Replacement of a front door power window regulator on a 2024 Model Y Performance. The regulator is accessed by removing the interior door card and the door's water/vapor barrier, then unbolting the regulator assembly from the door shell.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery before working inside the door. The window motor and door electronics are live with the vehicle awake, and the Model Y wakes from sentry/wake events even when 'off'.
The Model Y has frameless door glass. Once the regulator is unbolted, the glass can drop into the door cavity and crack against internal structure — secure it with tape or a glass holder before disconnecting the regulator.
Model Y body panels and door shell are aluminum/composite — do not strike with a hammer or pry aggressively against painted edges.
After 12V reconnection, the window will lose its auto-up/anti-pinch calibration. It must be re-initialized or auto-up and pinch protection will not function correctly.
ℹ️Do NOT pierce, cut, or route tools near any orange cabling. Orange cabling does not run through the doors on Model Y, but if you see any, STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.

Parts

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, and engage the parking brake.
  2. Exit all doors with the key fob/phone key away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery (located under the rear seat / rear cargo area area on Model Y — refer to the architecture notes). Reference Battery Terminal Bolts torque on reinstallation.
  4. Confirm no orange HV cable is exposed in the work area. If any orange cable, HV component, or unknown energized state is encountered: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  5. Lower the window approximately halfway BEFORE disconnecting the 12V — this exposes the regulator-to-glass mounting points through the door shell access holes.
  6. Place a soft blanket or fender cover over the door sill and lay out parts on a clean surface; mask the painted door edge with painter's tape to prevent scuffing during panel removal.
  7. Verify which side (driver or passenger) regulator is being replaced and confirm the replacement part matches.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Pre-position window glass
    With 12V still connected, lower the affected window roughly halfway so the glass-to-regulator clamping bolts are visible through the access holes in the door shell. Then perform the safety preamble shutdown and disconnect the 12V battery. Once 12V is disconnected, the glass cannot be moved electrically.
    Do not skip this — if the window is fully up, you cannot reach the glass clamps without forcing the regulator.

    Remove interior door panel trim pieces
    Carefully pry the interior door release/handle bezel and any trim caps using a plastic trim tool. Disconnect any small electrical connectors (door release switch, tweeter if applicable) as they are exposed. Work from the bottom edge of the door card upward, releasing the perimeter clips. Do not yank — the door card is retained by clips along the bottom and sides and hooked at the top windowsill.

    Lift door card off the windowsill hook
    Once perimeter clips are released, lift the door card straight up to disengage the upper hook over the inner belt molding. Tilt the panel away from the door and disconnect the main wiring harness connector(s) and any door-mounted control module connectors. Set the door card aside on a soft surface, interior face up.

    Remove vapor barrier / acoustic sheet
    Carefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier from the inner door shell. Use a plastic spudger to break the butyl seal cleanly so the barrier can be reused if undamaged. Fold the sheet upward and tape it out of the way. Inspect for any moisture damage or broken clips inside the door.

    Secure the window glass
    With the glass at the half-down position, use strong tape (e.g., gaffer tape) across the top of the glass to the outer door frame, or use a window holder/suction cup. The glass MUST be supported before the regulator is unbolted from it.
    Frameless glass will fall freely once unclamped. A dropped pane can shatter or crack the door inner skin.

    Disconnect glass from regulator carrier
    Through the large access holes in the inner door, locate the regulator carrier-to-glass clamping fasteners. Loosen and remove per the OEM specification. Once the glass is free of the carriers, gently lift the glass upward in the door frame and tape it securely in the fully raised position to keep it out of the work area.

    Disconnect regulator motor electrical connector
    Locate the regulator motor harness connector inside the door shell. Release the connector lock tab and disconnect it. Free the harness from any clips along the regulator rail.

    Unbolt regulator assembly from door shell
    Remove the fasteners securing the regulator rail(s) and motor to the inner door shell. Support the regulator with one hand as the last fasteners come out — the assembly is awkward and can drop into the bottom of the door cavity. Torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual for these fasteners on reassembly.

    Maneuver regulator out of door cavity
    Tilt the regulator assembly and remove it through the largest service opening in the inner door shell. The motor body typically must be rotated to clear the opening. Do not force — reposition as needed.

    Compare old vs new regulator
    Place the old and new regulators side-by-side. Verify rail length, motor orientation, connector style, and carrier clamp design match exactly. If anti-rattle foam or transport tabs are present on the new unit, follow the manufacturer's instructions before installation.

    Install new regulator into door
    Feed the new regulator into the door cavity in the reverse orientation of removal. Loosely start all mounting fasteners to the door shell, then snug them in a cross pattern. Final-torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
    ℹ️Do not fully tighten until the glass is reattached and verified to travel squarely in the channel.

    Reconnect motor harness and reattach glass
    Plug in the regulator motor connector and re-clip the harness. Lower the glass back down onto the regulator carriers, align it in the channel, and tighten the glass clamping fasteners to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual. Remove the tape supporting the glass.

Reassembly

  1. Verify the regulator rail mounting fasteners are fully torqued to OEM specification.
  2. Reinstall the vapor barrier, pressing the butyl back into a continuous seal. Add fresh butyl rope where the original is thin or contaminated — a poor seal will cause water intrusion and HVAC noise.
  3. Reconnect any door-side electrical connectors (door card harness, switches, tweeter).
  4. Hook the top of the door card over the inner belt molding first, then press the perimeter clips home with palm pressure. Replace any broken push-pin retainers.
  5. Reinstall the door release/handle bezel and trim caps.
  6. Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. Torque the terminal to the Battery Terminal Bolts spec — do not overtighten.
  7. Allow the vehicle to fully wake (touchscreen up, doors recognized).

Verification

  • Re-initialize the window: with the door closed, hold the window switch DOWN until the glass fully bottoms out and hold ~2 additional seconds; then hold the switch UP until the glass fully closes and hold ~2 additional seconds. This re-teaches the end stops and re-enables auto-up and anti-pinch.
  • Cycle the window fully up and down several times. Listen for binding, scraping, or motor strain. Glass should travel evenly without tilting front-to-rear.
  • Test the auto-up anti-pinch function with a soft, non-fragile object (e.g., a rolled towel) — the window must reverse on contact. If it does not, do not use the vehicle until anti-pinch is functional.
  • Open and close the door — check that the frameless glass drops slightly on door open and re-seals on close (Model Y auto-index behavior).
  • Spray a light water test along the top of the glass and door seal; check inside the door card for leaks indicating the vapor barrier seal was not restored.
  • Confirm no chimes, BSD/window faults, or alerts on the touchscreen after a full drive cycle.
  • While the door card is off is also a good opportunity to inspect the cabin air filter service interval (Tesla recommends replacement every 2 years) and tire rotation interval (every ~6,250 mi on Model Y Performance due to high tire wear).
