This procedure covers removal and replacement of the intake manifold gasket on the 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8L I4 engine, including disassembly of related components and proper reassembly with torque specifications.

Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work to avoid burns from hot coolant and components. Engine must be cold to touch.
Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting fuel lines to prevent fuel spray and fire hazard.
Coolant is toxic to pets and children. Collect and dispose of properly; do not allow to drain onto ground or into storm drains.
ℹ️Take photos of vacuum hose routing and electrical connector positions before removal to aid reassembly.

  • Coolant (replacement quantity) × 1 — Toyota Super Long Life Coolant Pink

Fluids

  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) — 2 qt

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cold to the touch
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds for airbag system to discharge
  3. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on cover (friction clips)
  4. Relieve fuel system pressure by removing fuel pump relay and cranking engine until it stalls
  5. Position drain pan under engine and drain coolant from radiator petcock and engine block drain if accessible

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove air intake system
Disconnect the mass airflow sensor electrical connector. Loosen the clamp at the throttle body and remove the air intake tube. Remove the air filter housing assembly by disconnecting any vacuum lines and removing mounting bolts. Set aside in a clean area.
  2. 2
    Disconnect throttle body connections
Disconnect the throttle body electrical connector. Remove the accelerator control cable bracket if equipped with manual throttle cable (most are electronic). Disconnect coolant bypass hoses from the throttle body using pliers to release hose clamps. Be prepared for residual coolant spillage.
Residual coolant in throttle body hoses will drain when disconnected. Position drain pan accordingly.
  3. 3
    Remove throttle body
Remove the four throttle body mounting bolts and carefully separate the throttle body from the intake manifold. Inspect the throttle body gasket and discard. Cover the intake manifold opening with a clean shop towel to prevent debris entry.
    Torque spec
    Throttle Body Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Disconnect fuel rail and injectors
Disconnect the fuel supply line from the fuel rail using appropriate disconnect tool or by pressing release tabs. Disconnect all four fuel injector electrical connectors. Remove the two fuel rail mounting bolts. Carefully pull the fuel rail with injectors straight up and out of the intake manifold. Cap or plug fuel line opening.
Keep fuel rail assembly clean and place on clean shop towels. Do not allow dirt to enter injector ports or fuel passages.
    Torque spec
    Fuel Rail Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  5. 5
Disconnect vacuum lines and electrical connectors
Disconnect the brake booster vacuum line from the intake manifold. Disconnect the PCV hose from the valve cover and intake manifold. Label and disconnect any remaining vacuum lines, EVAP lines, and electrical connectors attached to the intake manifold including MAP sensor if equipped. Remove the engine wiring harness bracket if it interferes with manifold removal.
  6. 6
    Remove EGR valve if equipped
If your vehicle is equipped with an EGR valve (varies by model year and emissions package), disconnect the EGR electrical connector and coolant lines. Remove the EGR valve mounting bolts and remove the valve assembly. Plug any coolant passages to prevent spillage.
  7. 7
    Remove intake manifold support bracket
Locate and remove the intake manifold support bracket bolts on the underside of the manifold where it connects to the engine block. This bracket provides structural support and must be removed before the manifold can be lifted away.
  8. 8
    Remove intake manifold
Remove all intake manifold mounting bolts in reverse order from center outward (reverse of installation sequence). There are typically 6-8 bolts securing the manifold. Carefully lift the intake manifold away from the cylinder head. The manifold may require gentle wiggling to break the gasket seal. Do not pry against sealing surfaces.
Do not pry between manifold and cylinder head mating surfaces as this will cause warping and leaks.
    Torque spec
    Intake Manifold Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
  9. 9
Remove old gasket and clean surfaces
Remove and discard the old intake manifold gasket. Use a plastic gasket scraper to carefully remove all old gasket material from both the intake manifold and cylinder head mating surfaces. Clean surfaces thoroughly with brake cleaner and lint-free shop towels. Inspect surfaces for warping or damage. Cover intake ports on cylinder head with clean towels to prevent debris entry.
Use only plastic scrapers on aluminum surfaces to prevent gouging. Any debris that falls into intake ports or cylinders can cause serious engine damage.
  10. 10
Install new gasket and position manifold
Ensure both mating surfaces are completely clean and dry. Position the new intake manifold gasket on the cylinder head, aligning all port openings and bolt holes. Carefully lower the intake manifold onto the gasket, ensuring proper alignment. Do not use any gasket sealant unless specified by manufacturer for this application.
  11. 11
Install and torque intake manifold bolts
Hand-thread all intake manifold bolts to prevent cross-threading. Tighten bolts in sequence from center outward in a cross pattern to ensure even clamping pressure. Torque all bolts to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) in the same sequence. Perform final torque check in sequence.
ℹ️Proper bolt tightening sequence is critical to prevent gasket leaks and ensure even clamping force across the manifold.
    Torque spec
    Intake Manifold Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reinstall support bracket and accessories
Reinstall the intake manifold support bracket and torque mounting bolts to specification. If EGR valve was removed, install with new gasket if applicable and torque bolts. Reconnect all coolant lines to EGR valve.
  13. 13
    Reinstall fuel rail assembly
Ensure injector O-rings are in good condition and lightly lubricate with clean engine oil. Carefully align all four injectors with their ports in the intake manifold and press fuel rail assembly straight down until fully seated. Install fuel rail bolts and torque to specification. Reconnect all fuel injector electrical connectors and fuel supply line.
    Torque spec
    Fuel Rail Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  14. 14
    Reinstall throttle body
Install new throttle body gasket on intake manifold. Position throttle body and install mounting bolts. Torque bolts to specification in a cross pattern. Reconnect coolant bypass hoses and secure with clamps. Reconnect throttle body electrical connector.
    Torque spec
    Throttle Body Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  15. 15
Reconnect remaining components and refill coolant
Reconnect all vacuum lines, PCV hose, brake booster line, and any electrical connectors using reference photos taken during disassembly. Reinstall air intake system and connect MAF sensor. Refill cooling system with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant to proper level. Reconnect negative battery terminal. Install engine cover.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Ensure all vacuum lines are properly routed and secured with no kinks
  3. Double-check that all bolts have been torqued to specification
  4. Verify fuel line connection is secure and properly locked

Verification

  • With engine cold, turn ignition to ON position (do not start) and check for fuel leaks around fuel rail and supply line
  • Start engine and allow to reach operating temperature while monitoring for leaks around intake manifold gasket
  • Check for vacuum leaks by listening for hissing sounds around manifold perimeter and vacuum connections
  • Verify smooth idle with no roughness or misfires (use scan tool to check for fault codes if available)
  • Check coolant level after engine reaches operating temperature and top off if necessary
  • Test drive vehicle to verify normal acceleration and no hesitation under load
