This procedure covers removal and replacement of the engine cooling fan assembly on 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8L I4 models, including radiator fan motor and shroud.

Warnings

⚠️Never work on cooling system when engine is hot. Coolant temperature can exceed 200°F and cause severe burns.
Always disconnect negative battery cable before working on electrical components to prevent short circuits.
ℹ️This procedure requires partial coolant drain. Capture and reuse coolant if clean and within service life.

Parts

  • Cooling fan assembly × 1 — 16363-0H050 or aftermarket equivalent
  • Radiator drain plug O-ring × 1 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) — 2 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours)
  2. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable using 10mm wrench
  4. Remove engine under cover if equipped
  5. Place drain pan under radiator drain plug location

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain coolant from radiator
Locate radiator drain plug on driver side lower corner of radiator. Open drain plug and drain approximately 2 quarts of coolant into drain pan until coolant level is below upper radiator hose connection. Close drain plug with new O-ring and tighten to specification.
    Torque spec
    Coolant Drain Plug15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Disconnect upper radiator hose
Locate upper radiator hose at radiator connection on driver side. Loosen hose clamp using flat blade screwdriver or pliers and slide clamp down hose away from radiator. Twist hose gently to break seal and pull off radiator neck. Position hose upward to minimize coolant spillage.
ℹ️Some coolant will spill when disconnecting hose. Keep drain pan positioned to catch spillage.
  3. 3
    Disconnect cooling fan electrical connector
Locate the cooling fan motor electrical connector on the fan shroud assembly. Press the locking tab and pull connector apart. Route wire harness clear of fan assembly.
  4. 4
Remove fan assembly upper mounting bolts
Locate two upper mounting bolts securing fan shroud to radiator core support. These are 10mm bolts positioned at top of shroud. Remove both bolts completely and retain for reinstallation.
  5. 5
Remove fan assembly lower mounting tabs
Identify two lower plastic mounting tabs at bottom of fan shroud that insert into radiator brackets. Carefully lift fan assembly upward approximately 1 inch to disengage lower tabs from radiator mounting brackets.
Do not force fan assembly. Lower tabs are plastic and can break if excessive force is applied. Lift straight up to disengage.
  6. 6
    Remove cooling fan assembly
With lower tabs disengaged, tilt top of fan assembly toward engine while lifting upward to clear upper radiator hose and condenser. Remove assembly from engine bay. Inspect fan blades for damage and fan motor bearings for play or noise.
  7. 7
    Install new cooling fan assembly
Position new fan assembly above radiator, tilting top toward engine. Guide assembly down while threading lower mounting tabs into radiator brackets. Ensure tabs fully seat in brackets and fan shroud sits flush against radiator mounting surface.
  8. 8
    Install upper mounting bolts
Install two upper 10mm mounting bolts through fan shroud into radiator core support. Hand thread bolts first to ensure proper alignment, then tighten to specification using torque wrench.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Route cooling fan electrical connector to fan motor connector on shroud. Push connectors together firmly until locking tab clicks into place. Verify connection is secure by gently pulling on connector.
  10. 10
    Reconnect upper radiator hose
Clean radiator hose neck with shop towel. Push upper radiator hose firmly onto radiator neck until hose bottoms against neck shoulder. Position hose clamp over connection point and tighten to specification.
    Torque spec
    Hose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Refill coolant and bleed system
Add Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) through radiator cap opening until level reaches neck. Install radiator cap. Fill coolant reservoir to FULL line. Reconnect negative battery cable. Start engine and allow to reach operating temperature with heater on maximum. Monitor coolant level and add as needed. Check for leaks around radiator drain plug and upper hose connection.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine under cover if removed
  2. Verify all hose clamps are properly tightened
  3. Double-check that cooling fan electrical connector is fully seated and locked
  4. Ensure no tools or parts are left in engine bay

Verification

  • Start engine and verify cooling fan activates when engine reaches operating temperature (typically 195-205°F)
  • Check for coolant leaks at radiator drain plug and upper hose connection
  • Listen for abnormal fan motor noise or vibration during operation
  • Verify coolant level in reservoir remains at FULL mark after test drive
  • Confirm A/C system activates cooling fan when A/C is turned on
