This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the cylinder head gasket on the 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8L 2ZR-FE engine, including disassembly of timing chain, camshafts, cylinder head, and related components.
Warnings
⚠️Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours) before beginning work. Hot coolant and components can cause severe burns.
⚠️Never rotate the engine with the timing chain removed or loosened. This will cause valve-to-piston contact and catastrophic engine damage.
⚠Cylinder head bolts are torque-to-yield and must be replaced if removed. Do not reuse old head bolts.
⚠Mark all timing chain and sprocket positions before disassembly. Incorrect timing will cause engine damage.
⚠Keep all camshaft caps in order and orientation. They are not interchangeable and must be reinstalled in original positions.
ℹ️This procedure requires engine support from above. Vehicle lift access is highly recommended.

Procedure
- 1Remove exhaust manifoldDisconnect oxygen sensors and unbolt exhaust manifold from cylinder head. Remove the heat shield first if equipped. Support the exhaust pipe to prevent damage to flex joint. Remove all exhaust manifold nuts in reverse pattern (outer to inner). Lift manifold away and remove old gasket material.
- 2Remove valve coverRemove ignition coils (4 bolts total). Unbolt valve cover bolts in reverse spiral pattern starting from outside. Carefully lift valve cover off - it may be sealed with RTV in addition to gasket. Clean any oil residue from mating surface on cylinder head.
- 3Remove intake manifoldDisconnect coolant hoses from throttle body area. Remove intake manifold support brackets. Remove all intake manifold bolts and separate manifold from cylinder head. Keep track of bolt lengths as they may vary. Remove and discard old gasket.
- 4Position engine to TDC cylinder #1Remove crankshaft pulley using holder tool to prevent rotation. Rotate crankshaft by hand (using crankshaft bolt) until timing marks on crankshaft and camshaft sprockets align with their respective marks. The No.1 cylinder should be at Top Dead Center on compression stroke. Mark the chain-to-sprocket relationship with paint pen on both intake and exhaust cam sprockets.⚠Verify timing marks are properly aligned before proceeding. Take photos for reassembly reference.
- 5Remove timing chain cover and secure timing chainRemove water pump pulley. Unbolt and remove timing chain cover (multiple bolts of various lengths - keep organized). Once cover is removed, verify timing marks again. Use zip ties or wire to secure timing chain to both camshaft sprockets to maintain position. Do not allow chain to fall into timing cover area.⚠️The timing chain must remain secured to the camshaft sprockets. If chain slips off or loses position, timing will be lost and must be reset.
- 6Remove camshaft sprockets and timing chainHold each camshaft with wrench on the hex section (between lobes). Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Carefully remove sprockets while keeping chain secured with wire through the sprocket holes to prevent chain from dropping. Remove VVT oil control valve and filter from front of cylinder head.
- 7Remove camshaftsLoosen camshaft bearing cap bolts gradually in multiple passes using reverse sequence (from outer caps toward center), loosening each bolt only 1/4 turn at a time to prevent warping. Remove all bearing caps and keep them in exact order with their bolts. Lift out intake camshaft, then exhaust camshaft. Inspect cam lobes and journals for wear or scoring.⚠Camshaft caps are directional and position-specific. Mark caps with cylinder number and orientation if not already marked from factory.
- 8Remove cylinder head bolts and headRemove cylinder head bolts in reverse sequence (spiral pattern from outer bolts toward center) in multiple passes. Head bolts must be discarded and replaced with new bolts. Once all bolts are removed, carefully lift cylinder head straight up off the block. It may require gentle prying at designated pry points - never pry between mating surfaces. Place head on clean wooden blocks with combustion chambers facing up.⚠Cylinder head is heavy (approximately 40 lbs). Use proper lifting technique or get assistance.
- 9Inspect and clean mating surfacesRemove old head gasket from engine block. Using plastic gasket scraper, carefully clean all gasket material from both cylinder head and engine block surfaces. Do not use metal scrapers that could gouge the aluminum surfaces. Inspect block surface with straightedge for warping - maximum allowable warpage is 0.05mm (0.002 inches). Clean cylinder head surface similarly and check for warpage. Inspect head for cracks, especially between valve seats. If head requires resurfacing, ensure total material removed does not exceed Toyota specifications.⚠Any scratches or gouges in the sealing surface can cause gasket failure. Work carefully and patiently.
