This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the airbag control module (ACM) located under the center console, including proper system disarming and reprogramming requirements.

Warnings

⚠️The airbag system is SAFETY-CRITICAL. Improper service can result in airbag deployment causing serious injury or death, or failure to deploy in a crash.
⚠️Wait a MINIMUM of 90 seconds after disconnecting the battery before working on any airbag components. The backup capacitor must fully discharge.
⚠️The replacement airbag module MUST be programmed to the vehicle VIN using Toyota Techstream or equivalent professional diagnostic equipment. An unprogrammed module will not function.
Airbag connectors use gold-plated terminals. Do not touch connector pins with bare hands as oils can cause connection issues.
Store the airbag module with the connector facing UP on a clean surface, never on metal or conductive materials.
If the vehicle has been in a collision severe enough to deploy airbags or set crash codes, additional inspection and parts replacement may be required. Consult a professional.
ℹ️After module replacement, all airbag system DTCs must be cleared and the system must pass a complete functional test before returning vehicle to service.

Parts

  • Airbag control module (ACM) × 1 — 89170-02xxx (must match vehicle VIN and be programmed)
  • Center console clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key (or disable push-button start)
  3. Ensure all doors are closed and no one is inside the vehicle during service
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post
  5. Wait a MINIMUM of 90 seconds for airbag backup power to discharge completely
  6. Place front seats in their most forward position for access to rear console mounting
  7. Ensure you have the correct replacement module that matches your vehicle VIN
  8. Have diagnostic scanner ready for post-installation programming and verification

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove center console trim panels
Using plastic trim tools, carefully pry up the front cup holder trim panel and disconnect any electrical connectors for power outlets or USB ports. Remove the shift knob boot trim by lifting upward. Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.
  2. 2
    Remove center console mounting screws
Locate and remove the console mounting screws. There are typically two screws at the front under the cup holder area and two screws at the rear accessible from the back seat footwell area. Use a 10mm socket to remove all console mounting screws.
  3. 3
    Lift and disconnect center console
Carefully lift the center console upward and rearward. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors for the shifter illumination, power outlets, or heated seat switches if equipped. Fully remove the console and set aside on a protected surface.
  4. 4
    Locate airbag control module
The airbag control module is mounted on the floor tunnel beneath where the center console was located. It is a rectangular metal box approximately 4x6 inches with a large yellow multi-pin connector. Note the module orientation and connector routing before removal.
  5. 5
    Disconnect airbag module connector
Locate the orange or yellow connector lock on the main airbag module harness connector. Slide or lift the connector lock to the unlocked position. Firmly grasp the connector body (NOT the wires) and pull straight out to disconnect. Do not touch the gold pins inside the connector.
Never pull on wires to disconnect connectors. Always grasp the connector body to prevent wire damage.
  6. 6
    Remove module mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the module mounting bolts securing the airbag control module to the floor tunnel. There are typically two or three bolts. Keep track of any ground straps or brackets attached to these bolts.

  7. 7
    Remove airbag control module
Carefully lift the airbag control module away from the mounting surface. Inspect the mounting area for any corrosion, damage, or water intrusion. Clean the mounting surface if needed. Set the old module aside with connector facing up on a non-conductive surface.
  8. 8
    Install new airbag control module
Position the new airbag control module in the mounting location, ensuring correct orientation. The connector should face the same direction as the original. Verify any ground straps are properly positioned under mounting bolt locations.
  9. 9
    Install module mounting bolts
Install the module mounting bolts and tighten to proper specification using a torque wrench. Ensure ground straps (if present) have clean metal-to-metal contact. Do not overtighten as this can damage the module mounting points.
Proper ground connections are critical for airbag system function. Ensure mounting surfaces are clean and ground straps are secure.

  10. 10
    Reconnect airbag module connector
Carefully align the main harness connector with the module connector, ensuring proper orientation. Push firmly until fully seated and you hear/feel a click. Slide the connector lock back to the locked position to secure the connection.
  11. 11
    Reconnect battery and initialize system
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Ensure no one is in the vehicle. Turn the ignition to ON (do not start engine). The airbag warning light should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds then turn off if the system is functioning properly.
⚠️Ensure no one is inside the vehicle when reconnecting battery and powering up the airbag system for the first time.

  12. 12
    Program airbag module
Connect the Toyota Techstream diagnostic scanner to the OBD-II port. Navigate to the airbag system menu and perform module programming/initialization procedure. This will write the vehicle VIN to the new module and calibrate the system. Follow all on-screen prompts. This step is MANDATORY and cannot be skipped.
⚠️The airbag module MUST be programmed using professional diagnostic equipment. The system will not function correctly without proper programming.
  13. 13
    Clear diagnostic trouble codes
Using the diagnostic scanner, clear all airbag system DTCs. Turn ignition off, wait 10 seconds, then turn ignition back on. Verify no new codes are present and the airbag warning light operates normally (illuminates briefly then turns off).

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall center console in reverse order of removal, ensuring all electrical connectors are properly seated
  2. Install console mounting screws and torque to specification if applicable
  3. Verify all trim panels and clips are fully seated and secure
  4. Return front seats to normal position
  5. Test all console functions (power outlets, heated seats if equipped) to verify connections

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify airbag warning light illuminates for 6 seconds then turns off completely
  • Use diagnostic scanner to verify zero airbag system DTCs are present
  • Perform a complete system test using the diagnostic scanner's airbag system test function
  • Verify the module serial number and VIN programming in the scanner matches the vehicle
  • Test drive vehicle and confirm airbag warning light does not illuminate during normal operation
  • Document the repair with module serial number, date, and verification test results
  • If airbag light remains on or any DTCs are present, DO NOT return vehicle to service - seek professional assistance
