This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the heater control valve on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8L I4 engine, which regulates coolant flow to the heater core.
Warnings
⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
⚠Never open cooling system when engine is hot. System is pressurized and can spray hot coolant.
ℹ️The heater control valve is located on the firewall, passenger side. Access is limited and requires working from above and below.

Parts
- Heater control valve × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Coolant hose clamps × 2 — 9mm or 11mm spring type
Fluids
- Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) — 1.5 qt
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold to the touch
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on the four corner clips
- Place drain pan under radiator drain plug
- Open radiator cap slowly to release any residual pressure
- Drain approximately 2 quarts of coolant from radiator drain valve into pan
Procedure
- 1Access the heater control valveLocate the heater control valve on the firewall, passenger side near the strut tower. Remove any air intake ducting or plastic covers that obstruct access. The valve is positioned vertically with two coolant hoses attached.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector attached to the heater control valve and pull straight off. Move the connector aside to prevent coolant contamination.
- 3Remove inlet coolant hoseUsing hose clamp pliers, compress the spring clamp on the upper (inlet) coolant hose and slide it back along the hose. Twist the hose gently while pulling to remove it from the valve. Be prepared for coolant spillage. Plug the hose opening with a clean rag if needed.
- 4Remove outlet coolant hoseRepeat the same process for the lower (outlet) coolant hose. Compress the spring clamp, slide it back, and remove the hose from the valve. Allow residual coolant to drain into the pan positioned below.
- 5Remove valve mounting hardwareRemove the mounting bolt(s) securing the heater control valve to the firewall bracket using an 8mm socket. The valve is typically secured with one or two bolts depending on the specific bracket configuration.Torque specValve Mounting8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Remove heater control valveCarefully pull the valve away from the mounting bracket and remove it from the engine bay. Inspect the old valve for signs of leakage, corrosion, or damage. Check mounting bracket for damage or corrosion.
- 7Prepare new valveInspect the new heater control valve to ensure it matches the old unit exactly. Verify that the electrical connector is the same type and that hose barb sizes match. Ensure mounting holes align properly.
- 8Install new heater control valvePosition the new valve into the mounting bracket on the firewall. Insert and hand-tighten the mounting bolt(s). Torque to specification using an 8mm socket and torque wrench.Torque specValve Mounting8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect coolant hosesInstall the outlet (lower) hose first, pushing it firmly onto the valve barb until it seats completely. Position the spring clamp over the connection point and release it to secure. Repeat for the inlet (upper) hose. Ensure both hose clamps are positioned properly over the hose barbs.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the heater control valve until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked in place.
- 11Refill cooling systemClose the radiator drain valve. Using a funnel, add Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) to the radiator until it reaches the fill neck. Also check and fill the coolant reservoir to the FULL cold mark. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to operating temperature with the radiator cap off.
- 12Bleed cooling systemWith the engine at operating temperature and heater on maximum, slowly add coolant as the level drops during bleeding. Squeeze the upper radiator hose several times to help purge air bubbles. Continue until no more air bubbles emerge and the coolant level stabilizes. Install radiator cap securely.
Reassembly
- Reinstall any air intake ducting or plastic covers removed for access
- Reinstall engine cover by aligning clips and pressing down until they snap into place
- Wipe down any coolant spills in the engine bay with shop towels
- Top off coolant reservoir to FULL cold mark if needed after cooling
Verification
- Start the engine and verify no coolant leaks from the heater control valve connections
- Turn heater to maximum temperature and fan on high. Verify hot air is produced within 2-3 minutes
- Turn heater to minimum temperature. Verify air becomes cool, indicating the valve is closing properly
- Check for proper coolant level in reservoir after engine cools completely
- Monitor coolant level over the next few days and top off if needed as air continues to purge from system
- Scan for any HVAC-related diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner
