Replacement of the interior door pull/handle assembly on a 2012 Tesla Roadster. Note that the Roadster shares its door structure with the Lotus Elise/Exige platform, so most interior trim hardware is Lotus-sourced rather than Tesla-specific.

Warnings

The 2012 Roadster is a low-volume vehicle built on the Lotus Elise chassis. Interior trim parts are fragile fiberglass/composite and clips often break on removal — have replacements on hand.
The Roadster's 12V system is fed by the HV pack via a DC-DC converter. Disconnect the 12V (auxiliary) battery before working on any electrical components inside the door, even though the handle itself is mechanical.
ℹ️Service documentation for the Roadster is extremely limited. If your handle uses a different fastener configuration than described here, STOP and verify against Tesla Roadster Service Manual rather than forcing components.
⚠️DO NOT cut, pierce, or route tools near any orange high-voltage cabling. The Roadster's HV harness runs through the central tunnel — keep tools away from the rocker/sill area inside the cabin.

Tools required

Trim panel removal tool set (plastic pry tools)Essential
Phillips screwdriverEssential
Metric hex/Allen key setEssential
1/4" drive torque wrench (low range, 2-15 Nm)Essential
10mm low-voltage battery terminal wrench

Parts

  • Interior door handle / pull assembly (Lotus-platform compatible) × 1 — OEM-specified Roadster interior door handle — source through Tesla Roadster parts channel or verified Lotus Elise equivalent
  • Replacement trim clips × 1 — OEM-spec push-in trim clips — replace any broken on removal

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in neutral with parking brake firmly engaged (Roadster is manual-equivalent — no Park position).
  2. Exit the vehicle with the key fob moved at least 3 meters away. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage auxiliary battery. On the 2012 Roadster the 12V battery is located in the front trunk area — disconnect negative terminal first.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Open the door fully and support it if needed — Roadster doors are light but the hinges are not designed for sustained side-load.
  7. Lay down a soft cover over the sill and seat to prevent scratching the painted/composite surfaces during trim removal.
  8. Inspect the new handle assembly against the old one before starting to confirm correct fitment.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Identify handle mounting style
On the 2012 Roadster, the interior door pull is typically mounted to the door card or directly to the inner door structure with small machine screws, often hidden behind small trim caps or plugs. Visually inspect the handle perimeter for trim caps before applying any prying force.
  2. 2
    Remove trim caps / plugs
Using a plastic pry tool, gently lift any decorative caps or screw covers from the handle bezel. Set aside on a clean surface — these are easily lost and may not be available as service parts.
Do not use metal tools — the surrounding composite door panel is easily gouged and refinishing is difficult on Roadster interior trim.
  3. 3
    Remove handle retaining screws
Remove the screws securing the interior handle to the door structure or door card. Note the length and location of each screw — they may differ front-to-rear of the handle.

    Handle Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Lift handle away from door
Carefully lift the handle assembly away from the door. If the handle is connected to a release linkage (cable or rod) for the door latch, do not pull it free yet — slide it just far enough to expose the linkage attachment.
ℹ️If your handle is purely a grab pull with no latch function, there will be no linkage. If it is the combined pull/release, expect a Bowden cable or rod.
  5. 5
    Disconnect release linkage (if applicable)
If a release cable is present, rotate or slide the cable end out of its retainer on the handle, then unclip the cable housing from its bracket. Do not stretch or kink the cable. If a rigid rod is used instead, rotate the plastic clip and unhook the rod from the handle lever.
A damaged release cable will require door card removal to replace — handle the cable carefully.

  6. 6
    Inspect and clean mounting area
With the old handle removed, inspect the mounting bosses or threaded inserts in the door for damage. Clean any debris. Verify any captive nuts or threadserts are intact — stripped threads on the composite Roadster door require specialist repair.
  7. 7
Transfer or install release linkage to new handle
Connect the door release cable or rod to the new handle's lever in the same orientation it was removed. Verify the cable end is fully seated and the housing is locked into the bracket. Operate the lever by hand to confirm smooth actuation and full latch release travel.

  8. 8
Position new handle and start fasteners
Align the new handle to the door, ensuring no wires or cables are pinched behind it. Start all retaining screws by hand to avoid cross-threading the small fasteners into composite or thin-gauge metal.
  9. 9
    Torque handle screws
Tighten the handle screws evenly in a cross pattern to the specified value. These are small fasteners — overtightening will strip the threads or crack surrounding trim.
Use a low-range torque wrench. A standard 3/8" wrench will not register accurately at 3.0 Nm.

Reinstall trim caps and reconnect 12V
Press any decorative caps or screw covers back into place. Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery (positive first, then negative). Close all doors and allow the vehicle to wake.

Reassembly

  1. Confirm the door release operates smoothly from inside before closing the door.
  2. Test the door latch by closing the door gently from outside first — verify it latches fully on the first try.
  3. Replace any broken trim clips encountered during removal — do not reuse broken clips, as door trim rattles are difficult to chase down on the Roadster.
  4. If the door card was disturbed, ensure all weather sealing and any speaker grille trim is fully reseated.

Verification

  • Operate the interior handle from inside the vehicle — door should release with light effort and no binding.
  • Verify the handle has no wobble or play at its mounting points.
  • Confirm the door latches fully on first close from both inside and outside operation.
  • Check that no warning indicators appear on the VDS (Vehicle Display System) — the Roadster does not monitor door handle position electronically, but ajar sensing should clear with the door closed.
  • Drive at low speed with windows up and listen for any new rattles from the door card area — Roadster cabins are noisy enough that small rattles can be missed at speed.
  • Note: This job is not part of any Tesla scheduled maintenance interval. However, while the door card is accessible, it is a good time to inspect door hinge condition and weather seal — Roadster door seals harden with age and are a common source of wind noise.
