This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the positive battery cable on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8L I4 engine, including proper disconnection sequence and torque specifications.
Warnings
⚠️Always disconnect the negative battery terminal first and reconnect it last to prevent accidental short circuits.
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require window recalibration. Have the radio security code available if applicable.
⚠Never allow the positive cable to contact any ground point while the negative cable is connected.
ℹ️The positive cable connects to the battery, starter motor, and fuse box. Note routing before removal for proper reinstallation.

Parts
- Positive battery cable × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Ensure the vehicle is parked on level ground with the engine off and cooled
- Turn the ignition to OFF and remove the key
- Locate the battery in the engine compartment on the driver's side
- Identify the positive cable routing from battery through fuse box to starter motor
- Have replacement cable ready and compare routing to original
Procedure
- 1Disconnect negative battery terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative (black) battery terminal bolt. Remove the terminal from the battery post and secure it away from the battery to prevent accidental contact.
- 2Disconnect positive battery terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the positive (red) battery terminal bolt. Carefully remove the terminal from the battery post. Do not allow the cable or terminal to contact any metal surfaces.
- 3Remove battery hold-down (if necessary)If the battery hold-down bracket interferes with cable removal, use a 10mm socket to remove the battery hold-down bolt and remove the bracket. This may provide better access to trace the cable routing.Torque specBattery Hold-Down Bolt11 Nm (8.1 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect cable from fuse boxLocate where the positive cable connects to the underhood fuse box on the driver's side. Remove the protective cover if present. Use a 10mm or 12mm socket to remove the bolt securing the positive cable terminal to the fuse box stud. Note the position of any additional wires on the same stud.
- 5Disconnect cable from starter motorTrace the positive cable down to the starter motor on the rear of the engine (transmission side). You may need to reach from underneath or remove plastic covers for access. Use a 12mm socket to remove the nut securing the positive cable to the starter motor solenoid terminal. Support the cable to prevent it from dropping.
- 6Remove cable from vehicleCarefully remove any clips or retainers securing the positive cable along its routing path. Note the exact routing, including any clips, ties, or guide points. Remove the old positive cable from the vehicle, paying attention to how it routes around other components.
- 7Clean connection pointsUse a wire brush or battery terminal cleaner to clean the battery post, fuse box stud, and starter motor terminal. Remove any corrosion or oxidation. Ensure all contact surfaces are bright and clean for proper electrical connection.
- 8Route new positive cableRoute the new positive battery cable following the exact path of the original cable. Ensure the cable does not contact hot engine components, sharp edges, or moving parts. The cable should route from battery to fuse box, then down to the starter motor with appropriate slack and no binding.
- 9Connect cable to starter motorAttach the positive cable terminal to the starter motor solenoid stud. Install the retaining nut and tighten securely with a 12mm socket. Ensure the terminal is seated fully against the solenoid and the connection is tight.
- 10Connect cable to fuse boxAttach the positive cable terminal to the fuse box stud, ensuring it is in the same position as the original. Reinstall any additional wires that share the same stud in their original positions. Install the retaining bolt and tighten securely with a 10mm or 12mm socket.
- 11Secure cable routingInstall all cable clips, retainers, and ties along the cable routing path. Ensure the cable is properly secured and will not contact moving parts, hot surfaces, or sharp edges. Verify adequate clearance throughout the cable path.
- 12Reinstall battery hold-down (if removed)If the battery hold-down bracket was removed, reinstall it now. Position the bracket over the battery and install the hold-down bolt. Tighten to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specBattery Hold-Down Bolt11 Nm (8.1 lb-ft)
- 13Connect positive battery terminalPlace the positive cable terminal onto the positive battery post. Ensure it is seated fully. Apply dielectric grease to the connection if desired. Install the terminal bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal or battery post.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft)
- 14Connect negative battery terminalPlace the negative cable terminal onto the negative battery post. Ensure it is seated fully. Install the terminal bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. The battery is now reconnected and the vehicle electrical system is active.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all cable connections are tight and properly torqued at the battery, fuse box, and starter motor
- Ensure the cable routing matches the original path with all clips and retainers installed
- Reinstall any protective covers or shields that were removed for access
- Apply battery terminal protector spray if desired to prevent future corrosion
Verification
- Turn the ignition to ON and verify all dashboard warning lights illuminate normally, then turn off as expected
- Start the engine to verify the starter motor receives power and the engine starts normally
- Test electrical accessories including headlights, radio, power windows, and climate control
- Inspect all connection points for proper seating, no looseness, and no signs of arcing or overheating
- Check that the positive cable does not contact any ground points or moving components
- Reset the clock and radio presets as needed
- Perform power window auto-up/down recalibration if necessary by rolling each window fully down, then fully up and holding the switch for 2 seconds
