Remove and replace the heater core assembly on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla, requiring dashboard disassembly and coolant system draining.
Warnings
⚠️Engine and coolant system must be completely cold before starting work. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
⚠Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds minimum before working near airbag components.
⚠Take photos or label all connector locations during dashboard removal to ensure correct reassembly.
ℹ️This procedure requires significant interior disassembly. Work in a clean environment to prevent dirt from entering HVAC system.

Parts
- Heater core assembly × 1 — 87107-02470 or equivalent
- Heater inlet and outlet O-rings × 2 — Use OEM specification
- Heater hose clamps × 4 — Use OEM specification
- Dashboard clip assortment × 1 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) — 7.5 qt
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold (minimum 2 hours after operation)
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds
- Position drain pan under radiator drain plug
- Remove engine under cover if equipped
- Place protective covering over front seats and carpet
- Set steering wheel to straight-ahead position and lock if possible
Procedure
- 1Drain cooling systemOpen radiator drain plug and drain coolant into appropriate container. Remove radiator cap to speed draining. Once drained, locate heater hoses at firewall (engine side) and loosen hose clamps. Disconnect both heater inlet and outlet hoses from heater core pipes at firewall. Catch any residual coolant.
- 2Remove lower dashboard panels and trimRemove lower instrument panel finish panels on both driver and passenger sides. Remove knee airbag panel on driver side by removing screws and releasing clips. Remove glove box by squeezing sides to release stoppers, then disconnecting damper and removing mounting screws. Remove center lower finish panel below climate controls.Torque specDashboard Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect steering column and remove driver componentsRemove steering column upper and lower covers by removing screws. Disconnect electrical connectors from combination switch and column-mounted controls. Remove steering column mounting bolts (note shim positions) and lower column carefully. This provides access to upper dashboard mounting.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 4Remove instrument cluster and center componentsRemove instrument cluster bezel trim by releasing clips. Remove instrument cluster mounting screws, pull cluster forward, and disconnect electrical connectors. Remove center console side panels and shifter trim. Remove radio/navigation unit mounting screws, disconnect antenna and electrical connectors, and remove unit.Torque specDashboard Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 5Disconnect main dashboard electrical connectionsWorking from both driver and passenger sides, locate and disconnect all main harness connectors from dashboard. This includes HVAC controls, airbag harness, lighting controls, and accessory power connectors. Label each connector location with tape or take detailed photos.
- 6Remove dashboard mounting boltsLocate and remove all dashboard mounting bolts. Typical locations include: ends at A-pillars (2 each side), under instrument cluster area (2-3 bolts), center above glove box area (2 bolts), and floor mounting points (2-4 bolts). Verify all fasteners are removed before attempting to lift dashboard.⚠Dashboard assembly is heavy and awkward. Have an assistant help lift and support dashboard during removal.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 7Remove dashboard assemblyWith all fasteners and connectors removed, carefully lift and pull dashboard assembly rearward to disengage from firewall. Lift assembly up and out of vehicle with assistance. Place on protected surface. Inspect for any remaining attached wiring or fasteners if resistance is felt.
- 8Access and remove HVAC housing coversWith dashboard removed, HVAC housing is now visible against firewall. Remove instrument panel brace if equipped. Remove HVAC housing covers by removing cover screws. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors to blower motor or actuators on housing.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 9Remove evaporator housing and blower assemblyRemove blower motor mounting screws and extract blower assembly. Remove housing bolts securing evaporator case halves. Carefully separate housing to access heater core. Note orientation of all foam seals and air doors for reassembly.⚠Housing Bolts are CRITICAL torque specification. Over-tightening can crack plastic housing.Torque specHousing Bolts13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 10Remove old heater coreLocate heater core mounting bracket and remove heater core mounting fasteners. Carefully slide heater core from housing, noting pipe routing and seal positions. Remove and discard old O-rings from heater core pipes. Inspect housing for debris, leaves, or damage.Torque specHeater Core Mounting8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 11Install new heater coreInstall new O-rings on heater core inlet and outlet pipes, lubricating with small amount of coolant. Carefully slide new heater core into housing, ensuring pipes route correctly through firewall opening and seals seat properly. Install heater core mounting fasteners to specification.ℹ️Ensure foam seals around heater core are properly positioned to prevent air bypass and coolant leaks.Torque specHeater Core Mounting8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 12Reassemble HVAC housingRejoin evaporator housing halves, ensuring all air door linkages are properly engaged and foam seals are correctly positioned. Install housing bolts to critical torque specification. Reinstall blower motor assembly. Reinstall HVAC housing covers with cover screws to specification.Torque specHousing Bolts13 Nm (10 lb-ft)Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 13Reinstall dashboard assemblyWith assistance, position dashboard assembly into vehicle, engaging locating pins at firewall. Install all dashboard mounting bolts finger-tight first, then torque to specification starting from center and working outward. Reconnect all electrical connectors using photos/labels as reference.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 14Reinstall steering column and interior componentsRaise steering column into position, install shims in original locations, and install column mounting bolts to specification. Reconnect all steering column electrical connectors. Reinstall instrument cluster, radio unit, center console components, and all trim panels. Install all dashboard screws to specification.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)Dashboard Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 15Connect heater hoses and refill coolantFrom engine compartment, connect heater inlet and outlet hoses to heater core pipes at firewall. Install new hose clamps and tighten heater hose clamps to specification. Refill cooling system with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) to proper level. Reconnect battery negative terminal.Torque specHeater Hose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Double-check all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify all dashboard panels and trim pieces are properly clipped and secured
- Ensure glove box opens and closes smoothly without binding
- Check that all HVAC controls operate through full range of motion
- Verify steering column adjustment and tilt functions work properly
Verification
- Start engine and monitor coolant level as system fills and air purges. Add coolant as needed
- Set HVAC to maximum heat and high fan speed. Verify hot air flows from all vents within 5-10 minutes
- Check for coolant leaks at heater hoses and firewall connections while engine is at operating temperature
- Verify both heater hoses are hot to touch when heater is on, indicating proper coolant flow
- Test all HVAC modes (defrost, floor, vent) and temperature settings for proper operation
- Check for coolant smell inside cabin which would indicate leaking heater core
- Verify no dashboard rattles or squeaks during test drive
- Monitor coolant level over next few days and top off as air continues to purge from system
