This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the wiper switch (multifunction switch) on the steering column of a 2014 Ram 2500 with the 6.7L Cummins diesel engine.
Warnings
⚠Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes before beginning work to allow the airbag system capacitor to discharge.
⚠Do not rotate the clockspring or steering wheel with the steering column disconnected, as this can damage the clockspring assembly.
ℹ️The steering wheel does not need to be removed for this procedure, but care must be taken not to disturb the clockspring connector.

Parts
- Wiper/Multifunction Switch Assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition to the OFF position and remove the key.
- Ensure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding.
- Gather all necessary tools and the replacement wiper switch.
Procedure
- 1Disconnect BatteryDisconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket. Move the cable away from the battery post to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait a minimum of 2 minutes to allow airbag system capacitor discharge.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove Lower Steering Column CoverLocate the lower steering column shroud below the steering column. Remove the retaining screws (typically T20 or T25 Torx) securing the lower cover. There are usually 2-3 screws on the underside. Carefully pull the lower cover away from the column and set aside.Torque specCover Screws15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 3Remove Upper Steering Column CoverRemove the retaining screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2 screws). Gently separate the upper cover from the lower cover at the seam, being careful not to break the alignment tabs. Lift the upper cover up and over the steering wheel, then set aside.Torque specCover Screws15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 4Locate Wiper Switch ConnectorIdentify the wiper switch electrical connector on the left side of the steering column. The connector is typically gray or black and connects to the rear of the wiper switch assembly. Press the locking tab on the connector and carefully pull it straight back to disconnect. If access is limited, you may need to trace the wire harness down the column.⚠Do not pull on the wires themselves; always grip the connector body to avoid damaging the terminals.
- 5Remove Wiper Switch Retaining ScrewsLocate the two Torx screws (typically T20) securing the wiper switch assembly to the left side of the steering column. These screws are usually positioned vertically on the switch housing. Remove both screws completely and retain them for reinstallation.
- 6Remove Wiper Switch AssemblyWith the screws removed and connector disconnected, carefully slide the wiper switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may have a small alignment tab that needs to clear the column housing. Pull the switch straight out to avoid binding. Inspect the old switch for any signs of damage or wear.
- 7Install New Wiper SwitchPosition the new wiper switch assembly onto the steering column, ensuring the alignment tab engages properly with the slot in the column housing. Slide the switch fully into position until it seats flush against the column. Verify the switch lever operates smoothly through all positions before securing.
- 8Install Retaining ScrewsInstall the two Torx retaining screws finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once both screws are started, tighten them evenly using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as the plastic housing can crack.⚠The switch housing is plastic and can crack if screws are overtightened. Use proper torque specifications.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect Electrical ConnectorAlign the electrical connector with the wiper switch terminal and push it straight in until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked in place. Ensure no wires are pinched between components.
- 10Reinstall Steering Column CoversPosition the upper steering column cover over the steering wheel and align it with the lower cover. Ensure all wiring is properly routed and not pinched. Install the upper cover screws and tighten to specification. Install the lower cover, ensuring all tabs are engaged, then install and tighten the lower cover screws to specification.Torque specCover Screws15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect BatteryReconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Tighten the battery terminal bolt to the specified torque. Ensure the connection is clean and secure.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all steering column covers are properly secured with no gaps or misalignment.
- Ensure no tools or parts were left in the steering column area.
- Check that all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked.
Verification
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine off) and verify the instrument cluster illuminates without warning lights related to the wiper system.
- Test all wiper switch functions: intermittent (all delay settings), low speed, high speed, and mist function.
- Test the washer function to ensure it activates properly and wipers perform the follow-up wipe cycles.
- Verify the wiper switch returns to the OFF position properly and wipers park correctly.
- Check for any abnormal noises or binding in the switch operation.
- If equipped, verify rear wiper controls function properly (if integrated into the same switch).
- Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that may have been set during battery disconnection using a scan tool if available.
