This procedure removes and replaces the driver's side airbag module on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla, including proper battery disconnect, airbag system disarm, and system verification.

Warnings

⚠️AIRBAG SYSTEM: Improper handling can cause accidental deployment resulting in serious injury or death. Follow all procedures exactly as written.
⚠️Battery must be disconnected and you must wait MINIMUM 2 minutes before touching any airbag components to allow capacitor discharge.
⚠️Never use electrical test equipment on airbag circuits. Never strike or jar the airbag module.
⚠️Always place removed airbag module face-up on a clean, flat surface away from people. Never place face-down.
Incorrect torque on airbag module bolts can cause deployment failure or accidental deployment. Use calibrated torque wrench.
If airbag has deployed or shows any damage, vehicle should be towed to professional service. Do not attempt repair.
ℹ️Turn ignition OFF and remove key before starting. Ensure no one else has access to the vehicle during this procedure.
ℹ️Wear long sleeves to avoid skin contact with airbag propellant residue if present.

Parts

  • Driver airbag module × 1 — Use OEM Toyota part number specific to vehicle trim

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key completely from vehicle
  3. Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position
  4. Ensure airbag warning light is not illuminated (indicating pre-existing fault). If lit, resolve fault before proceeding
  5. Open hood and locate battery in engine compartment
  6. Take photo of steering wheel position and column for reference during reassembly

Procedure

  1. 1
Disconnect battery and wait for capacitor discharge
Using 10mm wrench, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt and disconnect the negative cable. Secure cable away from battery terminal so it cannot make contact. Set a timer for MINIMUM 2 minutes and do not proceed until time has elapsed. This allows the airbag system backup capacitor to fully discharge.
  2. 2
    Wait for capacitor discharge period
Wait the full 2 minutes after battery disconnect. Do not touch steering wheel or any airbag components during this time. Use this time to prepare tools and new airbag module. Verify new airbag module part number matches vehicle application and trim level.
  3. 3
Access airbag mounting bolts on steering wheel rear
From the rear of the steering wheel (behind the wheel facing the driver seat), locate two access holes on either side of the steering column. These holes provide access to the Torx airbag module mounting bolts. On some trim levels, you may need to carefully pry small plastic covers from these access holes using a trim tool.
  4. 4
    Remove airbag module mounting bolts
Insert Torx T30 driver through each access hole and locate the airbag module mounting bolt. There are two bolts total (left and right side). Carefully unscrew both bolts counterclockwise and remove completely. Keep bolts in a safe location - they will be reused unless visibly damaged. Support the airbag module with your other hand as you remove the second bolt.

  5. 5
Carefully pull airbag module away from steering wheel
Gently pull the airbag module straight toward you, away from the steering wheel hub. Pull only 3-4 inches to expose the electrical connectors on the back of the module. Do not pull hard or yank on the module. Support the weight of the module with both hands during this process.
  6. 6
    Disconnect airbag electrical connectors
Locate the yellow airbag connector (some models have two connectors) on the back of the airbag module. Press the locking tab and carefully pull the connector straight out from the module. If equipped with a horn connector (separate from airbag), disconnect it as well by pressing its release tab. Note the routing and orientation of connectors for reinstallation.
  7. 7
    Remove old airbag module
With connectors disconnected, carefully remove the airbag module completely from the steering wheel. Immediately place it face-UP (Toyota logo facing up) on a clean, flat surface at least 10 feet away from the work area. Never place airbag module face-down. Keep away from heat sources and people.
  8. 8
    Inspect steering wheel and connectors
Inspect the steering wheel mounting points for any damage, cracks, or stripped threads. Inspect the yellow airbag connector(s) and horn connector for any corrosion, damage, or bent pins. Clean any dust or debris from the steering wheel hub area using a dry cloth. Do not use compressed air.
  9. 9
    Prepare new airbag module
Remove new airbag module from packaging carefully. Inspect for any shipping damage. Verify part number matches vehicle application. Keep airbag face-UP at all times. Do not remove any protective covers or tapes from the connector side until ready to install.
  10. 10
Connect electrical connectors to new airbag module
Position new airbag module near steering wheel with connectors accessible. Connect the yellow airbag connector(s) first by aligning and pushing firmly until you hear/feel a distinct click. Gently tug to verify locked connection. If equipped, connect horn connector in same manner. Ensure no wires are pinched or twisted.
  11. 11
Position new airbag module on steering wheel
Carefully guide the airbag module onto the steering wheel hub, ensuring all wiring is properly routed behind the module and not pinched. Align the two mounting holes in the module with the mounting points on the steering wheel. The module should sit flush against the steering wheel with no gaps.
  12. 12
Install and torque airbag mounting bolts
Thread both Torx airbag mounting bolts by hand through the access holes from the rear of the steering wheel. Start both bolts before tightening either one. Using Torx T30 bit and calibrated torque wrench, tighten each bolt in alternating fashion to exactly 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft). This torque is CRITICAL for proper airbag function. Do not overtighten.

  13. 13
    Verify airbag module installation
Verify airbag module sits flush and secure against steering wheel with no movement or gaps. Verify both mounting bolts are properly torqued. Verify no wires are visible or pinched around edges of module. Replace any access hole covers that were removed earlier.
  14. 14
    Reconnect battery
Return to engine compartment. Reconnect negative battery cable to negative battery terminal. Tighten terminal bolt securely with 10mm wrench. Ensure connection is clean and tight. Do not start engine yet.
  15. 15
    Verify airbag system operation
Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Observe the airbag warning light on instrument cluster. Light should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds, then turn OFF. If light stays on, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, there is a system fault - turn off ignition immediately and recheck all connections. If light functions correctly, system is operational.

Reassembly

  1. No disassembly of other components required for this procedure
  2. Ensure all access hole covers on steering wheel are reinstalled if removed
  3. Close hood and ensure battery terminal connection is secure

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON (engine off) and verify airbag warning light illuminates briefly then turns OFF after approximately 6 seconds
  • Test horn operation by pressing center of steering wheel to verify horn connector is properly seated
  • Gently press around perimeter of airbag module to verify it is flush and secure with no movement
  • Start engine and verify airbag light remains OFF during operation
  • If equipped with OBD-II scan tool, check for airbag diagnostic trouble codes - there should be none present
  • Take short test drive and verify no airbag warning light illumination during normal driving
  • If airbag light illuminates at any point, stop vehicle safely and have system professionally diagnosed immediately
