Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
  2. Remove key from ignition
  3. Remove all contents from glove box
  4. Allow HVAC system to cool if recently operated

    Remove glove box
    Open the glove box fully. Locate the damper arm on the right side of the glove box and disconnect it by pressing the release tab. Squeeze the sides of the glove box inward to release the stops from the frame, then lower the glove box completely down and remove it from the dash opening.

    Locate blower motor resistor
    With the glove box removed, look up into the HVAC housing on the passenger side. The blower motor resistor is mounted to the side of the blower motor housing with a wire harness connector attached. It is a rectangular module with cooling fins visible.

    Disconnect electrical connector
    Locate the wire harness connector attached to the blower motor resistor. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight off the resistor. Do not pull on the wires themselves.

    Remove resistor mounting screws
    Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws securing the blower motor resistor to the HVAC housing. Keep these screws as they will be reused.

    Carefully pull the blower motor resistor straight out from the HVAC housing. The resistor has a rubber seal around it that may stick slightly. Inspect the seal and ensure it comes out with the resistor.

    Examine the opening in the HVAC housing for any debris or damage. Clean the mounting surface with a clean, dry cloth. Check that the seal on the new resistor is properly seated on the resistor body.

    Install new resistor
    Insert the new blower motor resistor into the HVAC housing opening, ensuring the seal is aligned properly. Push the resistor in until it is fully seated against the housing. The mounting screw holes should align with the housing.

    Install mounting screws
    Install the two mounting screws and tighten them using a torque wrench to the specified torque. Tighten screws in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the resistor.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Push the wire harness connector firmly onto the blower motor resistor until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely locked.

    Reinstall glove box
    Position the glove box into the dash opening and squeeze the sides inward. Lift the glove box up and push it into place until the stops engage with the frame. Reconnect the damper arm to the glove box by pressing it into place until it clicks.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure glove box opens and closes smoothly with damper functioning properly
  2. Verify all glove box stops are properly engaged
  3. Replace all items that were removed from glove box

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
  • Set HVAC system to different fan speed settings (1, 2, 3, 4) and verify blower motor operates at each speed
  • Verify smooth transitions between fan speeds without hesitation or cutting out
  • Listen for any unusual noises from the blower motor area
