This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the neutral safety switch (also called the park/neutral position switch) on the automatic transmission of a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8L I4 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Always use jack stands when working under the vehicle. Never rely on a jack alone.
Transmission fluid may be hot if the vehicle has been recently driven. Allow adequate cooling time.
Toyota WS ATF is specific to this transmission. Do not substitute with other fluids.
ℹ️The neutral safety switch prevents the engine from starting in any gear except Park or Neutral. Verify proper operation after installation.

Parts

  • Neutral safety switch (park/neutral position switch) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Switch O-ring or gasket × 1 — Usually included with switch

Fluids

  • Toyota WS ATF — 2.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental starting
  4. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
  5. Remove engine under cover or splash shield if equipped
  6. Allow transmission to cool to safe working temperature if recently driven

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate the neutral safety switch
The neutral safety switch is mounted on the driver's side of the automatic transmission case, near the shift cable connection. Identify the electrical connector and mounting bolts before proceeding.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the switch electrical connector and carefully disconnect it from the neutral safety switch. Move the connector out of the work area to prevent damage.
  3. 3
    Position drain pan
Place a large drain pan directly under the neutral safety switch location. Expect approximately 1.5-2.5 quarts of transmission fluid to drain when the switch is removed.
Transmission fluid will drain immediately when the switch is removed. Ensure drain pan is properly positioned.
  4. 4
    Remove switch mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the two bolts securing the neutral safety switch to the transmission case. Keep bolts in a clean area for reinstallation.

    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove old switch
Carefully pull the neutral safety switch straight out from the transmission case. Fluid will drain from the opening. Allow fluid to drain completely into the pan. Remove and discard the old O-ring or gasket from the switch bore.
  6. 6
    Clean mounting surface
Use shop towels to clean the switch mounting surface on the transmission case. Remove any old gasket material, debris, or contaminants. Ensure the bore is clean and dry before installation.
  7. 7
    Prepare new switch
Install the new O-ring or gasket onto the new neutral safety switch. Lightly coat the O-ring with clean Toyota WS ATF to aid installation and ensure proper sealing. Verify the switch orientation matches the removed switch.
  8. 8
    Install new switch
Carefully insert the new neutral safety switch into the transmission case bore, ensuring proper alignment. Press firmly until the switch is fully seated against the transmission case.
  9. 9
    Install and torque mounting bolts
Install the two mounting bolts by hand, then tighten them evenly in a cross pattern using a torque wrench to 15.0 Nm (11.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this may damage the switch or transmission case.

    Mounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Reconnect the electrical connector to the neutral safety switch, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged.
  11. 11
    Refill transmission fluid
Locate the transmission fill plug on the driver's side of the transmission case. Remove the fill plug and add Toyota WS ATF through the fill hole until fluid begins to drip from the opening. The transmission should be at operating temperature (typically 40-45°C / 104-113°F) for proper fill level. Add approximately 2.5 quarts or match the amount drained.
ℹ️For accurate fill level, transmission fluid should be checked at operating temperature with engine running in Park position.
  12. 12
    Install fill plug
Once proper fluid level is achieved, clean the fill plug threads and reinstall it securely. Do not overtighten.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine under cover or splash shield if removed
  2. Lower vehicle from jack stands
  3. Reconnect negative battery cable
  4. Remove wheel chocks

Verification

  • Start the engine with the shifter in Park position - engine should start normally
  • Attempt to start the engine with the shifter in Neutral position - engine should start normally
  • Attempt to start the engine with the shifter in Drive position - engine should NOT start (starter should not engage)
  • Attempt to start the engine with the shifter in Reverse position - engine should NOT start (starter should not engage)
  • Check for any transmission fluid leaks around the neutral safety switch with engine running
  • Verify backup lights illuminate when shifter is placed in Reverse position
  • Take a short test drive and verify all gear selections function properly
  • Recheck transmission fluid level after vehicle reaches operating temperature
