This procedure covers the replacement of both positive and negative battery cables on the 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L I4 engine, including proper disconnection, routing, and torque specifications.

Warnings

⚠️Always disconnect negative terminal first and reconnect it last to prevent short circuits
Disconnecting battery will erase radio presets, clock, and stored ECU adaptive values. Some vehicles may require relearning procedures
Never allow positive cable to contact metal body or frame while battery is connected
ℹ️Take photos of cable routing before removal to ensure correct reinstallation path

Parts

  • Positive battery cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Negative battery cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Battery terminal felt washers (if deteriorated) × 2 — Optional replacement

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Locate battery in engine compartment on driver side
  5. Take photos of battery cable routing for reference during reinstallation
  6. Have radio security code available if applicable

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect negative battery cable
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative (black/ground) battery terminal clamp bolt. Remove the cable from the negative terminal and secure it away from the battery so it cannot accidentally contact the terminal.
  2. 2
    Disconnect positive battery cable
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the positive (red) battery terminal clamp bolt. Remove the cable from the positive terminal. Cover the terminal end with a non-conductive cloth or plastic bag to prevent accidental contact.
  3. 3
    Remove battery hold-down
Using a 10mm socket, remove the battery hold-down bracket bolt. Lift the hold-down clamp away and set aside. Carefully lift the battery straight up and out of the battery tray. Set battery on a stable surface away from work area.
  4. 4
    Remove positive cable connections
Follow the positive cable to the fuse box and starter connections. Using a 10mm or 12mm socket (depending on connection point), unbolt the positive cable terminals from all connection points. Note the routing path and any cable clips or retainers. Remove the positive cable from the vehicle.
  5. 5
    Remove negative cable ground connections
Follow the negative cable to its ground points on the chassis and engine block. Using a 12mm or 13mm socket, remove the ground connection bolts. The negative cable typically has multiple ground points - ensure all are disconnected. Remove any cable clips securing the cable to the body. Remove the negative cable from the vehicle.
  6. 6
    Clean all connection points
Using a wire brush and battery terminal cleaner, thoroughly clean all terminal clamps, connection points, and ground surfaces. Remove all corrosion from battery terminals, cable ends, and ground mounting surfaces. Clean the battery tray of any corrosion using baking soda solution if needed. Ensure all metal contact surfaces are bright and clean.
  7. 7
    Install new positive battery cable
Route the new positive cable following the same path as the original, referencing photos taken during removal. Secure cable with any original clips or retainers. Connect the cable terminals to the fuse box and starter connection points, finger-tightening bolts initially. Do not connect to battery terminal yet.
  8. 8
    Install new negative battery cable
Route the new negative cable following the original path. Connect the cable to all ground points on the chassis and engine block, finger-tightening bolts initially. Secure cable with original clips. Torque all ground connection bolts to specification.

    Ground Cable Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
    Ground Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reinstall battery
Clean battery terminals with wire brush if needed. Apply light coat of dielectric grease to terminals if desired. Place battery back into battery tray, ensuring it is properly seated. Install the hold-down bracket and torque the hold-down bolt to specification.
    Torque spec
    Battery Hold-Down Bolt11 Nm (8.1 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Connect positive battery cable
Connect the positive (red) cable to the positive battery terminal first. Ensure the terminal clamp is fully seated on the battery post. Torque the battery terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Connect negative battery cable
Connect the negative (black) cable to the negative battery terminal last. Ensure the terminal clamp is fully seated on the battery post. Torque the battery terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten. Expect a small spark when making final connection - this is normal.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts7 Nm (5.2 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all cable connections are tight and properly torqued
  2. Ensure cables are properly routed and secured with all clips
  3. Confirm no cable is stretched tight or rubbing against sharp edges
  4. Double-check that battery hold-down is secure

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (do not start) - verify dashboard lights illuminate normally
  • Start the engine - should crank and start normally without hesitation
  • Check for proper charging - voltage at battery should read 13.5-14.5V with engine running
  • Test all electrical accessories (lights, radio, windows, wipers) to confirm proper operation
  • Verify no warning lights remain on dashboard after initial startup sequence
  • Inspect all cable connections for any signs of looseness or arcing
  • Reset clock and radio presets as needed
