This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the HVAC blower motor assembly located behind the glove box on the passenger side of a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L I4 engine.

Warnings

Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds before working near airbag components to prevent accidental deployment
ℹ️The blower motor is accessible from inside the cabin without removing the dashboard; no refrigerant system work is required
Debris from the old blower motor or cabin filter may fall when removing components; protect interior surfaces

Parts

  • Blower motor assembly × 1 — 87103-02500 or aftermarket equivalent
  • Blower motor resistor (if damaged) × 1 — 87138-52010 or aftermarket equivalent

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and turn ignition off
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds
  3. Set climate control to OFF position
  4. Empty contents from glove box and surrounding area
  5. Place protective covering on passenger seat and floor to catch any debris

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove glove box assembly
Open the glove box fully. Locate the damper arm on the right side and squeeze it to disconnect from the glove box. Push inward on both sides of the glove box at the stopper locations to release the stops, then lower the glove box completely down past its normal range to access the blower motor area behind it.
  2. 2
    Disconnect blower motor electrical connector
Locate the blower motor electrical connector on the right side of the blower motor housing. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out to disconnect. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
  3. 3
    Remove blower motor resistor cover
Locate the blower motor resistor (climate control amplifier) on the side of the blower motor housing. Remove the Phillips screws securing the resistor cover. Carefully pull the cover away and set aside.

  4. 4
Disconnect and remove blower motor resistor
Disconnect the electrical connector from the blower motor resistor by pressing the locking tab. Remove the resistor mounting screws and withdraw the resistor from the housing. Inspect for burn marks or damage; replace if necessary.

  5. 5
    Remove blower motor mounting screws
Locate the three Phillips screws securing the blower motor assembly to the HVAC housing. These screws are positioned around the perimeter of the blower motor flange. Remove all three screws completely and retain for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Blower Motor Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Extract blower motor assembly
Carefully rotate the blower motor assembly clockwise approximately 15 degrees while pulling it straight down and out of the HVAC housing. The motor and fan cage assembly will come out as one unit. Be careful not to damage the fan blades during removal. Note the orientation of the motor for proper reinstallation.
  7. 7
Inspect and clean blower motor cavity
With the blower motor removed, inspect the HVAC housing cavity for debris, leaves, or obstructions. Use a vacuum and damp cloth to clean the cavity thoroughly. Check the foam seal on the blower motor housing opening for damage or deterioration.
ℹ️Excessive debris may indicate a torn or missing cabin air filter; inspect and replace the cabin filter if necessary
  8. 8
    Install new blower motor assembly
Position the new blower motor assembly with the electrical connector facing the correct direction (matching the removed motor orientation). Rotate the motor counter-clockwise approximately 15 degrees and insert it into the HVAC housing opening, ensuring the mounting flange seats properly against the housing. Align the three screw holes.
  9. 9
Secure blower motor with mounting screws
Install the three Phillips mounting screws through the blower motor flange into the HVAC housing. Thread all screws by hand first to ensure proper alignment. Using a torque wrench, tighten the screws to specification in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating.

  10. 10
    Reinstall blower motor resistor
Position the blower motor resistor (or reuse the existing one if undamaged) into its mounting location on the blower motor housing. Secure with the mounting screws and torque to specification. Reconnect the electrical connector to the resistor until the locking tab clicks.
    Torque spec
    Blower Motor Resistor Screws2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  11. 11
Install resistor cover and connect motor
Position the resistor cover over the resistor assembly and secure with Phillips screws, torquing to specification. Connect the main blower motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks fully into place and the locking tab engages.

  12. 12
    Reinstall glove box assembly
Lift the glove box back into position, pushing inward on both sides to allow the stoppers to pass through their openings. Once in place, reconnect the damper arm to the right side of the glove box. Close the glove box to verify proper operation.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
  2. Verify glove box operates smoothly and damper functions correctly
  3. Reconnect negative battery terminal
  4. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that may have been stored during battery disconnect

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
  • Test blower motor operation at all fan speed settings (1 through 4 or variable speeds)
  • Verify smooth operation with no unusual noises, vibrations, or squealing
  • Check that airflow is strong and consistent at each speed setting
  • Confirm proper airflow direction when switching between vent, floor, defrost, and mixed modes
  • Listen for any rattling that might indicate loose mounting or debris in the fan cage
  • Verify no error messages appear on the climate control display
