Fuel Filler Neck

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the fuel filler neck assembly on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L engine, including disconnection of hoses and proper sealing.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Ensure fuel tank is less than 1/4 full; drain or siphon if necessary following local regulations
3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 90 seconds
4. Allow vehicle to cool completely if recently driven
5. Gather all tools and replacement parts
6. Prepare work area with adequate ventilation and fire extinguisher nearby

Procedure

   Remove rear seat cushion and access panel
   Pull the rear seat cushion forward from the bottom clips to remove. Locate and remove the Phillips screws securing the fuel pump access cover on the left side of the trunk floor. Remove the access cover.
   Torque spec

   Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)

   Relieve fuel system pressure
   Locate the fuel pump connector under the access panel. Disconnect the electrical connector. Start the engine and allow it to run until it stalls from fuel starvation. Attempt to start the engine 2-3 more times to ensure pressure is fully relieved. Turn ignition to OFF position.
   ⚠️Engine will stall during this process. This is normal and ensures fuel pressure is relieved.

   Access fuel filler neck from trunk
   Open trunk and remove left-side trunk trim panel by releasing plastic clips. Remove the rear wheel well liner fasteners on the driver side using a 10mm socket and carefully pull back the liner to expose the fuel filler neck area.

   Remove fuel filler door and cap
   Open the fuel filler door. Remove the fuel cap and set aside. From inside the trunk area, locate the two screws securing the filler door hinge. Remove screws and detach the filler door assembly.

   Disconnect filler neck hoses
   Locate the vapor hose and breather hose connected to the fuel filler neck. Using hose clamp pliers or flat-blade screwdriver, loosen the hose clamps and slide them away from the connection points. Carefully twist and pull the hoses off the filler neck. Have shop towels ready to catch any fuel residue.
   ⚠Fuel and vapors will be present in hoses. Work slowly and have absorbent materials ready.

   Remove filler neck mounting bolts
   Locate the filler neck mounting bolts securing the neck to the vehicle body (typically 3-4 bolts). Using a 10mm or 12mm socket with extension, remove all mounting bolts. Support the filler neck while removing the last bolt.

   Remove filler neck assembly
   Carefully pull the filler neck assembly outward from the vehicle body opening. Angle and maneuver the neck as needed to clear the body panel and wheel well area. Remove the rubber grommet from the body panel if it does not come out with the filler neck.

   Inspect and clean mounting area
   Inspect the body panel opening for rust, damage, or debris. Clean the mounting surface with shop towels. Inspect the rubber grommet for cracks, tears, or deterioration and replace if necessary. Check hoses for cracks or damage.

   Install new filler neck grommet
   Install the new or reused rubber grommet into the body panel opening, ensuring it is properly seated around the entire circumference. Apply a small amount of soapy water if needed to ease installation.

    Install new filler neck assembly
    Guide the new filler neck through the grommet and body opening, angling as needed to clear obstacles. Ensure the filler neck is fully seated against the body panel and aligns with all mounting bolt holes.

    Install and torque filler neck bolts
    Install all filler neck mounting bolts hand-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Using a torque wrench, tighten the bolts to specification in a cross-pattern sequence.

    Reconnect hoses and secure clamps
    Reconnect the vapor hose and breather hose to their respective ports on the filler neck. Ensure hoses are pushed fully onto the neck until they seat. Position hose clamps over the connection points and tighten to specification using a torque wrench or securely with a screwdriver.

    Reinstall filler door and trim
    Reinstall the fuel filler door by securing the hinge screws. Reinstall the wheel well liner and secure all fasteners. Reinstall the trunk trim panel by pressing clips into place.

    Reconnect fuel pump and battery
    Reconnect the fuel pump electrical connector under the rear seat access panel. Reinstall the access cover and torque screws to specification. Reinstall the rear seat cushion. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all hose connections are secure and clamps are properly tightened
2. Verify all trim panels and fasteners are reinstalled
3. Double-check that fuel pump connector is fully seated
4. Confirm fuel cap is available and not damaged

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (do not start) and listen for fuel pump priming for 2-3 seconds. Repeat 3-4 times to pressurize the system
• Inspect all filler neck connections for fuel leaks while system is pressurized
• Start the engine and verify it runs normally without hesitation
• Open fuel door and verify proper alignment and operation
• Add small amount of fuel and check for leaks around filler neck and hose connections
• Test fuel cap seal by installing and removing it several times
• Verify no fuel odor is present in trunk or cabin area
• Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that may have set during fuel pressure relief
