Replace the windshield washer fluid pump on a 2012 Tesla Roadster. The Roadster uses the Lotus Elise-derived chassis, so the washer reservoir and pump are accessed similarly to a Lotus Elise — typically from the front service compartment / wheel arch area.
Warnings
⚠The Roadster is built on the Lotus Elise platform with a bonded aluminum tub. Do not pry against or strike the aluminum chassis — it is easily damaged and expensive to repair.
⚠Service information for the 2012 Roadster is scarce. If the pump location or reservoir layout differs from what's described, STOP and verify against a Roadster-specific service document before forcing anything.
ℹ️Washer fluid will drain from the reservoir port when the pump is removed. Have a catch pan ready or drain the reservoir first.
⚠️Although this is a low-voltage job, the Roadster carries a large HV battery pack behind the cabin. Do not touch, cut, or pierce any orange cabling under any circumstance.
Tools required
Basic socket set (metric)Essential
Trim removal tool / plastic pryEssential
Drain pan or shop towels (washer fluid catch)Essential
Needle-nose pliers (for hose clamp, if fitted)
Safety glasses (washer fluid spray)
Parts
- Washer fluid pump (manufacturer-specified replacement for Roadster / Lotus Elise application) × 1 — OEM Roadster washer pump — cross-reference Lotus Elise washer pump as many chassis parts are shared
- Pump grommet/seal × 1 — Often supplied with pump; replace if torn
Fluids
- Windshield Washer Fluid — 3.5 qt
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place transmission in neutral or park (manual on early Roadster units — engage parking brake firmly and chock wheels).
- Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage auxiliary battery. On the 2012 Roadster the 12V battery is typically located in the front compartment — refer to the Roadster owner/service documentation for exact location.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Locate the washer fluid reservoir. On the Roadster (Lotus Elise-based chassis) this is typically accessed via the front service compartment or front wheel arch liner.
- If accessing through the wheel arch, turn the steering to provide clearance and remove the relevant fender liner fasteners.
Procedure
- 1Access the washer reservoir and pumpOpen the front compartment and/or remove the front wheel arch liner fasteners as required to expose the washer fluid reservoir. The pump is mounted low on the side of the reservoir, pressed into a rubber grommet.⚠Use a plastic trim tool on any clip-in panels — do not pry against the aluminum tub.
- 2Drain or position to catch washer fluidPlace a drain pan or absorbent towels directly beneath the pump. As soon as the pump is pulled from the grommet, fluid will flow out of the reservoir port. Optionally siphon the reservoir first to minimize spillage.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorUnplug the two-pin electrical connector from the washer pump. Depress the locking tab gently — connectors of this age can be brittle. Inspect for corrosion and clean if necessary.
- 4Disconnect washer hoseCarefully pull the washer fluid supply hose off the pump outlet. If a small spring clamp is fitted, squeeze and slide it back first. Inspect the hose end — trim back if cracked or hardened.
- 5Remove the pump from the reservoirGrasp the pump body and pull straight out of the rubber grommet with a slight twisting motion. Allow remaining fluid to drain into your catch pan. Inspect the grommet — if it is cracked, hardened, or torn, replace it.
- 6Install new pumpLubricate the new pump's inlet stub with a small amount of fresh washer fluid (do not use grease or oil — it can degrade the rubber). Press the new pump firmly into the grommet until fully seated.
- 7Reconnect hose and electrical connectorReattach the washer hose to the pump outlet and reseat the spring clamp if used. Reconnect the electrical connector until the locking tab clicks.
- 8Refill washer reservoirTop up the washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid. Capacity is approximately 3.5 quarts but only refill to the amount lost plus any prior level.
Reassembly
- Reinstall any fender liner fasteners or front compartment trim removed for access.
- Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. Torque battery terminal bolts to specification — do not overtighten.
- Close the front compartment and verify it latches fully.
Verification
- With the 12V reconnected and the vehicle powered on, activate the windshield washers and confirm strong, even spray from both nozzles.
- Activate the washers for several cycles and inspect under the reservoir and around the pump grommet for any leaks.
- Check that fluid level remains stable after operation — a slow drop with no visible leak can indicate an internal pump seal issue or grommet weep.
- Confirm no warning indicators (low washer fluid, etc.) remain illuminated on the instrument cluster.
