This procedure covers the replacement or installation of a backup camera on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla, including removal of the trunk trim panel, camera installation, and wiring connection to the head unit.

Warnings

Disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on any electrical components to prevent short circuits and airbag deployment
ℹ️If your vehicle is equipped with Display Audio Plus or Entune systems, camera calibration may be required after installation
Handle trunk trim panels carefully to avoid breaking mounting clips

Tools required

Panel removal tool set (trim pry tools)Essential
10mm socket and ratchetEssential
Torque wrench (5-15 Nm range)Essential
Electrical tape
Wire stripper/crimper (if splicing into factory harness)
Multimeter
Flashlight or work lightEssential

Parts

  • Backup camera assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent with Toyota harness adapter
  • Camera wiring harness (if not included with camera) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Trim panel clips (replacement for damaged clips) × 5 — Toyota 90467-10188 or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes before proceeding
  3. Open trunk and remove any items that may obstruct access to trunk lid trim panel
  4. Verify replacement camera is compatible with your specific Corolla model year and trim level
  5. If installing aftermarket camera, confirm wiring harness adapter matches your head unit connector type

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove trunk lid interior trim panel
Open the trunk fully. Using trim removal tools, carefully pry off the trunk lid interior trim panel starting from the edges. There are approximately 8-10 plastic clips securing the panel. Work slowly around the perimeter to avoid breaking clips. Once clips are released, disconnect any electrical connectors for trunk lighting if equipped, then remove the panel completely.
  2. 2
    Locate factory camera mounting location
Identify the factory camera mounting location on the trunk lid exterior, centered above the license plate area. On models without factory cameras, there should be a circular indentation or guide mark. On models with existing cameras, remove the existing camera by pressing the retaining tab and rotating counterclockwise approximately 30 degrees, then pulling outward. Disconnect the wiring connector from the old camera.
  3. 3
    Install new backup camera
Insert the new backup camera into the mounting hole from the exterior of the trunk lid. Align the camera so it is level and the lens faces rearward. From the interior side, rotate the camera clockwise approximately 30 degrees until it locks into place with an audible click. Verify the camera is secure and properly oriented. Some aftermarket cameras may use a different mounting method with a grommet and retaining nut.
  4. 4
Route camera wiring through trunk lid
Route the camera wiring harness from the camera mounting location through the trunk lid, following existing wire channels or factory harness routing. Feed the wiring through the rubber grommet or conduit that passes from the trunk lid into the main trunk area. Ensure wiring has adequate slack to allow trunk lid to open and close without tension on the wires.
  5. 5
Route wiring to head unit location
Route the camera harness from the trunk area through the passenger side interior. Remove the rear seat cushion by pulling up firmly on the front edge. Remove the rear seat back by locating and removing the two lower mounting bolts, then lifting up and forward. Route wiring along the passenger side rocker panel, tucking it under existing carpet and trim. Continue routing forward along the passenger side until reaching the center console area.

Access head unit and connect camera
Remove the center console lower trim panel and climate control panel using trim tools. Disconnect the hazard switch connector if necessary. Remove the four bolts securing the head unit, then carefully pull the head unit forward to access the rear connectors. Locate the reverse camera input connector (typically a yellow RCA connector or dedicated camera harness connector). Connect the backup camera harness to the appropriate input. Some vehicles may require a harness adapter.

    Connect reverse trigger wire
Locate the reverse light circuit to provide a trigger signal to the camera system. The easiest access point is typically at the transmission range sensor connector or at the reverse light bulb socket in the trunk. Connect the camera's reverse trigger wire (usually green or purple) to the reverse light positive wire. Verify connection polarity with a multimeter if necessary. Secure connection with appropriate connector or solder and heat shrink.
  8. 8
    Secure all wiring and grounds
Ensure all wiring is properly secured and routed away from moving parts, sharp edges, and heat sources. Use zip ties to secure wiring to existing harness bundles. If the camera system includes a separate ground wire, connect it to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the chassis using an appropriate bolt. Clean the contact area thoroughly before installation.

    Test camera operation
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to specification. Do not overtighten the terminal bolt. Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. Shift the transmission to REVERSE and verify that the backup camera image appears on the head unit screen. Check that the image is clear, properly oriented, and that guideline overlays appear if equipped. Verify the camera activates only when in reverse gear.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall all interior trim panels in reverse order of removal, ensuring all clips are properly seated
  2. Reinstall rear seat back and cushion, torquing mounting bolts to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  3. Reinstall trunk lid interior trim panel, pressing firmly on all clip locations until fully seated
  4. Verify all electrical connectors for trunk lighting are reconnected
  5. Ensure no wiring is pinched between panels or in moving components

Verification

  • Start the vehicle and shift into reverse multiple times to confirm camera activates consistently
  • Verify camera image is clear, properly framed, and shows adequate field of view behind vehicle
  • Check that dynamic guideline overlays move appropriately with steering wheel input if equipped
  • Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
  • Test trunk lid operation through full range of motion to ensure wiring does not bind or restrict movement
  • Inspect all trim panels to ensure they are secure with no rattles or gaps
  • Perform a low-speed reverse maneuver in a safe area to confirm camera functionality aids in backing up
