  6. Lift front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands at manufacturer jacking points
  7. Remove front wheels for access to brakes and suspension
  8. Remove engine splash shields to access drain plugs

Procedure

  1. 1
Drain engine oil and remove oil filter
Position drain pan under oil drain plug on bottom of oil pan. Remove drain plug and allow oil to drain completely (approximately 10 minutes). While draining, remove oil filter from passenger side of engine block using filter wrench if necessary. Inspect drain plug threads and oil pan threads for damage. Install new crush washer on drain plug and reinstall drain plug.
  2. 2
Install new oil filter and refill engine oil
Apply thin film of clean engine oil to new oil filter gasket. Install new oil filter hand-tight plus 3/4 turn. Remove engine oil fill cap on top of engine. Pour in 4.5 quarts of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 oil using funnel. Replace oil fill cap. Start engine and verify oil pressure light extinguishes. Check for leaks at filter and drain plug. Shut off engine and wait 5 minutes, then verify oil level on dipstick is between MIN and MAX marks.
  3. 3
    Replace engine air filter
Open hood and locate air filter box on driver side of engine bay. Release air box clips securing top cover. Lift cover and remove old air filter element. Clean any debris from inside air box using clean cloth. Install new air filter ensuring proper orientation with rubber seal seated correctly. Replace cover and secure clips.
  4. 4
    Replace cabin air filter
Open glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stoppers and lower fully. Remove cabin filter cover by releasing tabs. Slide out old cabin filter noting airflow direction arrow. Install new cabin filter with airflow arrow pointing in same direction (toward rear of vehicle). Replace cover and return glove box to normal position.
  5. 5
    Remove and inspect spark plugs
Remove plastic engine cover if equipped by pulling up on cover. Disconnect ignition coil connectors on all four cylinders. Remove mounting bolts securing each ignition coil. Pull coils straight up and out. Use compressed air to clean debris from spark plug wells. Remove spark plugs using 16mm spark plug socket. Inspect old plugs for wear, unusual deposits, or damage which may indicate engine issues.
Keep track of which cylinder each old spark plug came from for diagnosis if needed. Note any oil in spark plug wells which indicates valve cover gasket leakage.
  6. 6
    Install new spark plugs
Verify new spark plugs are gapped to 0.043 inches (1.1mm) using gap tool. Apply small amount of anti-seize compound to plug threads (avoid getting on electrode). Thread each plug by hand into cylinder head to avoid cross-threading. Tighten spark plugs to specification (approximately 18 Nm/13 lb-ft - hand tighten then 1/4 turn with socket). Reinstall ignition coils and secure with mounting bolts. Reconnect all coil connectors. Reinstall engine cover if equipped.
  7. 7
    Drain engine coolant
Locate radiator drain plug (petcock) at bottom driver side of radiator. Place drain container under radiator. Slowly open drain plug and allow coolant to drain. Remove radiator cap slowly to improve drainage. Locate engine block drain plug on rear of engine block and remove to drain block coolant. Inspect drain plug O-rings and replace if damaged. After complete drainage, reinstall block drain plug and radiator drain plug.
⚠️Verify engine is completely cold before opening cooling system. Check radiator cap temperature by touch before loosening.
  8. 8
    Flush and refill cooling system
Connect garden hose to radiator fill neck using flush adapter if available. Run water through system with drain open until water runs clear. Close all drain plugs. Mix 50/50 blend of Toyota Super Long Life Pink coolant with distilled water. Fill radiator slowly to minimize air pockets. Fill coolant reservoir to MAX line. Start engine with radiator cap off and run until thermostat opens (radiator hoses become hot). Add coolant as level drops. Install radiator cap. Run engine to operating temperature and verify proper operation. Recheck coolant level after vehicle cools.
  9. 9
Drain and refill automatic transmission fluid
Locate transmission drain plug on bottom of transmission pan. Position drain container underneath. Remove drain plug and allow ATF to drain completely (approximately 4 quarts will drain). Inspect drain plug magnet for excessive metal particles. Clean plug and reinstall. Locate transmission fill plug on passenger side of transmission (may require removing splash shield for access). Using fluid pump, add 4 quarts of fresh Toyota WS ATF through fill hole. Reinstall fill plug. Start engine and cycle through all gear positions, pausing 5 seconds in each. Check fluid level per Toyota procedure (engine running, fluid at operating temperature).
Only use genuine Toyota WS ATF. This transmission is extremely sensitive to incorrect fluid and will suffer premature failure with wrong ATF type.
  10. 10
    Flush brake fluid
Locate brake fluid reservoir under hood and remove cap. Verify fluid is not below MIN line. Starting with right rear wheel, attach brake bleeder hose to bleeder screw. Have assistant pump brake pedal 3 times and hold. Open bleeder screw and allow old fluid to drain into container. Close bleeder before pedal reaches floor. Repeat until fluid runs clear. Refill master cylinder reservoir as needed to prevent air entry. Repeat process on left rear, right front, then left front wheel. Top off reservoir to MAX line with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid.
Never reuse brake fluid. Never let master cylinder run dry during bleeding or air will enter ABS system.
  11. 11
    Inspect brakes and suspension
With wheels removed, inspect front brake pads for remaining thickness (replace if less than 3mm). Check brake rotors for scoring, cracks, or excessive wear. Inspect all brake hoses for cracks, bulging, or fluid leakage. Check front ball joints for play by prying between control arm and spindle. Inspect tie rod ends for looseness. Check CV boot condition for tears or grease leakage. Examine strut mounts and springs for damage. Inspect all suspension bushings for cracking or deterioration. Document any components requiring future replacement.
  12. 12
    Reinstall wheels and lower vehicle
Clean wheel mounting surfaces on hubs. Install wheels and thread lug nuts by hand. Using torque wrench, tighten lug nuts in star pattern to specification. Reinstall engine splash shields. Lower vehicle from jack stands. With vehicle weight on ground, re-torque lug nuts in star pattern to final specification.
  13. 13
Reset maintenance reminder and test drive
Turn ignition to ON position (engine off). Ensure odometer reading is displayed. Press and hold trip reset button while turning ignition off then back to ON. Continue holding until maintenance light begins flashing then turns off (approximately 10 seconds). Release button and verify light is reset. Start engine and verify no warning lights remain illuminated. Test drive vehicle for at least 10 minutes, verifying normal operation of engine, transmission, and brakes. Monitor temperature gauge for normal operation.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all drain plugs and fill caps are properly installed and torqued
  2. Confirm no tools or parts were left in engine bay
  3. Check ground around vehicle for fluid leaks or spills
  4. Dispose of used oil, coolant, and brake fluid at appropriate recycling facility
  5. Reset tire pressures to specification on door jamb placard (typically 32 PSI front and rear)
  6. Update vehicle maintenance records with date, mileage, and services performed

Verification

  • Start engine and verify smooth idle with no unusual noises or vibrations
  • Confirm no warning lights on instrument cluster remain illuminated
  • Check under vehicle for any fluid leaks from drain plugs, filters, or connections
  • Verify oil level on dipstick is between MIN and MAX marks with engine off
