This procedure covers on-vehicle cleaning of fuel injectors using a professional fuel injector cleaning kit on the 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8L I4 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Fuel system is under high pressure. Relieve fuel pressure completely before disconnecting any fuel lines.
⚠️Work in a well-ventilated area away from open flames, sparks, or heat sources. Fuel vapors are extremely flammable.
Allow engine to cool completely before starting this procedure.
ℹ️This procedure cleans injectors on-vehicle without removal. For severely clogged injectors, removal and bench cleaning may be necessary.

Parts

  • Fuel line O-rings × 2 — 90301-10011 or equivalent
  • Fuel injector cleaning solution × 1 — Use OEM specification or professional grade

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Have fire extinguisher readily accessible
  5. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental fuel pump activation

Procedure

  1. 1
    Relieve fuel system pressure
Remove the fuel pump relay from the engine compartment fuse box (EFI MAIN relay). Reconnect battery temporarily, start the engine and let it run until it stalls from fuel starvation. Attempt to start the engine 2-3 more times to ensure all residual pressure is relieved. Disconnect battery negative cable again.
⚠️Fuel system operates at approximately 60 psi. Failure to relieve pressure can result in fuel spray and fire hazard.
  2. 2
    Remove engine cover
Remove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward on the cover to disengage the mounting grommets. Set aside in a clean area.
  3. 3
Access fuel rail and identify connection point
Locate the fuel rail assembly running across the top of the engine. Identify the fuel feed line connection on the driver's side of the fuel rail. This is where the cleaning kit will be attached.
  4. 4
    Disconnect fuel feed line
Using the appropriate fuel line disconnect tool, press the release tabs on the quick-connect fitting and carefully pull the fuel line straight off the fuel rail. Have shop towels ready to catch residual fuel. Cap the disconnected fuel line with a plug or plastic bag to prevent contamination.
Even with pressure relieved, expect some fuel spillage. Keep towels ready and contain any spilled fuel immediately.
  5. 5
Inspect and replace fuel line O-rings
Examine the O-rings on both the fuel rail connection port and the fuel line. Replace both O-rings with new units, lightly lubricating them with clean engine oil before installation. Discard old O-rings.
  6. 6
    Connect fuel injector cleaning kit
Attach the fuel injector cleaning kit adapter to the fuel rail inlet port where the fuel feed line was removed. Ensure the connection is secure and the adapter O-ring is properly seated. Connect the pressurized cleaning solution canister to the adapter according to the cleaning kit manufacturer's instructions.
  7. 7
    Disable fuel pump circuit
Ensure the fuel pump relay remains removed from the fuse box to prevent the fuel pump from operating during the cleaning process. Verify the fuel line remains capped or plugged.
  8. 8
    Perform cleaning procedure
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Open the valve on the cleaning solution canister. Start the engine and allow it to run on the cleaning solution. The engine may run roughly initially as deposits are dissolved. Continue running until the canister is empty or according to cleaning kit instructions (typically 15-20 minutes). The engine will stall when the cleaning solution is depleted.
Engine may produce excessive exhaust smoke during cleaning as carbon deposits are burned off. Ensure adequate ventilation.
  9. 9
    Remove cleaning equipment
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Close the canister valve and relieve any remaining pressure from the cleaning kit according to manufacturer instructions. Carefully disconnect the cleaning kit adapter from the fuel rail.
  10. 10
    Reconnect fuel feed line
Remove the cap or plug from the fuel feed line. Verify the new O-ring is properly positioned on the fuel rail port. Push the fuel line quick-connect fitting straight onto the fuel rail port until you hear and feel a positive click indicating proper engagement. Gently tug on the line to confirm it is locked in place.
Ensure quick-connect fitting is fully engaged. An improperly connected fuel line will leak under pressure.
  11. 11
Reinstall fuel pump relay and check for leaks
Reinstall the EFI MAIN fuel pump relay in the engine compartment fuse box. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition key to ON position (without starting) for 2 seconds, then OFF. Repeat this 3-4 times to allow the fuel pump to pressurize the system. Inspect all fuel connections for leaks, particularly at the fuel rail connection point.
⚠️Inspect thoroughly for fuel leaks before starting engine. Any leak must be corrected immediately.
  12. 12
    Reinstall engine cover
Position the plastic engine cover over the engine and press down firmly on all mounting points until the grommets snap into place securely.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all fuel connections are secure and properly engaged
  2. Verify engine cover is fully seated on all mounting points
  3. Confirm no tools or materials are left in engine compartment

Verification

  • Start the engine and allow it to idle for at least 2 minutes, listening for smooth operation
  • Check for any fuel odors or visible leaks around the fuel rail connection
  • Perform a test drive and verify improved throttle response and smoother idle characteristic of clean injectors
  • Monitor for check engine light; if illuminated, scan for fuel system codes
  • Re-inspect fuel connections after test drive for any seepage
