This procedure covers the replacement of the front strut air spring (dust boot/bump stop assembly) on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L engine.

Warnings

⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
Do not disconnect the strut top mount completely or remove the center nut without a spring compressor. This procedure only requires partial disassembly.
If steering knuckle bolts are seized, apply penetrating oil and allow to soak. Excessive force can strip threads or damage components.

Parts

  • Front strut dust boot and bump stop assembly × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground, but do not remove
  3. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and support securely on jack stands under frame rails
  4. Remove front wheels completely
  5. Spray penetrating oil on strut-to-knuckle bolts if vehicle has significant rust or corrosion

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access strut tower mounting area
Open the hood and locate the strut tower in the engine compartment. Remove any plastic covers or cowl panels that obstruct access to the upper strut mount nuts. On this model, you may need to remove windshield wiper cowl trim for better access.
  2. 2
    Disconnect sway bar link
Locate the sway bar link connection at the strut assembly. Hold the ball joint shaft with an Allen key to prevent rotation. Using a 14mm socket, remove the upper sway bar link nut. Separate the link from the strut and secure out of the way with wire or zip tie.
    Torque spec
    Sway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Remove strut-to-knuckle bolts
Locate the two bolts connecting the strut to the steering knuckle at the bottom of the strut assembly. These are large 19mm bolts. Support the knuckle assembly with one hand or a jack. Remove both strut-to-knuckle bolts completely and note the alignment marks if present. Pull the knuckle away from the strut slightly to create clearance.
Support the knuckle assembly before removing the second bolt to prevent sudden dropping which could damage brake lines or CV axle.
    Torque spec
    Strut Bolts109 Nm (81 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Loosen upper strut tower nuts
From inside the engine compartment, locate the three 14mm nuts securing the strut mount to the strut tower. Do NOT remove the center nut (strut shaft nut). Loosen only the three outer mounting nuts but leave them threaded on a few turns to maintain position. This allows the strut to drop slightly while remaining controlled.
⚠️The center strut shaft nut must never be removed without a spring compressor installed. Removing it can cause the spring to violently decompress causing serious injury.
    Torque spec
    Strut Tower Nuts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Lower and remove strut assembly
With the knuckle separated and upper nuts loosened, carefully guide the strut assembly downward and outward from the wheel well. You may need to angle it to clear the fender and suspension components. Once clear of the strut tower, remove the three upper nuts completely and remove the strut assembly from the vehicle. Place on a clean workbench.
  6. 6
Remove old dust boot and bump stop
With the strut assembly on the bench, locate the dust boot (rubber accordion-style cover) and bump stop assembly on the strut shaft. Carefully slide or pull the old dust boot down and off the strut shaft. Remove the bump stop cushion from the shaft. Clean the strut shaft with a wire brush and inspect for damage, scoring, or oil leakage. If the shaft is damaged or leaking, the entire strut requires replacement.
ℹ️If strut is leaking oil or the shaft is pitted or scored, replace the complete strut assembly rather than just the dust boot.
  7. 7
Install new bump stop and dust boot
Slide the new bump stop onto the strut shaft, orienting it correctly with the wider end facing up toward the mount. Install the new dust boot by sliding it onto the strut shaft from the bottom, ensuring it seats properly in the groove on the strut body. The boot should accordion naturally and not be stretched or compressed excessively.
  8. 8
    Reinstall strut assembly to vehicle
Lift the strut assembly back into the wheel well, guiding the three upper mount studs through the holes in the strut tower. Install the three upper mounting nuts and tighten by hand initially. Align the strut with the steering knuckle bolt holes, ensuring any alignment marks match original position.
  9. 9
    Torque upper strut tower nuts
Using a torque wrench, tighten the three upper strut tower mounting nuts to specification. Work in a star pattern to ensure even loading of the mount.
    Torque spec
    Strut Tower Nuts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect strut to steering knuckle
Align the steering knuckle with the strut bracket and insert both strut-to-knuckle bolts. Install nuts and tighten hand-tight first. Ensure the knuckle is fully seated against the strut bracket before final torque. Torque both bolts to specification.
    Torque spec
    Strut Bolts109 Nm (81 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect sway bar link
Guide the sway bar link ball stud back into the connection point on the strut assembly. Install the nut and hold the ball stud shaft with an Allen key while tightening. Torque the nut to specification.
    Torque spec
    Sway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reinstall wheels and lower vehicle
Install the front wheels and thread lug nuts on by hand. Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern with a wrench but do not torque yet. Lower the vehicle until tires just contact the ground but vehicle weight is still on jack stands. Torque lug nuts to specification in star pattern. Fully lower vehicle and remove jack stands.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts129 Nm (95 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall any cowl panels or plastic covers removed during disassembly
  2. Repeat entire procedure for opposite side if replacing both front strut air springs

Verification

  • Start vehicle and turn steering wheel full lock in both directions while stationary to verify no binding or interference
  • Test drive vehicle at low speed and verify normal suspension operation with no clunking or rattling noises
  • Visually inspect dust boot installation after test drive to ensure proper seating and no displacement
  • Check for any fluid leakage around strut shaft indicating damaged seal