- 10Install new head gasket and cylinder headEnsure block surface is completely clean and dry. Install new head gasket on block with 'TOP' or 'FRONT' marking facing up and toward front of engine. Verify dowel pins are in place in block. Carefully lower cylinder head onto block, aligning with dowel pins. Install NEW cylinder head bolts (never reuse old bolts) finger-tight initially.⚠Head gasket must be installed in correct orientation. Verify markings before lowering head into place.
- 11Torque cylinder head boltsFollowing the specific tightening sequence in Toyota service manual (typically spiral pattern from center outward), torque head bolts in three steps: Step 1 - Torque all bolts to 29 Nm (22 lb-ft) in sequence. Step 2 - Using angle gauge, rotate each bolt an additional 90 degrees in sequence. Step 3 - Rotate each bolt another 90 degrees in sequence (total 180 degrees from initial torque). Verify each bolt has been angle-tightened correctly.⚠Angle torque must be accurate. Mark each bolt head with paint pen before rotating to verify correct angle.Torque specCylinder Head Bolts29 Nm (22 lb-ft) + 180°
- 12Install camshaftsLubricate all camshaft journals and lobes with clean engine oil. Install exhaust camshaft first, then intake camshaft, ensuring timing pin holes face upward. Apply light oil to bearing cap contact surfaces. Install bearing caps in correct positions (match numbers and directional arrows to cylinder head markings). Install cap bolts finger-tight, then torque in sequence from center caps outward in multiple passes to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft). Verify camshafts rotate smoothly by hand.Torque specCamshaft Cap Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 13Install timing chain and camshaft sprocketsVerify crankshaft is still at TDC. Install timing chain onto camshaft sprockets, aligning colored links or marked links with timing marks on sprockets. Install sprockets onto camshafts, ensuring timing pin engages properly on intake cam sprocket. Verify all timing marks align correctly (crankshaft, intake cam, exhaust cam). Install and torque camshaft sprocket bolts while holding camshaft hex with wrench. Install new VVT oil control valve filter and reinstall valve.⚠️Triple-check all timing marks before proceeding. Incorrect timing will cause immediate engine damage upon startup.
- 14Install timing chain cover and rotate engineClean timing chain cover mating surface and install new gasket or apply RTV sealant per Toyota specifications. Install timing cover with all bolts, torquing in spiral pattern. Install water pump pulley. Install crankshaft pulley and torque to specification. Slowly rotate engine by hand two complete revolutions. Verify all timing marks realign at TDC. If marks do not align, timing chain installation must be repeated.⚠Engine should rotate smoothly. Any binding or resistance indicates a problem - do not force rotation.
- 15Reinstall intake and exhaust manifoldsInstall new intake manifold gasket and position manifold onto cylinder head. Install all bolts and torque in spiral pattern from center outward to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft). Reinstall manifold support brackets. Install new exhaust manifold gasket and position manifold onto cylinder head. Install all nuts and torque in spiral pattern from center outward to 32 Nm (24 lb-ft). Reconnect oxygen sensors.Torque specIntake Manifold Bolts23 Nm (17 lb-ft)Exhaust Manifold Nuts32 Nm (24 lb-ft)
- 16Install valve cover and complete assemblyInstall new valve cover gasket and new spark plug tube seal grommets into valve cover. Apply small amount of RTV sealant to corners where camshaft caps meet cylinder head (two spots at front). Position valve cover onto cylinder head and install bolts. Torque valve cover bolts in spiral pattern from center outward to 13 Nm (10 lb-ft). Install ignition coils with new seals. Reinstall all remaining components in reverse order of removal: throttle body, fuel line, vacuum hoses, electrical connectors, drive belt, air intake assembly, engine covers.Torque specValve Cover Bolts13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
