This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the headlight assembly on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L I4 engine, including proper disconnection of electrical connectors and torque specifications.
Warnings
⚠Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 90 seconds before starting work to prevent airbag deployment and electrical shorts
⚠Allow headlight bulbs to cool completely if vehicle was recently operated to prevent burns
ℹ️Halogen bulbs should not be touched with bare hands as skin oils can cause premature failure; use clean gloves or cloth
ℹ️Mark driver side vs passenger side if working on both to avoid confusion during reassembly

Parts
- Headlight assembly (driver or passenger side) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Push-type retainer clips (if damaged) × 3 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn off headlights and remove key from ignition
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 90 seconds
- Allow headlights to cool if vehicle was recently operated
Procedure
- 1Access headlight assemblyLocate the headlight assembly from the engine bay. Identify the upper mounting bolts (typically two) accessible from above the headlight housing. Note the position of any wiring harnesses or clips that may obstruct access.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the main headlight connector at the rear of the assembly. Press the release tab and pull the connector straight back to disconnect. If equipped with separate connectors for high beam, low beam, and turn signal, disconnect all three connectors. Note their positions for reinstallation.
- 3Remove upper mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the two upper headlight assembly mounting bolts. These bolts extend down into the headlight housing from above. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation.Torque specHeadlight Assembly Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 4Locate lower mounting pointThe lower mounting point is typically a bolt or pin accessed from underneath the bumper area or through the wheel well. Turn the steering wheel fully to the opposite side (for driver side headlight, turn wheel full right) to improve access. You may need to partially peel back the inner fender liner for better visibility.
- 5Remove lower mounting fastenerUsing a 10mm socket, remove the lower mounting bolt that secures the bottom of the headlight assembly. This bolt may have a captive nut on a bracket behind the bumper. Support the headlight assembly as you remove this final fastener.Torque specHeadlight Assembly Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 6Release headlight assemblyCarefully pull the headlight assembly forward and outward from the vehicle. The assembly may have alignment pins or tabs that fit into slots in the body. Gently wiggle the assembly while pulling to release these engagement points. Be careful not to scratch the paint on the fender or bumper during removal.
- 7Inspect mounting points and adjustment screwsWith the old assembly removed, inspect the mounting brackets and alignment pins on the vehicle for damage or corrosion. Clean the mounting surfaces if necessary. Note the position of the headlight adjustment screws (typically two: vertical and horizontal) on the old assembly if you need to transfer settings to the new unit.Torque specAdjuster Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 8Prepare new headlight assemblyRemove the new headlight assembly from packaging. Inspect for shipping damage. If the assembly does not come with bulbs pre-installed, transfer bulbs from the old assembly or install new bulbs using clean gloves or cloth to avoid touching the glass. Ensure all bulbs are properly seated and locked into position.
- 9Install new headlight assemblyAlign the headlight assembly with the mounting points on the vehicle. Ensure alignment pins or tabs engage properly with their corresponding slots in the body. Push the assembly firmly into position until it sits flush with the surrounding bodywork. The assembly should fit snugly without gaps.
- 10Install lower mounting fastenerInstall and hand-tighten the lower mounting bolt through the headlight assembly into the mounting bracket. Do not fully torque at this stage to allow for minor adjustments. Ensure the bolt threads engage smoothly without cross-threading.Torque specHeadlight Assembly Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 11Install upper mounting boltsInstall the two upper mounting bolts through the top of the headlight assembly. Hand-tighten both bolts, then torque all mounting bolts (upper and lower) to specification: 10.0 Nm (7.0 lb-ft). Torque in a cross pattern to ensure even seating.Torque specHeadlight Assembly Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect all electrical connectors to the rear of the headlight assembly. Ensure each connector clicks firmly into place and the locking tab engages. Match connectors to their corresponding bulb positions: low beam, high beam, and turn signal. Gently tug on each connector to verify secure connection.
- 13Reconnect battery and testReconnect the battery negative terminal. Turn on the vehicle and test all headlight functions: low beam, high beam, turn signal, and parking light. Verify both headlights illuminate with consistent brightness and color temperature. Check for any error messages on the instrument cluster.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify headlight assembly sits flush with surrounding bodywork with no gaps
- Confirm all mounting bolts are torqued to specification
- If fender liner was disturbed, ensure it is properly reinstalled with all clips secure
Verification
- Test all headlight functions with engine running: low beam, high beam, turn signals, and parking lights
- Inspect headlight alignment by parking 25 feet from a wall or garage door; beam pattern should be level and aimed properly (professional alignment recommended if significantly off)
- Check for moisture or condensation inside the headlight lens indicating improper seal
- Verify no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster related to lighting system
- Perform a visual inspection to ensure consistent appearance with opposite side headlight
