This procedure covers the removal and replacement of ignition coil packs on the 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8L I4 engine, including accessing coils beneath the engine cover.

Warnings

Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work to avoid burns from hot components
Do not disconnect battery on this vehicle unless necessary - may cause radio and ECU relearning issues
ℹ️Mark or photograph coil connector positions before removal to ensure correct reassembly

Tools required

10mm socket and ratchetEssential
Phillips head screwdriverEssential
Needle-nose pliers or coil boot puller
Torque wrench (10-30 Nm range)Essential
Dielectric grease
Anti-seize compoundEssential

Parts

  • Ignition coil pack × 4 — 90919-02260 or equivalent
  • Spark plugs (if replacing) × 4 — 90919-01253 or equivalent iridium

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Gather all tools and replacement parts within reach

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove engine cover
Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the four screws securing the plastic engine cover. The cover has rubber grommets underneath - pull upward firmly but gently to release them. Set cover aside.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Locate all four ignition coil electrical connectors. Press the release tab on each connector and pull straight up to disconnect. The connectors are color-coded or numbered - note their positions or take a photo for reference.
  3. 3
    Remove ignition coil mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing each ignition coil. Each coil has one bolt at the top. Keep bolts organized as they will be reused.
    Torque spec
    Ignition Coil Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Extract ignition coils
Grasp each coil firmly and pull straight up with steady pressure. The coil boot may stick to the spark plug - use a slight twisting motion while pulling if needed. If coils are stuck, use needle-nose pliers or a coil boot puller to avoid damaging the boot. Do not pry against the valve cover.
Do not use excessive force or pry tools that could damage valve cover or coil boots
  5. 5
    Inspect spark plug wells
Check inside each spark plug well for oil, coolant, or debris. If oil is present, valve cover gasket replacement may be needed. Clean any debris with compressed air or a clean lint-free cloth. Ensure spark plug wells are completely dry before proceeding.
  6. 6
    Replace spark plugs if needed
If replacing spark plugs during this service, use a 5/8 inch spark plug socket with extension. Remove old plugs by turning counterclockwise. Apply a small amount of anti-seize to the threads of new spark plugs (avoid getting any on the electrode). Thread new plugs by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then torque to specification.
Never drop a spark plug into the well - ceramic can crack and cause misfires
    Torque spec
    Spark Plugs - Aluminum Head20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Prepare new coil packs
Inspect new coil packs for any shipping damage. Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the inside of each coil boot where it contacts the spark plug. This prevents moisture intrusion and makes future removal easier.
  8. 8
    Install new ignition coils
Insert each coil straight down into its spark plug well, ensuring the boot seats fully onto the spark plug. You should feel a positive click or snap when properly seated. Align the mounting hole with the valve cover threaded insert.
  9. 9
    Secure coil mounting bolts
Install the 10mm mounting bolt for each coil and torque to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can crack the coil housing or strip the aluminum threads in the valve cover.
Overtightening can crack coil housing or strip valve cover threads - use torque wrench
    Torque spec
    Ignition Coil Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Push each electrical connector onto its corresponding coil until you hear and feel a distinct click. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is locked in place. Verify each connector matches your reference photo or notes.
  11. 11
    Reinstall engine cover
Align the rubber grommets on the underside of the engine cover with the posts on the engine. Press down firmly to seat all grommets. Install the four Phillips head screws and torque to specification.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Double-check that all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Ensure engine cover is properly secured with all screws tightened
  3. Clean any tools or parts from engine bay before starting vehicle

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify it runs smoothly without misfires or rough idle
  • Check that the check engine light does not illuminate after startup
  • Let engine idle for 2-3 minutes and listen for any unusual sounds
  • If check engine light appears, use OBD-II scanner to verify no misfire codes (P0300-P0304)
  • Perform a short test drive to confirm smooth acceleration and no hesitation under load
