Replacement of the multifunction turn signal stalk on a 2024 Tesla Model X. The stalk assembly mounts to the steering column clockspring and requires careful removal of the column shrouds without damaging the trim clips.
Warnings
⚠️The steering column contains the SRS clockspring/airbag wiring. Do NOT rotate the steering wheel or column while the switch/clockspring is disconnected — this can damage the clockspring and disable the driver airbag.
⚠2024 Model X uses steer-by-wire-adjacent electronics and capacitive controls on the wheel. Disconnect the 12V battery and wait before unplugging any column connectors to avoid setting SRS or steering DTCs.
⚠Falcon-wing doors: keep the key fob well away from the vehicle during service. Inadvertent door actuation while you are working inside the cabin can pin you against the headliner or B-pillar area.
ℹ️Aluminum body and soft interior trim — do not pry against painted or soft-touch surfaces. Use plastic trim tools only.

Parts
- Turn signal / multifunction stalk assembly (left-hand column switch) × 1 — OEM Tesla Model X 2024 turn signal switch — confirm part via VIN
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery in the frunk (similar position to Model S). Insulate the negative terminal so it cannot spring back.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Center the steering wheel (wheels straight ahead) before disconnecting the battery so the clockspring stays centered.
- Tilt and telescope the steering column to its fullest-out, lowest position for working clearance (do this BEFORE 12V disconnect, since the column is power-adjusted).
- Allow at least 2 additional minutes after 12V disconnect for SRS capacitors to discharge before touching column wiring.
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column shroudUsing a plastic trim tool, release the lower column shroud from the upper shroud at the seam. Remove any retaining screws from the underside of the shroud. Lower the bottom half away from the column.
- 2Remove upper steering column shroudLift the upper shroud off the column. Note any alignment tabs at the front near the instrument cluster. Set the shrouds aside on a clean, padded surface to prevent scratches.⚠Do not pry against the soft-touch dash trim — Model X interior trim marks easily.
- 3Identify the turn signal/multifunction stalkOn the 2024 Model X, the left-hand column stalk is the turn signal/multifunction switch. Confirm the connector and mounting screws are accessible. Do NOT disturb the clockspring, the airbag squib (typically yellow connector), or the steering angle sensor.⚠️Yellow SRS connectors are airbag circuits. Do not unplug or probe them.
- 4Disconnect the stalk electrical connectorRelease the locking tab on the stalk's wiring connector and unplug it from the column harness. Inspect for any corrosion or bent pins; replace the harness pigtail only if Tesla service information specifies a repair kit — otherwise leave the harness alone.
- 5Remove the stalk mounting screwsRemove the small screws securing the stalk to the column switch carrier / clockspring assembly. Support the stalk so it does not fall and stress the harness. Withdraw the stalk straight out of its mounting channel.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 6Compare old and new switchesPlace the new stalk next to the old one and verify identical connector keying, lever length, and detent feel. A mismatched part will fit mechanically but throw turn-signal or auto-high-beam faults on the central display.
- 7Install the new stalkSlide the new stalk into the carrier in the same orientation as removed. Start the mounting screws by hand to avoid cross-threading the plastic carrier, then snug them in a cross pattern.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect the stalk harnessPlug the harness connector into the new stalk until the locking tab clicks fully home. Tug-test the connector. Route the harness so it cannot be pinched by the shroud halves.
- 9Reinstall column shroudsReinstall the upper shroud first, ensuring it seats around the cluster without gaps. Install the lower shroud, mate the seam, and install the shroud retaining screws. Confirm the steering wheel still tilts/telescopes freely (manually rock the column lightly — do not power-adjust yet).Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify nothing (tools, fasteners, trim clips) was left inside the column area.
- Reconnect the 12V battery in the frunk. Torque the negative terminal to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
- Close the frunk and ensure it latches fully (Model X frunk uses powered/assisted latching depending on configuration — verify the touchscreen does not show a frunk-open warning).
- With the doors closed, reinsert the key fob/phone key range and wake the vehicle. Allow the MCU to fully boot.
- Wait for the SRS / airbag warning (if any) to self-clear after a complete drive cycle. If it persists, a scan tool capable of communicating with Tesla modules will be required to clear stored DTCs.
Verification
- On the touchscreen, confirm no SRS, EPS, or 'Service Vehicle Soon' alerts are present.
- Test left and right turn signals (single-tap lane-change pulse and full latch) — confirm both arrows on the cluster/HUD and audible click via cabin speakers.
- Test high-beam flash-to-pass and headlight high-beam latch (if integrated on this stalk variant).
- Test wiper/washer functions if combined on the same multifunction module — on 2024 Model X the wiper is a stalk-mounted control on this generation, verify intermittent, low, high, and washer spray.
- Test Autopilot/Autosteer engagement gesture if it uses the stalk; confirm the vehicle responds correctly on a safe, empty road.
- Cycle the steering wheel lock-to-lock once at low speed and confirm no clockspring noise, no warning lights, and that the steering angle reads 0° straight ahead in service mode or via a brief straight drive.
- While you have the column apart is also a good time to note Tesla service intervals not directly related to this job: brake fluid every 2 years, cabin air filter every 2 years (3 years if HEPA-equipped), and tire rotation every 6,250 miles.
