Warnings

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery if performing any work beyond a basic rotation.     Place a Tesla-compatible puck/jack pad adapter at each lifting point. Lift one corner (or one side, or full vehicle) and place a jack stand under the same lift point. NEVER place a jack or stand on the battery pack, plastic aero shield, or anywhere other than the designated points.

    With the wheel off the ground, remove the 5 lug nuts and pull the wheel straight off. If it sticks to the hub due to corrosion, do not strike with a steel hammer — use a rubber mallet on the tire sidewall. Set wheels aside in a way that preserves your LF/RF/LR/RR markings.

    With wheels off, visually inspect: brake pad thickness through the caliper window (front Performance has Brembo 4-piston calipers — inspect for pad taper and rotor lip), rotor surface condition, any signs of caliper sticking, CV boot integrity (front and rear half-shafts on AWD), and wheel bearing play (rock the hub at 12/6 o'clock — should be zero perceptible play). Note brake fluid service interval: Tesla recommends every 2 years regardless of mileage.

    Wire-brush the hub face where it meets the wheel center bore to remove rust/corrosion. Clean the wheel center bore as well. A clean hub-to-wheel interface prevents stuck wheels next time and prevents lug nut loosening from corrosion-induced clamp load loss.

    Reinstall wheels in new positions
    Following the rotation pattern decided in Step 1, mount each wheel onto its new hub. Hand-thread all 5 lug nuts to seat the wheel flat against the hub. Do not use anti-seize on the studs — Tesla does not specify it and it can alter clamp load.

    Snug lug nuts in star pattern
    With the wheel still off the ground, snug all 5 lug nuts in a star (criss-cross) pattern to roughly 40-50 Nm. This seats the wheel evenly before final torque.

    Lower the vehicle until the tires firmly contact the ground but the suspension is not yet fully loaded (this prevents the wheel from spinning during final torque). Using a calibrated torque wrench, torque the lug nuts to 130 Nm (96 lb-ft) in a star pattern for the alloy wheels on this Performance trim. Then fully lower and remove jack stands.

    Press the aero/lug nut covers back into place if your wheels have them. Verify they snap fully seated.
