Parts
- Turn signal/multifunction switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
- Adjust steering column to lowest tilt and telescope position for better access
- Mark or photograph wire connector orientations before removal for easier reinstallation
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverLocate the two Torx T20 screws at the bottom of the lower steering column cover. Remove both screws, then carefully pull the lower cover away from the column, disengaging the retaining clips. Set aside the cover and screws.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 2Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower cover removed, locate the Torx T20 screws securing the upper steering column cover. Remove these screws, then lift the upper cover up and over the steering shaft. Note the alignment tabs and clips for reassembly.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 3Locate turn signal switch assemblyIdentify the turn signal/multifunction switch on the left side of the steering column. The switch includes the turn signal lever and is mounted to the steering column with two mounting screws. Identify all electrical connectors attached to the switch body.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the electrical connector(s) on the switch assembly. Press the locking tab on each connector while pulling straight out to disconnect. There are typically 2-3 connectors depending on options (turn signal, wiper, cruise control). Use masking tape to label each connector position if needed.⚠Do not pull on wires; only pull on connector bodies to avoid damaging wire terminals.
- 5Remove switch mounting screwsUsing the Torx T20 driver, remove the two screws securing the turn signal switch assembly to the steering column mounting bracket. Support the switch assembly as you remove the second screw to prevent it from falling.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 6Remove turn signal switch assemblyCarefully slide the turn signal switch assembly off the steering column. Guide the turn signal lever through the opening and remove the complete assembly. Inspect the mounting location on the steering column for any debris or damage.
- 7Install new turn signal switchPosition the new turn signal switch assembly onto the steering column, aligning the mounting holes with the bracket. Guide the turn signal lever through the proper opening. Ensure the switch sits flush against the column mounting surface before installing screws.ℹ️Verify the clockspring connector orientation aligns properly before seating the switch assembly.
- 8Install and torque switch mounting screwsInstall both mounting screws by hand, ensuring they thread properly without cross-threading. Once both screws are started, torque each screw to specification using a torque wrench. Alternate between screws to ensure even seating.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect all electrical connectors to the turn signal switch assembly, ensuring each connector clicks into place and the locking tabs engage fully. Verify each connection by gently tugging on the connector body. Route wiring to match original configuration.⚠Ensure connectors are fully seated; partial connections will cause malfunction or error codes.
- 10Reinstall upper steering column coverPosition the upper steering column cover over the steering shaft, aligning it with the lower mounting surface. Ensure all alignment tabs and clips are properly engaged. Install the mounting screws and torque to specification.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall lower steering column coverAlign the lower steering column cover with the upper cover and column assembly. Press firmly to engage all retaining clips around the perimeter. Install the two bottom mounting screws and torque to specification.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect battery and initialize systemReconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. Observe the instrument cluster for any warning lights related to the turn signal system. Check that no airbag warning lights remain illuminated after system initialization.
Reassembly
- Ensure all steering column cover screws are torqued to specification to prevent rattles
- Verify steering column covers are fully seated with no gaps
- Confirm turn signal lever operates smoothly through full range of motion
- Check that all electrical connectors are fully locked and secured
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and verify instrument cluster turn signal indicators flash when lever is operated in both left and right positions
- Test hazard light function by pressing hazard switch; all four turn signals should flash
- Verify windshield wiper controls function properly (if integrated with multifunction switch)
- Test cruise control functions if equipped and integrated with the switch assembly
- Confirm high beam and flash-to-pass functions operate correctly
- Check that turn signal lever returns to center position after completing a turn
- Verify no warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster
- Test drive vehicle to confirm turn signals automatically cancel after turning and all functions work under normal driving conditions
