Replacement of the brake master cylinder on the 2012 Tesla Roadster. Note: the Roadster uses the Lotus Elise-derived chassis and brake hydraulic system, so most components are Lotus-sourced rather than Tesla-specific.
Warnings
⚠️Even on this non-HV job, the Roadster has a 375V battery pack with orange HV cabling routed through the chassis. Do not touch, cut, or pierce any orange cable.
⚠Brake fluid will damage paint and the Roadster's exposed carbon/composite bodywork. Cover surrounding panels and wipe spills immediately.
⚠The Roadster does NOT have a vacuum brake booster like later Teslas — it uses a direct-acting (non-boosted or lightly assisted) system derived from the Lotus Elise. Pedal feel after bleeding will be firmer than typical assisted systems; do not assume a problem.
ℹ️Service information for the 2012 Roadster is extremely limited. If any fitting, bracket, or routing differs from this guide, STOP and consult the official Tesla Roadster Service Manual or a qualified specialist.
⚠Never reuse old brake fluid. Brake fluid is hygroscopic — use only fluid from a freshly opened sealed container.

Parts
- Brake master cylinder assembly (Roadster/Lotus Elise-spec) × 1 — Manufacturer-specified replacement — verify by VIN
- Master cylinder reservoir seal/grommets (if supplied separately) × 1 — OEM kit with master cylinder
Fluids
- DOT 3 Brake Fluid (sealed, fresh container) — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place transmission in gear (or P on automatic-equipped variants), and engage the parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. On the 2012 Roadster the 12V auxiliary battery is located in the front compartment area — refer to the owner/service manual for exact location and disconnect sequence.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Confirm you have the correct replacement master cylinder for this VIN — Roadster brake hydraulics are Lotus Elise-derived and not interchangeable with other Tesla models.
- Place fender covers and absorbent rags around the master cylinder to protect bodywork and HV-adjacent harnesses from brake fluid.
- Have a sealed container of fresh DOT 3 brake fluid on hand — do not substitute DOT 5 silicone fluid.
Procedure
- 1Access the master cylinderOpen the front service compartment to expose the master cylinder and reservoir. Inspect routing of any nearby low-voltage harnesses and HV cabling before working. If any orange HV cable is in the work area, re-verify de-energization and proceed with extreme caution.⚠️If orange HV cabling is in the work area, do not flex, pinch, or contact it with tools.
- 2Evacuate brake fluid from the reservoirRemove the reservoir cap and use a clean fluid syringe or transfer pump to draw out as much brake fluid as possible from the reservoir. Dispose of used fluid properly. Reinstalling the cap loosely between operations reduces fluid weeping.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorsDisconnect any low-voltage connectors at the reservoir (fluid level switch) and any sensors on the master cylinder body. Note routing for reinstallation. Do not pull on wires — release the connector latch.
- 4Disconnect hydraulic lines from the master cylinderPlace rags below the master cylinder. Using a flare-nut/line wrench (NOT an open-end wrench) loosen each hydraulic line fitting at the master cylinder. Catch dripping fluid. Cap or plug each line and the master cylinder ports immediately to keep contamination out and limit fluid loss. Note the exact position of each line for reassembly.⚠Use only a flare-nut wrench — open-end wrenches will round the soft fitting hex.
- 5Remove master cylinder mounting nutsSupport the master cylinder by hand. Remove the mounting nuts that secure the master cylinder to its bulkhead/pedal-box bracket. Note any spacers, washers, or brackets and their orientation.
- 6Remove the master cylinderCarefully draw the master cylinder away from the mounting studs. Be prepared for residual fluid to drip from the rear seal and ports. Wipe down the mounting surface and inspect the pedal-box studs and seal area for damage or corrosion.
- 7Transfer reservoir / prep new master cylinder (if applicable)If the new master cylinder is supplied without a reservoir, transfer the reservoir using new grommets/seals supplied in the kit. Bench-bleed the new master cylinder per the manufacturer-supplied bench bleed kit instructions before installation — this is essential to achieve a firm pedal.⚠Skipping the bench-bleed step is the most common cause of a soft/sinking pedal after master cylinder replacement.
- 8Install the new master cylinderPosition the new master cylinder onto the mounting studs, ensuring the pushrod engages correctly with the pedal linkage. Hand-thread the mounting nuts to seat the unit squarely without cross-threading.Torque specMaster Cylinder Nuts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 9Torque the master cylinder mounting nutsTorque the master cylinder mounting nuts evenly in a cross/alternating pattern to the manufacturer-specified value. ⚠️ Verify tightening sequence with the official Tesla Roadster Service Manual before final torque.Torque specMaster Cylinder Nuts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect hydraulic linesRemove plugs from the lines. Start each fitting BY HAND several turns to avoid cross-threading the soft fitting into the new master cylinder. Once all lines are hand-started, snug them, then torque to the manufacturer-specified value using a flare-nut/line wrench. ⚠️ Verify the correct primary/secondary circuit routing and tightening sequence with the service manual.Torque specBrake Line Fittings15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect electrical connectors and refill reservoirReconnect the fluid level sensor and any other electrical connectors. Fill the reservoir with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid from a sealed container to the MAX line. Install the reservoir cap hand-tight.
- 12Bleed the entire brake systemReconnect the 12V battery if needed for any electronic bleed function — otherwise keep disconnected. Bleed all four corners using a pressure or vacuum bleeder, or two-person pedal method. Standard sequence is furthest-from-master-cylinder first (typically RR, LR, RF, LF) — verify the correct sequence for the Roadster in the service manual. Continue until clean, bubble-free fluid flows from each bleeder and pedal feel is firm. Maintain reservoir level above MIN throughout.⚠Never let the reservoir run dry during bleeding — this introduces air into the new master cylinder and forces a re-bench-bleed.
Reassembly
- Top off reservoir to the MAX line with fresh DOT 3 fluid and install the reservoir cap hand-tight.
- Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery.
- Wipe down the master cylinder, reservoir, and surrounding area thoroughly with brake cleaner — residual brake fluid attracts dirt and damages finishes.
- Dispose of used brake fluid at an appropriate hazardous waste facility.
Verification
- With the vehicle off, pump the brake pedal several times — it should become firm and remain firm under sustained pressure with no slow sink.
- Inspect every fitting at the master cylinder and at all four calipers/bleeders for weeping after a 5-minute hold under firm pedal pressure.
- Start the vehicle (Ready) on level ground in a safe area and perform low-speed brake tests (5–10 mph) before any road use. Confirm straight, even braking with no pull.
- Recheck reservoir level after the first short drive and top off if needed.
- Verify no brake warning indicators are illuminated on the Roadster's instrument cluster (low fluid / brake system warning).
- Tesla recommends brake fluid replacement every 2 years regardless of mileage — log today's date as the new service baseline.
- Recheck all hydraulic fitting torque and inspect for leaks after the first 100 miles of driving.
