Replace the Transmission Control Module (TCM) on a 2014 Ram 2500 with 6.7L Cummins diesel engine, including electrical disconnection, module removal, installation, and system relearn procedure.
Warnings
⚠The TCM requires programming and calibration after installation. Ensure you have access to proper diagnostic equipment or dealership support.
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require window re-initialization.
ℹ️The TCM is located on the driver side of the transmission case, near the bellhousing.

Parts
- Transmission Control Module (TCM) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- TCM mounting bracket (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Allow engine to cool if recently operated
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 5 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Raise and support vehicle on jack stands if additional clearance is needed for access
- Locate TCM on driver side of transmission case near bellhousing area
Procedure
- 1Access the TCM locationFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the TCM mounted on the driver side of the transmission case. The module is a rectangular aluminum housing with electrical connectors on top. You may need to remove any heat shields or protective covers that obstruct access to the module.
- 2Disconnect TCM electrical connectorsIdentify the two large electrical connectors on top of the TCM. Press the red locking tabs on each connector and carefully pull them straight up and away from the module. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage. If connectors are tight, gently rock them side-to-side while pulling upward.⚠Do not pull on the wiring harness itself. Pull only on the connector body to avoid damaging pins or wires.
- 3Remove TCM mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the three mounting bolts securing the TCM to the transmission case. Keep track of bolt locations as they may be different lengths. Support the module while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specMounting Bolts37 Nm (27 lb-ft)
- 4Remove TCM from transmissionCarefully pull the TCM straight out from the transmission case. The module may have an O-ring seal where it mates to the transmission. Inspect the O-ring and mounting surface for damage or debris. If the O-ring is damaged or remains in the transmission case, remove it carefully.
- 5Prepare new TCM for installationIf the new TCM does not include an O-ring, transfer the old O-ring if it is in good condition, or install a new one. Lightly coat the O-ring with clean ATF+4 transmission fluid. Inspect the mounting surface on the transmission case and clean if necessary. Verify the new TCM part number matches the original.
- 6Install new TCMAlign the new TCM with the mounting holes on the transmission case. Carefully push the module into place, ensuring the O-ring seats properly. Do not force the module. Install the three mounting bolts finger-tight, then torque in a cross-pattern to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specMounting Bolts37 Nm (27 lb-ft)
- 7Reconnect electrical connectorsApply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector pins if desired for corrosion protection. Align each electrical connector with the pins on the TCM and press down firmly until you hear and feel the locking tabs click into place. Verify both connectors are fully seated and locked.
- 8Reconnect battery and perform initial checksReconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. Check for any immediate warning lights or fault codes. The transmission warning light may illuminate until programming is complete.
- 9Program and calibrate TCMConnect an OBD-II scan tool with TCM programming capability to the vehicle's diagnostic port. Follow the manufacturer's programming procedure to flash the TCM with the correct software and vehicle calibration data. This process typically takes 15-30 minutes and requires a stable power supply. Do not interrupt programming or turn off the ignition during this process.⚠️Interrupting the programming process can render the TCM inoperable. Ensure battery is fully charged and connections are secure before beginning.
- 10Perform TCM relearn procedureAfter programming is complete, perform the transmission adaptive learning procedure. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. With the vehicle stationary and brake applied, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-3-2-1) and hold each position for 5 seconds. Return to Park. This initializes the TCM shift strategy.
Reassembly
- Reinstall any heat shields or protective covers removed during access
- Lower vehicle from jack stands if raised
- Reset power windows by fully lowering and raising each window while holding the switch for 2 seconds at each end position
- Reset radio presets and clock as needed
Verification
- Start engine and verify no transmission warning lights remain illuminated on the instrument cluster
- Use scan tool to verify no TCM-related diagnostic trouble codes are present
- Test drive vehicle through all gear ranges, verifying smooth shifts and proper transmission operation
- Check for proper speedometer and odometer function
- Verify transmission temperature gauge operates correctly if equipped
- Confirm no fluid leaks are present around the TCM mounting area after test drive
