Replacement of the overhead sunroof/console switch assembly on a 2024 Model Y Performance. Note: most Model Y vehicles have a fixed glass roof with no opening panel — verify the vehicle is equipped with an actual switch before proceeding.
Warnings
⚠The Model Y headliner is a single-piece molded panel that creases permanently if flexed. Do not pull or bend the headliner to access the switch.
⚠Most 2024 Model Y vehicles ship with a fixed panoramic glass roof and no operable sunroof. Confirm the vehicle actually has an opening roof and a real switch (not a blank) before ordering parts.
ℹ️Interior trim clips on Tesla vehicles are brittle and frequently single-use — have replacement clips on hand.
⚠️If you see any orange cabling while working in the headliner area (extremely unlikely for this job), STOP. Orange = high voltage.
Tools required
Plastic interior trim removal pry toolsEssential
Nylon panel pry wedge
Small Phillips screwdriver
10mm socket and ratchet (for 12V battery terminal)Essential
Microfiber cloth (to protect headliner)
Parts
- Overhead switch / control module assembly (manufacturer-specified) × 1 — OEM Tesla replacement switch — verify by VIN
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, and engage the parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. On the 2024 Model Y, the 12V (low-voltage) battery is located under the rear seat area / front trunk depending on build — refer to the in-vehicle service mode location for this VIN.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Confirm vehicle is equipped with an opening roof panel and a functional switch (vs. a blank trim plug).
- Allow the cabin to cool if recently in sun — hot headliner adhesive and plastics are easier to deform.
Procedure
- 1Confirm switch locationOn 2024 Model Y, overhead controls (if equipped) sit in the front overhead console between the dome lights. Visually inspect the switch and identify the seam between the switch bezel and the headliner.
- 2Release the switch bezelUsing a plastic trim pry tool wrapped in microfiber, gently pry along the short edge of the switch/console bezel. Work slowly to release the retention clips without flexing the surrounding headliner. Do not use metal tools against the headliner.⚠Headliner fabric will show permanent dents from any tool pressure — always pad your pry tool.
- 3Lower the assemblyOnce clips release, carefully lower the switch/console assembly just enough to access the wiring connector(s) on the back. Do not let it hang by the harness.
- 4Disconnect the harnessDepress the locking tab on the electrical connector and unplug it from the switch module. Inspect the connector for corrosion or bent pins.
- 5Transfer or replaceIf replacing the entire console, set the old unit aside. If only the switch sub-module is being swapped, separate it from the carrier per the manufacturer-specified method (typically small retaining tabs or screws).
- 6Connect the new switchPlug the harness into the new switch assembly until you hear/feel the connector lock click. Tug-test gently to confirm it is fully seated.
- 7Seat the assemblyAlign the new bezel/assembly with the headliner opening and press evenly around the perimeter until all retention clips snap home. Confirm a flush, even gap to the headliner on all sides.⚠Do not strike the panel with a fist or hammer to seat clips — press with even palm pressure only.
Reassembly
- Verify no tools, clips, or trim fragments remain in the headliner area.
- Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. Torque the terminal hardware to the Battery Terminal Bolts spec (6.0 Nm / 4.0 lb-ft) — do not overtighten.
- Close the doors and allow the vehicle a minute to wake and re-initialize low-voltage systems.
Verification
- Press the new switch through all functions (open, vent, close, one-touch if equipped) and confirm the roof panel responds correctly.
- Verify the auto-reverse / anti-pinch function operates per the owner's manual — Tesla roof panels typically require a re-initialization cycle after a power loss; follow the in-manual procedure (usually hold the close input until a full close+reopen cycle completes).
- Check for any new alerts on the center display.
- Inspect the bezel for flush fitment with the headliner and confirm no rattles when closing doors.
- While the 12V was disconnected, this is a good time to note: Tesla recommends brake fluid service every 2 years and cabin air filter replacement every 2 years — check service history if due.
