  • Oil drain plug crush washer × 1 — 90430-12031
  • Engine air filter × 1 — 17801-0T030 or equivalent
  • Cabin air filter × 1 — 87139-02090 or equivalent

Fluids

  • Toyota Genuine 0W-20 engine oil — 4.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Run engine to operating temperature, then shut off and wait 10 minutes for oil to settle
  4. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and secure on jack stands at manufacturer jacking points
  5. Remove front engine under cover if equipped (plastic shield beneath engine)
  6. Gather all required parts, fluids, and tools before beginning

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain engine oil
Position drain pan beneath oil drain plug on bottom of oil pan. Using appropriate socket, loosen and remove oil drain plug. Allow oil to drain completely (approximately 10 minutes). Inspect drain plug threads and oil pan threads for damage. Remove and discard old crush washer from drain plug.
  2. 2
Install drain plug with new washer
Install new crush washer onto oil drain plug. Once oil has completely drained, clean drain plug threads and oil pan sealing surface with shop rag. Thread drain plug by hand to ensure proper engagement, then tighten to specification using torque wrench.
  3. 3
    Remove oil filter
Reposition drain pan beneath oil filter (located on driver side of engine block). Using oil filter wrench, loosen and remove oil filter by turning counterclockwise. Expect residual oil spillage. Clean oil filter mounting surface on engine block with shop rag, ensuring no old gasket material remains.
  4. 4
    Install new oil filter
Apply thin film of clean engine oil to rubber gasket on new oil filter. Thread new filter onto mounting boss by hand, turning clockwise. Once gasket contacts mounting surface, tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand only. Do not use filter wrench for installation.
  5. 5
    Replace engine air filter
Open hood and locate air filter housing on driver side of engine compartment. Release air box clips and lift cover. Remove old engine air filter element. Clean interior of air box housing with shop rag or vacuum to remove debris. Install new air filter ensuring proper orientation and seating. Close cover and secure clips to specification.
  6. 6
    Replace cabin air filter
Open glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stoppers and lower fully. Remove cabin air filter cover (located behind glove box). Slide out old cabin air filter, noting airflow direction arrow. Vacuum filter housing if debris present. Install new cabin air filter with airflow arrow pointing toward back of vehicle. Reinstall cover and glove box.
  7. 7
    Fill engine with oil
Remove oil filler cap on top of engine (marked with oil can symbol). Using funnel, add 4 quarts of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 engine oil. Add remaining 0.5 quarts slowly while monitoring level. Install oil filler cap. Start engine and let idle for 2 minutes, monitoring for leaks at drain plug and filter. Shut off engine and wait 5 minutes.
  8. 8
Check oil level and inspect for leaks
Remove dipstick (yellow handle near front of engine), wipe clean, reinsert fully, then remove to check level. Oil should be between MIN and MAX marks. Add oil in small increments if needed. Inspect oil drain plug and filter for any signs of leakage. Wipe clean with rag and monitor.
  9. 9
    Inspect fluid levels
Check engine coolant level in overflow reservoir (should be between LOW and FULL marks when cold). Check brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir (should be between MIN and MAX). Check windshield washer fluid and top off if needed. For vehicles with automatic transmission, check ATF level with engine running and transmission at operating temperature using dipstick (should be in HOT range).
  10. 10
    Inspect belts, hoses, and battery
Visually inspect serpentine belt for cracks, glazing, or fraying. Check all accessible coolant hoses for cracks, bulging, or soft spots. Inspect battery terminals for corrosion and ensure connections are tight. Check battery hold-down is secure.
  11. 11
    Inspect tires and set pressures
Inspect all four tires for abnormal wear patterns, cuts, bulges, or objects embedded in tread. Check tread depth (minimum 2/32 inch). Using tire pressure gauge, check and adjust all tire pressures to specification listed on driver door jamb placard (typically 32 PSI front and rear when cold). Do not forget spare tire.
  12. 12
    Inspect brakes and suspension
With vehicle still raised, inspect brake pad thickness through wheel spokes (minimum 3mm). Check brake rotors for scoring or excessive rust. Inspect all visible suspension components for damage, leakage, or excessive wear. Check CV boot condition for tears or grease leakage.
  13. 13
Reinstall under cover and lower vehicle
If engine under cover was removed, reinstall and secure with appropriate fasteners. Carefully lower vehicle from jack stands using floor jack. Remove jack stands and lower vehicle completely to ground. Remove wheel chocks.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all fluid filler caps are properly installed and tightened
  2. Confirm glove box is properly reinstalled with stoppers engaged
  3. Verify air filter housing cover is fully latched
  4. Double-check no tools or rags were left in engine compartment
  5. Reset maintenance reminder light using trip meter reset button procedure or scan tool if equipped

Verification

  • Start engine and verify oil pressure warning light extinguishes within 2-3 seconds
  • Let engine idle for 5 minutes and inspect ground beneath vehicle for any fluid leaks
  • Verify oil level on dipstick is within proper range after warm-up
  • Test drive vehicle 5-10 miles and recheck all fluid levels and inspect for leaks
  • Confirm no warning lights are illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Document service date and mileage for maintenance records
