This procedure covers cleaning, inspecting, and replacing battery terminals on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8L I4 engine to restore proper electrical connections.

Warnings

⚠️Always disconnect negative terminal first to prevent short circuits and potential battery explosion
Battery acid is corrosive. Wear protective gloves and eyewear when handling battery terminals
Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may trigger security features. Have radio code available if applicable
ℹ️Do not overtighten battery terminal bolts as this can crack the battery posts

Parts

  • Battery terminal (negative) × 1 — Use OEM specification or quality aftermarket
  • Battery terminal (positive) × 1 — Use OEM specification or quality aftermarket

Preparation

  1. Ensure vehicle is parked on level ground with ignition off and key removed
  2. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  3. Locate battery in engine bay on driver's side
  4. Note any memory saver requirements for radio or vehicle settings
  5. Inspect battery for visible damage, cracks, or excessive corrosion

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect negative battery terminal
Using a 10mm wrench, loosen the negative (-) battery terminal bolt. Rock the terminal gently side to side while pulling upward to remove it from the battery post. If stuck, use a battery terminal puller to avoid damaging the post. Position the cable away from the battery post to prevent accidental contact.
  2. 2
    Disconnect positive battery terminal
Using a 10mm wrench, loosen the positive (+) battery terminal bolt. Remove the terminal from the battery post using the same rocking motion. Keep the positive cable separated from any metal surfaces and the negative terminal.
Do not allow positive terminal or cable to contact any metal surfaces or the negative terminal
  3. 3
    Inspect battery posts and terminals
Examine battery posts for cracks, damage, or excessive corrosion. Check terminals for cracks, broken clamps, or stripped threads. If terminals are severely corroded or damaged, replacement is required. Minor corrosion can be cleaned.
  4. 4
    Clean battery posts and terminals
Use a wire brush or battery terminal cleaner to remove all corrosion from battery posts and the inside of terminal clamps. For heavy corrosion, apply a baking soda and water solution (1 tablespoon per cup of water), scrub thoroughly, then rinse with clean water and dry completely. Ensure posts are bright and shiny.
  5. 5
Install new or cleaned positive terminal
Place the positive terminal onto the positive (+) battery post. Ensure the terminal is fully seated and contacts the post completely around its circumference. Hand-tighten the terminal bolt, then torque to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten.

Install new or cleaned negative terminal
Place the negative terminal onto the negative (-) battery post. Ensure the terminal is fully seated and contacts the post completely. Hand-tighten the terminal bolt, then torque to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten.

  7. 7
    Apply protective coating
Apply a thin layer of dielectric grease or anti-corrosion spray to the outside of both terminals and exposed post areas to prevent future corrosion. Do not apply between the terminal and post contact surfaces.

Reassembly

  1. Verify both terminals are tight and secure with no movement
  2. Ensure no tools or loose items remain in engine bay
  3. Close hood securely

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify dashboard lights illuminate properly
  • Start engine and confirm it cranks normally with no hesitation
  • Check that all electrical accessories function correctly (radio, windows, lights)
  • Inspect terminals after first drive for any signs of looseness or arcing
  • Reset clock and radio presets as needed
