrical tape or heat shrink as appropriate.
  8. 8
Test new radio before final installation
Reconnect the negative battery terminal temporarily. Connect the wiring harness adapter to the vehicle's harness and antenna cable to the new radio without fully installing it. Turn the ignition to ACC position and verify the radio powers on, all speakers function, and antenna reception works. Check that steering wheel controls function if equipped. Once verified, disconnect battery again.
  9. 9
    Install new radio into dash
With battery disconnected, ensure all wiring is properly connected and routed to avoid pinching. If using a dash kit, ensure it is properly secured to the new radio per kit instructions. Carefully slide the new radio assembly into the dash opening, guiding the wiring harness and antenna cable. Align the mounting holes with the factory bracket.
  10. 10
    Secure radio mounting bolts
Install the four 7mm mounting bolts and tighten evenly in a cross pattern to ensure proper alignment. Tighten securely but do not overtighten as the radio chassis can be damaged. Verify the radio is flush with the dash opening and properly aligned.
  11. 11
Reconnect climate control and reinstall trim
Reconnect the electrical connectors to the climate control switches and hazard light switch. Ensure each connector clicks into place. Position the trim bezel over the radio and climate controls, aligning all mounting clips. Press firmly around the perimeter until all clips snap into place. Reinstall the lower dash trim panel by aligning clips and pressing until secure.
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and finalize
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to specification. Turn the ignition to ACC and verify radio powers on. Test all functions including volume, source selection, steering wheel controls, and all speakers. Set clock and radio presets as needed.

    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trim panels are fully seated with no gaps and all clips engaged
  2. Verify climate control functions operate normally after trim reinstallation
  3. Check that all dashboard warning lights extinguish normally after battery reconnection

Verification

  • Radio powers on with ignition in ACC or RUN position and turns off with ignition OFF
  • All speakers produce clear sound with no distortion or dropouts
  • AM/FM radio reception is clear and antenna is properly connected
  • Steering wheel audio controls function properly if equipped
  • Display brightness adjusts with vehicle dimmer switch
  • All trim panels are secure with no rattles or gaps
  • Climate controls operate normally with proper airflow
