Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts on the side being serviced while vehicle is on ground
- Loosen (but do not remove) the axle nut while vehicle is on ground with someone applying brakes or vehicle in gear
- Raise and support vehicle securely on jack stands at manufacturer lift points
- Remove wheel completely
- Place drain pan under transaxle area to catch fluid spillage
Procedure
- 1Remove axle nut and separate axle from hubWith the vehicle raised and wheel removed, completely remove the previously loosened axle nut. Remove the cotter pin or unstake the nut collar first. Pull the hub assembly outward slightly to disengage the axle splines from the wheel hub. The axle shaft should now have slight lateral movement.
- 2Remove axle from transmissionPosition drain pan directly under the axle seal area at the transmission. Using a pry bar positioned between the transmission case and the inner CV joint housing, carefully pry the axle shaft straight out of the transmission. Apply steady, even pressure to pop the circlip free from the differential side gear. Once released, pull the axle completely out of the vehicle. Allow transmission fluid to drain into the pan.⚠Do not pry against the axle seal or transmission housing sealing surfaces; use only the CV joint housing as the pry pointℹ️Expect 1-2 quarts of transmission fluid to drain when axle is removed
- 3Remove old axle sealWith the axle removed, inspect the seal bore in the transmission. Using a seal puller or small pry bar, carefully extract the old axle seal from the transmission case. Work around the perimeter of the seal to avoid damaging the bore. Note the installation depth and orientation of the old seal before complete removal.⚠Do not score or gouge the seal bore surface in the transmission case; damage will cause new seal to leak
- 4Clean and inspect seal boreThoroughly clean the seal bore in the transmission using shop towels and cleaning solvent. Remove all old seal material, debris, and residue. Use a wire brush if necessary, being careful not to damage the machined surface. Inspect the bore for scoring, grooves, or damage that could prevent proper seal seating. Dry the bore completely.
- 5Inspect axle shaft seal surfaceClean and inspect the axle shaft sealing surface (the area that rides against the seal lip). Check for grooves, pitting, or roughness that could damage the new seal. Minor imperfections can be smoothed with fine emery cloth. If the shaft is severely damaged, axle replacement is necessary.
- 6Install new axle sealLightly coat the outer diameter of the new seal with transmission fluid. Apply a thin layer of grease to the seal lip. Position the seal squarely in the bore with the lip facing inward toward the transmission. Using a seal driver or appropriate-size socket that contacts only the outer edge of the seal, tap the seal evenly into place until it seats at the proper depth (flush with or slightly below the bore edge, matching original position).⚠Drive the seal in evenly; cocking the seal will damage it and cause immediate leakageℹ️Use a seal driver that matches the seal outer diameter; do not drive on the seal face or lip
- 7Reinstall axle shaftCoat the axle splines and seal contact area with fresh transmission fluid. Verify the axle circlip is properly installed and in good condition. Align the axle with the differential side gear and push firmly until the circlip engages with an audible click. Tug outward on the axle to confirm the circlip is seated and the axle will not pull out.ℹ️The axle must click into place; if it does not, the circlip may be damaged or missing
- 8Reinstall axle into wheel hubGuide the outer end of the axle shaft through the wheel hub assembly, ensuring the splines engage properly. Push the hub assembly inward onto the axle shaft until the splines are fully engaged and the hub sits flush against the axle shoulder.
- 9Install and torque axle nutThread the new axle nut onto the axle shaft by hand. With the vehicle still raised and the parking brake applied (or brakes held), torque the axle nut to specification. - 11Refill transmission fluidLocate the transmission fill plug (typically on the side of the transaxle case). With the vehicle level, add Toyota WS ATF through the fill hole until fluid begins to drip from the hole. The transmission should be at operating temperature for accurate fill level. Reinstall the fill plug and check for leaks around the new seal.ℹ️Transmission fluid level must be checked with vehicle on level ground and transmission at operating temperature (160-180°F)
Reassembly
- Torque all fasteners to specification in the order listed
- Ensure the axle nut is properly staked or cotter pin is installed and bent to prevent loosening
- Double-check that the wheel lug nuts are torqued in a star pattern
Verification
- Start the engine and shift through all gear positions, allowing the transmission to circulate fluid
- With the engine running, recheck the transmission fluid level and top off if necessary
- Inspect the new axle seal area for any signs of leakage immediately after installation
- Test drive the vehicle and listen for any unusual noises from the axle or transmission area
- After test drive, recheck fluid level and inspect seal area again for leaks
- Verify the axle nut is still tight and properly secured with cotter pin or staking
