Replace a single headlight bulb on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L engine by accessing the bulb from the engine bay.

Warnings

Allow headlights to cool for at least 10 minutes before beginning work to avoid burns.
Never touch the glass portion of a halogen bulb with bare skin as oils will cause premature failure and hot spots.
ℹ️This procedure covers low beam bulbs (H11). High beam bulbs use a similar but slightly different access procedure.

Tools required

Clean lint-free gloves or clothEssential
Flashlight or work light

Parts

  • H11 halogen headlight bulb or LED equivalent × 1 — H11 bulb - verify low beam vs high beam requirement

Preparation

  1. Turn off the engine and all lights
  2. Allow headlight assembly to cool if vehicle was recently operated
  3. Open and secure the hood
  4. Identify which bulb needs replacement (driver or passenger side)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate the bulb access cover
From the engine bay, locate the circular rubber dust cover on the back of the headlight assembly. The low beam position is typically the outer bulb position on each headlight housing.
  2. 2
    Remove the dust cover
Grip the rubber dust cover firmly and rotate it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn, then pull it straight back to remove. Set aside in a clean location to prevent contamination.
  3. 3
    Disconnect the electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector attached to the bulb base. Press the release tab and pull the connector straight back away from the bulb. Do not pull on the wiring harness itself.
  4. 4
    Remove the bulb retaining clip
Identify the wire retaining clip that secures the bulb. Press down and slightly inward on the clip wire, then swing it out of the way to release the bulb. The clip will remain attached to the housing.
  5. 5
    Extract the old bulb
Carefully pull the bulb straight out from the headlight housing. Avoid twisting or forcing the bulb. Inspect the bulb socket for any corrosion, melting, or damage.
  6. 6
    Prepare the new bulb
Remove the new bulb from its packaging using clean gloves or a lint-free cloth. Handle only the plastic base, never touching the glass envelope. If the glass is accidentally touched, clean it with rubbing alcohol and allow to dry completely.
  7. 7
    Install the new bulb
Insert the new bulb into the headlight housing, ensuring the tabs on the bulb base align with the slots in the housing. Push firmly until the bulb is fully seated against the housing.
  8. 8
    Secure the retaining clip
Swing the wire retaining clip back over the bulb base and press it into the locked position. Ensure the clip is fully engaged and holding the bulb securely in place.
  9. 9
    Reconnect the electrical connector
Push the electrical connector onto the bulb base until it clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  10. 10
    Reinstall the dust cover
Align the tabs on the rubber dust cover with the slots on the headlight housing. Press the cover into place and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn to lock it in position. Ensure the cover is fully seated to prevent moisture intrusion.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure the dust cover is properly sealed to prevent moisture and debris from entering the headlight assembly
  2. Verify all electrical connections are secure and no wiring is pinched or damaged

Verification

  • Turn on the headlights and verify the new bulb illuminates properly
  • Check both low beam and high beam functions if applicable to confirm correct bulb installation
  • Inspect for any moisture or condensation inside the headlight lens which would indicate improper dust cover installation
  • Verify headlight aim has not been disturbed; adjust if necessary
