Remove and replace the front sway bar (stabilizer bar) assembly, including bushings and mounting brackets, to restore proper anti-roll performance and eliminate clunking noises.
Warnings
⚠Vehicle must be supported on jack stands at all times when working underneath. Never rely on jack alone.
⚠Sway bar is under tension when vehicle is raised with suspension hanging. Control bar carefully when removing links.
ℹ️Apply penetrating oil to all fasteners 15-30 minutes before starting if vehicle is from salt-belt region.

Parts
- Front sway bar × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Sway bar bushings (pair) × 1 — Typically included with bar or separate
- Sway bar link assemblies × 2 — Left and right
- Sway bar bracket bolts × 4 — If corroded or damaged
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack at frame crossmember
- Support vehicle securely on jack stands under frame rails behind lower control arms
- Remove both front wheels for access
- Spray penetrating oil on sway bar link nuts and bracket bolts if fasteners show corrosion
Procedure
- 1Disconnect driver side sway bar linkLocate the sway bar link connecting the sway bar to the lower control arm on driver side. Insert 6mm Allen key into the ball stud shaft from behind to hold it stationary. Use 18mm wrench to remove the lower nut connecting link to control arm. If ball stud spins, apply penetrating oil and use vise grips on the ball stud boot area.
- 2Remove driver side link from sway barUse 6mm Allen key to hold the upper ball stud shaft and 18mm wrench to remove the upper nut connecting the link to the sway bar. Remove the driver side link assembly completely. Inspect link for worn bushings or torn boots.
- 3Disconnect passenger side sway bar linkRepeat disconnection process on passenger side. Insert 6mm Allen key into lower ball stud shaft and remove lower nut with 18mm wrench. Then remove upper nut while holding ball stud with Allen key. Remove passenger side link assembly.
- 4Remove sway bar mounting bracketsLocate the two sway bar mounting brackets bolted to the front axle housing. Each bracket is secured with two bolts. Use 15mm socket to remove all four bracket bolts. Support the sway bar with one hand as you remove the final bolts to prevent it from dropping suddenly.
- 5Remove sway bar and bushingsCarefully lower the sway bar and maneuver it out from the front suspension, working it around the steering linkage and axle components. Once removed, open the mounting brackets and remove the old rubber bushings from the bar. Note the orientation of bushing split for reassembly.
- 6Prepare new sway bar assemblyClean the mounting areas on the axle housing with wire brush. Inspect new sway bar for correct diameter and length. Install new bushings onto the sway bar with the bushing split facing toward the rear of vehicle. Apply a light coating of silicone grease to inside of bushings to reduce squeaking. Position mounting brackets over bushings but do not tighten yet.
- 7Install sway bar into vehicleManeuver the new sway bar assembly with loose brackets up into position, working around steering and suspension components. Align the bar so the link mounting points are positioned correctly relative to the lower control arms. Support the bar in position.
- 8Install and torque mounting bracketsAlign the mounting brackets to the bolt holes on the front axle housing. Start all four bracket bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Once all bolts are started, use 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten bracket bolts to specification in a cross pattern (front-rear, front-rear).Torque specSway Bar Bracket Bolts64 Nm (47 lb-ft)
- 9Install driver side sway bar linkPosition new driver side link with upper ball stud through sway bar mounting hole. Install upper nut finger tight. Then guide lower ball stud through lower control arm hole and install lower nut finger tight. Do not fully tighten yet to allow suspension articulation.
- 10Install passenger side sway bar linkRepeat link installation on passenger side. Install upper ball stud through sway bar hole with nut finger tight, then install lower ball stud through control arm with nut finger tight. Verify both links move freely without binding.
- 11Torque sway bar link nutsInsert 6mm Allen key into each ball stud shaft to prevent rotation. Use 18mm wrench and torque wrench to tighten all four link nuts (both upper and lower on each side) to specification. Torque upper nuts first, then lower nuts on each side.Torque specSway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall wheels and lower vehicleInstall both front wheels and hand-tighten lug nuts in star pattern. Raise vehicle slightly with floor jack to remove jack stands. Lower vehicle completely to ground. Torque wheel lug nuts to specification (130 lb-ft) in star pattern.
Reassembly
- Ensure all link nuts are torqued with Allen key holding ball stud to prevent bushing damage
- Verify sway bar bushings are properly seated in brackets with split facing rearward
- Double-check that all bracket bolts are torqued to specification
- Confirm no interference between sway bar and steering components through full steering range
Verification
- Bounce front end of vehicle to verify no clunking noises from sway bar area
- Turn steering wheel fully lock-to-lock while stationary to check for any binding or contact
- Test drive vehicle at low speed over bumps to confirm proper sway bar operation and no noise
- Visually inspect all connections after test drive for any looseness or movement
- Verify even tire contact during cornering indicates proper sway bar function
